  1. I happened to notice that last year a crazed miniature converting artist nicknamed Fire Light took a bunch of Warhammer 40,000 minis and converted them loosely based on the looks of various Doom monsters. Here's the couple galleries Fire Light has on the stuff: https://picasaweb.google.com/100059515749203595775/DoomProject https://picasaweb.google.com/100059515749203595775/DOOM I'd say they are pretty interesting takes on the Doom art style, but personally I was a little disappointed they draw more inspiration from Doom 3 than the classic Dooms. I've never been that much into the look of the Doom 3 demons. Regardless, there's a few highlights I enjoyed a lot, especially the cacodemons and keycards (heh).
  2. In the recent Doomguy vs. Master Chief fight video I noticed an impressive Doom fanart work seen here: The piece was made by a guy on deviantART using the non-catchy nickname AzakaChi-RD-17. Turns out he has made more Doom stuff since then, my absolute favorite shown below: Another two pieces he has made include another stylish Baron depiction plus one featuring a Cacodemon, which I didn't fancy as much.

exp(x), it looks like the university deleted your account (or gives a 404 for some other reason). If this is indeed the case, do you have an alternative webspace available where you could store the builds?

    What are you playing now?

Just finished playing through Scythe 2 in co-op. It took us almost a year, playing one session of a few maps every month. It was a big and highly enjoyable challenge to tackle through with a mate, highly recommended.
  5. Ok, it's done and in /idgames now, initial post updated accordingly. Hope you guys will enjoy it!
  6. Just a few days ago the 18th Doomsday happened. During that morning I got the feeling that I wanted to honor my favorite game somehow. So I baked a cake; a virtual birthday cake in the form of a vanilla mod based on the one Espi made in 2003. Unfortunately I didn't manage to finish the level during Doomsday, and had to put the finishing touches into it during these couple days. But oh well, at least it's still Doom's birthmonth. =P The level is in essence minimalistic and small, but features a fairly challenging fight and quite an unusual premise and theme, with birthday elements mixed into the unholy and surreal. Essential linkage:Main download at /idgames Screenshot (ZDoom used for handy screenshotting, the WAD isn't really compatible with it)EDIT/update: done and uploaded to /idgames!
  7. Thanks! And yeah, lower skill levels have less pesky balloons to worry about.

    Impressive Doom fanart by AzakaChi-RD-17

Do you perhaps want to further specify what you find lacking in these? Personally I'd love to hear a more detailed critical analysis on them from another artist. Especially as a pure amateur I find these pretty mesmerizing myself.

Movement and its effect on damage

I'm very curious about this bug, could you (or someone else) specify how it works and how can it be taken advantage of exactly? Sounds like a tactic which could be useful from time to time.

    PrBoom-Plus, ver. 2.5.1.4

Thanks, that fixed the issue. =)

    PrBoom-Plus, ver. 2.5.1.4

A couple things I've noticed or am curious about in 2.5.1.1. Firstly there seems to be a software mode rendering issue in Doom II MAP22 exit room ceiling. You easily notice it if you just strafe back and forth in the room. I believe other Doom II IWAD areas are also affected by similar issues, but it's easiest to spot in the room I mentioned. Secondly I get annoying sound stuttering on average maybe once in 10 seconds, though the frequency varies quite a bit. It occurs in prboom-plus.exe while using the uncapped framerate and it doesn't occur in glboom-plus.exe at all. Sound effects seemed to stutter regardless of various settings I tried and MIDI stutters with sound fonts used under SDL/TiMidity & Fluidsynth. Based on a few quick tests the issue seems to affect version 2.5.0.1 and 2.5.0.8 but not versions 2.2.6.19 and 2.4.3.1. I haven't tried with other versions yet. In case it matters, I have Windows 7 64-bit and I'm using the VIA VT1708s integrated sound board. And a couple automap questions. Is textured automap coming for the software mode later? I know at least ZDoom currently has that. And will there be a menu binding option for the overlay map key in future versions?

