    Doom Streams

Hey just about to go online! Starting things simple, doing a 100% UV Playthrough of Knee Deep in the Dead using GZDoom. If you wish to join, here's the link: https://www.twitch.tv/mike_k91 EDIT: For those who missed the stream, here's a video link:

    Doom Streams

Hello! Haven't been on Doomworld in years, but recently I've started streaming on Twitch and was thinking of doing some challenge runs with classic Doom, starting with UDoom. First challenge run I was considering involves the elimination of certain types of items/ammo from the game in stages to see how difficult gameplay becomes because of this in otherwise easy episodes such as Knee Deep in the Dead. If the challenge is a successful one I may condense it into a YouTube video to show the findings of my experiment. If there's any interest, here's my Twitch channel. I'll announce if I'm going to go online. https://www.twitch.tv/mike_k91

Thy Flesh Consumed with different progression?

The MAPINFO patch had some interesting ideas. 'And Hell Followed' has a Cyberdemon in it and for that alone I'd put it a bit later than E4M2, even if from what I remember the Cybie isn't that hard to defeat. I've done a bit of a playthrough of my map order and I'd have to say that 'Hell Beneath' isn't THAT challenging when it is the third map in a set, it is still harder than the first two maps but it is nothing compared to what it is in the official IWAD. 'Sever The Wicked' also becomes slightly easier when in the fourth slot instead of the third, but it still has a sting to it. I still have to do a playthrough of the rest of the maps in the set I created to judge the whole thing though. I have to admit though, 'Hell Beneath' has a prettier design than 'Unruly Evil', especially in the start location. The little wooden box where UE starts isn't all that visually appealing for the opening of an episode, which ID Software would have taken into consideration (probably).
  4. Hi everyone, long time no see! I was thinking just now about how the fourth episode of UDoom has a rather strange progression, starting off hard until E4M4, when things become very easy before the difficulty builds up again for E4M6. It made me wonder if 'Unruly Evil' was originally intended as the first map of Thy Flesh Consumed before Id Software decided it best to throw some hard maps at the beginning to really showcase the bonus levels they created for the original Doom. I haven't had a playthrough of this new progression yet, but I've quickly drawn up a more linear sequence for TFC and I was wondering what everyone here would think of it. Does anyone else think TFC would have been better off following a more traditional difficulty curve, or is it fine how it is? E4M1 - Unruly Evil E4M2 - They Will Repent E4M3 - Hell Beneath E4M4 - Sever the Wicked E4M5 - And Hell Followed E4M6 - Against Thee Wickedly E4M7 - Perfect Hatred (entrance to E4M9) E4M8 - Unto The Cruel E4M9 - Fear

Nova III - old thread, don't use!

The new screenshots are looking really good. Each NOVA looks to be a step up in quality from the last. I should get around to setting up my let's play channel on YouTube so I can go through them all and share my thoughts with everyone.

NOVA III [LINK TO NEW THREAD IN OP]

No problems dude I don't think I've been here for about a year! :P Liking amok's screenshots, the big lava crosses make me nostalgic for when I was working on MAP27: Sensorium from the very first Nova a few years back.

NOVA III [LINK TO NEW THREAD IN OP]

I like it. Looks reminiscent of 'Sensorium' from the original NOVA (one of the maps I worked on).

NOVA III [LINK TO NEW THREAD IN OP]

NOVA III: Tenacious Trinity is a pretty cool name for this wad IMO, does everyone agree? I love how the screenshots look like this is going to be a step up from the other two NOVAs, it seems to get more professional each time as everyone tries to up the ante and make the coolest map.

NOVA III [LINK TO NEW THREAD IN OP]

Since I was the one who founded the original NOVA project back in 2011 can I make one little suggestion? Can NOVA III have a cool extended title like NOVA: The Birth and NOVA II: New Dawn? I was thinking NOVA III: Unholy Trinity but if someone has a better suggestion I'm fine with it.

This hasn't even been going for a week and virtually all the map slots have been claimed! Is NOVA becoming Doomworld's next Community Chest series or what? :P

