One Nation, NOT Under God, Indivisible

I've wondered about it, but I'm not sure it's true.

Well said Deadnail, and remind me never ever to get in a debate with you. As for Danarchist, I can agree with his rules fairly well. But I'm afraid that evangelism's under freedom of speech. Then again, even I sometimes wish it weren't. Some people talk to you about religion, and you come away feeling like you've been hit on by your less preferable gender. Most people I know feel quite secure in their religion(into which I group atheism, since it's a view on God), but there are people out there who aren't secure - and that's who evangelists are looking for. They really don't have a way of determining who is in that group, so they ask everyone. Granted, they should take hints and get outta dodge faster, but they are invariably people of conviction. It's their character type. As for religion, I see it like the law sees most other actions: You're free to do it, as long as you hurt no one and don't put others at risk. Otherwise, you've overstepped your bounds. That's generally the rule of thumb, and I'll bet that the concept is laid out somewhere in the Constitution or some important document. I'm just too darned lazy to look it up.

Wow. Xian is apparently a staunch humanist. As such, I'll guess that the idea of sin or such transgression probably doesn't sit well with him. Yeah, that might change the way he sees religion. Xian, I think I remember you speaking of institutions or systems... Oh, here it is: Okay, this of things this way: If you look at the behaviors that a religion promotes(take Christianity, my familiarity), I think you will see the product of that system. Christianity textually promotes the lifestyle of the ideal citizen(fruits of spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindess, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control). Bigotry stands in contradiction to these values. And before you throw back at me that many Christians are bigots, remember that the squeaky wheel get the oil - you only remember the ones that made a serious(in this case, negative) impression. How many other people go to church that do not act that way? You'd have to poll a whole church to find that out! Remember that the church does not attempt to produce bigots, but there are bigots who will spring up and adopt any topic from race to religion to whether or not Coca-cola should be taken straight or over the rocks. I'm for ice, myself, but that's not binding on anyone else. I *think* I adressed what you were saying correctly.

Having read many of the posts in the thread(The whole thing? You kidding me?!) I gather that most people in the thread aren't churchgoers. That's just a generalization, but it seems most of you are at least distanced from religion by a bit. As a result, I think you guys might have a slightly stereotyped view of people of faith, such as myself. And thinking of some commonly seen religious themes(tele-vangelists, Muslim suicide bombers, etc...) I can see where you come from. So I'll compress all the things I want to say into this: 'Even if I'm wrong, even if another religion is correct and I go to Hell, and even if I die a virgin, I'll still believe that my religion made me a better person than I might have been otherwise. I'm not saying that I'm better than anyone else because I believe: I'm saying that I'm better than I might have been because of the values in the religion.'