    Chocolate Doom

I fully agree with Gez and entryway. Oh yeah, and another freshly implemented PrBoom+ feature I'd love to see borrowed into Choco is the ability to switch from windowed mode to fullscreen and vice versa during runtime.

    Chocolate Doom

As noted in earlier messages, the main issue indeed lies in the crappy MIDI support of the new Windows versions. In addition to using OPL emulation, the other currently possible workaround is using TiMidity and a sound font for MIDI playback. Here's a guide for setting it up if you wish to give it a shot. I think I'll try writing up a Choco wiki FAQ section on the Windows MIDI issues at some point, as these questions definitely are "frequently asked" with Windows 7 becoming commonplace.

    girls who play doom

I've played multiplayer Doom with a female roommate, one of my favorite WADs was made by a woman, the author of a bunch of legendary Doom fan fiction is a chick, BahdKo could probably kick the ass of most male Doom deathmatch players... and so on. Female Doom fans might be a minority, but I do hope no one honestly believes in the silly "girls don't play Doom" myth anymore. Plus video gaming at large is an area of life which has been slowly extinguishing its traditionally male-dominated hierarchy and mindset. Which is pretty cool, as it allows people to ignore limiting and stereotypical gender roles more easily and just enjoy games they find interesting.
  15. I like the concept, but I also hope you will somehow make this differ in name from the classic Phobia WAD by Kristus.

    Chocolate Doom

The Chocolate Doom wiki is loading awfully slow for me, it can even take tens of seconds to load a single page. And it has been this way for around a week now. Is anyone else getting this?

So my nerdiness got me into Doom95 again.

I assume you've been trying to record demos via the launcher. This isn't a suitable solution with Doom95, even with the unofficial demo recording bug fix (even that won't remove the 128kb demo limitation). What you need to do is start recording via the command line using regular vanilla parameters, with the addition of "-nodm", which makes the game skip the launcher and records the game as instructed. Overall I feel the port is redundant outside personal nostalgia value. Just the distorted graphics and sound along with the missing DeHackEd support can be very annoying. It does certainly seem that pretty much the only people appreciating the port at this point are those who originally skipped vanilla and had their first taste of Doom with Doom95. Though I guess the launcher can be useful if you have not yet memorized the command line arguments or just prefer setting up stuff via menus. Using the command line is a faster method though, and that's what matters to me the most.

    Of Controllers and D-Pads

If any of you have any further experiences with good third party controllers (especially modern ones still being sold), I'd love to hear them. And for those who are frustrated with the clunky X360 D-pad and/or love oldschool 2D games or any other stuff where the D-pad is preferred, I'd recommend this Hori controller for X360/Windows. It has a great D-pad, but in turn its sticks aren't as good as those on the Microsoft controller. I believe Logitech has actually retained the similar D-pad design throughout its main gamepad lineup, all the way up to the very latest models. So if you, for instance, obtain this one you should experience the same feel.

    doom Humor Art

Could be. I always thought it (and other demons) are genderless and reproduce by magical/unholy means, but I'm not exactly an expert on Doom or any other hellish lore.

    A Voyage into id

The Bethesda Blog recently published a blog post and a Flickr photo tour featuring the id Software office. Among the contained Doom highlights are the Doom shotgun (aka TootsieToy Dakota), as well as most likely the best public photos so far taken of the original latex and metal models of Arch-Vile, Mancubus, Revenant and Spiderdemon, all in glorious high resolution.

Damn. I guess that's my punishment for being a lazy ass and copy/pasting the model photo links from this thread.

    The Doom Confessional Booth

Occasionally my obsessive automap completist side surfaces, and I need to fill the automapping of a level before I give myself permission to exit it. Of course without touching IDDT or by picking up the computer map item. During recent years I've developed a habit out of playing through Doom II MAP01 and MAP02 at least once a week, sometimes as often as once a day. Overall I've probably played them hundreds of times. Nearly every time I play MAP01, I do this: And enjoy it immensely each time.