NOVA II Makes a Big Bang

I'm surprised to hear my name as well, I essentially did nothing except keep track of submissions in the first few months of the project lol. That said, being the founder of the NOVA series and all, if anyone on TeamNOVA 2 wants to go ahead and create a third installment they are more than welcome to. I probably won't return as an alumni though as I've gone off Doom mapping for the time being and might do a standalone project instead if I get back in the mood. Would be interested to see progress on any future NOVAs though. P.S. - 'NOVA III: Unholy Trinity' would be a cool title for an upcoming megawad. :P
  12. No further commentary needed in the title; the wad has been officially released. Get it here: ftp://ftp.fu-berlin.de/pc/msdos/games/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/megawads/nova.zip * * * * * ORIGINAL BLURB Welcome to the project thread for NOVA: The Birth! Here we are working on creating a 32 map megawad consisting of efforts by those who are new to the Doom mapping experience (including myself). The restrictions are as follows: - All maps must be in limit removing format (-complevel 2 if that definition means anything to you) - All maps are to be made entirely from stock Doom II textures. Anything else, whether it be theme, size, difficulty is entirely up to you in terms of map creation. Any level that is produced competently and with the restrictions above in mind is eligible for inclusion within the project. If you wish to contribute maps to NOVA, feel free to introduce yourself and begin posting your in-progress/complete WADs, your screenshots, your queries and your comments in this thread. There is no need to sign up for this project, everyone is free to contribute as they wish without any permission needing to be granted by anyone first. If you wish to donate or suggest good MIDI or MUS files for this project, you are free to do so but keep in mind that we are unlikely to use all that are given to us as we have received a lot already. They are nonetheless appreciated though. If you wish to help us out, please download the WAD and give it a play. We would appreciate any feedback in terms of what we could improve on and what we've done right. Kind regards, kildeth, Team NOVA project leader.

NOVA: The Birth - v1.1 release now on idGames!

Lucky I randomly logged in and found this so I could update the header. Nice job everyone :)
  14. Heyy I'm new to Doom can I join the project? :D Just kidding, it's me. Glad to see this is still running and thank you to Dobu for once again taking up the job in my absence. I was probably a bit abrupt in my departure back in January but I felt it was better to step out quickly with notice when everything was running smoothly than wait for a crisis I may have been too busy to deal with and just cave in. Hopefully I didn't cause everyone too much stress at the time. I'm not planning on contributing any maps, but I wouldn't mind being a play tester for this project since I did launch this along with the first installment. If May 31st is the deadline I'm sure you would all want someone to play through your works in the coming weeks and I'd be happy to take a look and offer some critique. - kildeth (PS. Did Plums ever come back? Or did he/she just vanish?)
  15. NOTE: Sorry this blurb is so long! I'll cut it down however I can over the coming days, until then - bare with me! Hello everyone. It is I, kildeth, and I today bring to you another megawad project from the darkest depths of the raging Inferno. Behold, the discussion thread for NOVA II: New Dawn! Following on from our previous project (NOVA: The Birth), NOVA II will focus on collaboration between mappers both new and old, in hopes to give some up and coming Doomworld Map Superstars a spotlight for their creations that they might not otherwise get in a more intense project. Everyone is welcome to come along and contribute, but priority will be given to the new mappers to ensure they all get their own place within the project. We will be working with the Doom II IWAD in -complevel 2 (limit-removing) format (which would be Doom II in Doom format or something similar in your map editors) in order to make it easy for new mappers to learn all the ropes without too many technicalities. Our goal is to make a 32 map megawad from our works like in the first NOVA. There is no specific theme running through the wad that must be adhered to; each mapper is just there to do their best to give a quality product and we'll stick it all together however it fits in the end, so no limits on creativity. This thread will be used for posting our ideas, progress and any other queries that you may have. Feel free to upload screenshots or half-complete wads for playtesting and give feedback to others' work, it's how we learn here. Contribution Rules NOVA II will consist of three different types of mappers. New mappers - People who haven't mapped before or have contributed little to the Doom community in terms of mapping, like a single 1994 style map or something. TeamNOVA alumni - People who helped work on the first NOVA who are coming back to contribute to this one. Other experienced mappers - Mappers who are not new, who didn't work on the first NOVA, but nonetheless wish to contribute the the project. 11 map slots in the final megawad will be reserved for new mappers or collaborations featuring new mappers. I want new mappers to have at least a third of the project under their own contribution to keep with the spirit of the original NOVA intention. New mappers may make as many maps as they wish for this project. Likewise, TeamNOVA alumni may make as many maps as they wish, as long as the new mappers still get to maintain their 11 map slots. Other experienced mappers however, may only contribute one map to the project, unless the second map is a collaboration with someone else (either a new mapper, TeamNOVA alumni or another experienced mapper who hasn't used up their single map slot for something else). I've limited participation for other experienced mappers in this project as I want ample room to be left for TeamNOVA alumni and new mappers (whom this project is primarily made for). If we receive more than 32 maps for this project and have to cull some for the final product, new mappers will be given priority over TeamNOVA alumni, who will be given priority over other experienced mappers. A first contribution by someone for the project will be given priority over a second or third contribution by someone regardless of which group the mappers fall into. What maps end up making the project will otherwise be decided by which was finished first (probably the most important thing), who is willing to set aside their map for someone elses and group consensus on the issue. MIDIs You can also donate MIDIs to the project to help with the soundtrack of NOVA: New Dawn as each map will have its own unique score as chosen by the author. We might not be able to use all of these but they are still much appreciated. Textures and Packs https://www.mediafire.com/?dpjherapy5jfflp https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwDHnezIDIVgZGVOdjZob0JpRTg/edit?usp=sharing (alternate link) The NOVA II texture pack, compiled by plums. Consists of stuff from Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Final Doom and the Doom Alphas. Credits to GreyGhost, Deathz0r, Dragonsbrethren, Kaiser and Emil Brundage as the pack was assembled from resources they provided, and also TeamTNT and id Sofware cause they of course, made the textures. Instructions on how to use the custom texture pack (also by plums): http://www.doomworld.com/vb/post/1279965 I'm also allowing custom recolours of textures from this pack, as well as allowing the ability for mappers to make their own textures if needed. Pulling stuff from other texture packs with credits and permission due is also acceptable. Make sure any new textures used have unique filenames from the NOVA II pack so there are no clashes when using them. Might want to prefix your own custom textures with a name abbreviation to be sure. For example, as kildeth, my textures might all start with the prefix KIL-. The NOVA II texture pack with all the recolours/author-made textures will be provided along with the final .wad file for use by the Doom community. It would be great if we could share them around during the project as well. Unless someone has a really specific idea that they want certain textures to be reserved for (secret map?), this could add consistency to the final product as well as spur inspiration for multiple maps. 16. @Jaxxoon_R - Sure it is. Hope everyone had a good holidays. Listen guys, things in my life are changing at the moment and it looks like I won't have much time to spend on Doom projects. I hate to say it but I think I'll have to take a break for awhile as I don't want to suck at leading a project I don't have time for. :P Best of luck guys and I hope to play a completed NOVA II someday when I've got more free time again. - kildeth.
  17. Hi all, haven't looked at Doomworld for a couple of weeks as I've just finished uni and have been taking a break from everything but I'll be sure to check updates and release an alpha compilation of the works thus far when I'm ready for it. I haven't disappeared. :)

NOVA: The Birth - v1.1 release now on idGames!

Thanks! I might work at it a little bit myself now just to do some of the fixes Caleb13 brought up and then we should be good to upload to /idgames.
  19. Really good layout. Gives me nostalgia for Doom I and it's maps.

NOVA: The Birth - v1.1 release now on idGames!

What should we do? Plums has been gone for nearly a month and I'm not sure when (s)he's coming back. There is a more recent update for NOVA than the one on /idgames so if you want Jaws In Space, you can just apply your updates to that and then I'll send it to /idgames as an update if Plums is still not here by December. How does that sound? Newest NOVA update (I'm pretty sure?) http://www.mediafire.com/download/uki53gdd757nip0/NOVA11b3.zip If Plums does come back at a later date and wants to continue working, we can always make a 1.2 update.
  21. I thought it might make a few people uncomfortable but it was worth the suggestion as some people thought Doom itself was too controversial with its hell theme when it was released. :P We could make it a false representation of God being the villain if it's going to lose people and that would make more sense. As for the theme, I was thinking of something medieval and churchy for heaven, rahter than fluffy clouds and beacons which might be harder to implement. Oh, and my plan wasn't necessarily going to promote the abandonment of religion as a moral cause, as the third path you go on was going to be full of demons also and it was supposed to represent a godless existence. My idea was that the moral would be more about how there can be evil disguised in any path and it is up to the individual to see past that and overcome it.
  22. Enlarging superluigieth's map and retexturing it probably wouldn't be a bad idea so go for it I say. I had an idea for a MAP30 too, named 'A Deal With the Devil Gods' where you not only fight the forces of hell and Satan but God and heaven as well. The south of the map would be the hellish Satan part, and it would be labelled 'A Deal With the Devil God'. The heaven part in the north of the map would be labelled the same, except adding a comma to change meaning, thus 'A Deal With the Devil, God'. Both parts of the map could have their own Icon of Sin type thing representing God and Satan. Putting hell in the south and heaven in the north would also represent the notion of 'As Above, So Below' and since both sides would ultimately be the enemy, this could be the plot twist of the wad - the heaven above is as bad as the hell below. After both heaven and hell are defeated, maybe have some big exit thing in the east side of the map representing nature and personal discovery/spirituality away from the gods, possibly with a final set of battles representing personal demons and evil on Earth and the physical realm. The wad could end with the player exiting out to a place with sea and a huge colourful sunrise (sky transfer?), representing the 'New Dawn' which would reference the title of the wad. I also like the name 'As Below, So Above' for this MAP30 idea, with maybe 'A Deal With the Devil Gods' being the alternate title used on the automap like with Circle of Death/'O' of Destruction in Doom II. It would be a collaboration of course since the map would have to be quite large to incorporate everything.
  23. Added you to the list. By the way does anyone know where plums has gone? He has the latest update to the first Nova megawad and I need it for the idgames reupload.
  24. Report your progress whenever everyone as it is November now. I'm still finishing up with uni stuff and will compile everything when I get time. I've downloaded every map that has been submitted and got it in a folder so it's all organised for when I do get around to putting the first alpha together.
  25. AD_79 - Yeah sure. I'll sign you up as a mapper. Seeing as it is nearing November, I'll probably compile the first alpha sometime soon. Right now though I'm waiting on plums to come back and give me his update of the first NOVA mapset so we can get that sorted and re-uploaded to /idgames.
