  1. Someone recently dropped by #chocolate-doom to ask about using Doomseeker for finding and launching Chocolate Doom multiplayer games. He said he wasn't able to join a game and that Chocolate didn't even launch. Unfortunately he left before I could ask him further details on the issue.

So out of curiosity I tried setting up Doomseeker on my own system (Win7). I believe I've configured it correctly, with correct paths to the IWADs and game executable(s). But when I choose to join the only available (empty) server and configure the match launch parameters in the Doomseeker popup window, Doomseeker simply crashes upon trying to launch Chocolate. I've tried numerous different parameter strings, but they all seem to crash Doomseeker. What gives?

  2. As tends to happen with each new Doom release, Doom 3: BFG Edition has generated a fair amount of buzz in the gaming media and fandom. Here are several noteworthy bits from the last few weeks:

  3. To add to the news bit, Ultimate Doom and Doom II also got the price cut, which is definitely good news. I see the new pricing a much better fit for these games, considering their age and distributed format. However, I do hope the Master Levels situation isn't permanent. Steam was the last retail outlet selling them (excluding the second-hand market), after all.

Perhaps also worth a mention is the removal of three Doom 3 engine games: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Prey and the 2009 Wolfenstein remake. They were removed earlier though, and their removal most probably isn't related to the BFG Edition.

My PrBoom-Plus often hangs with new computer: one and the same sound repeats and PrBoom-Plus don't closes correctly, with task manager only.
    Windows 7, 64 bit.

Have you tried setting process_affinity_mask in the cfg to zero? Which MIDI player are you using? And perhaps running the executable as the admin could help.

they didn't fork this version from the previous Xbox port.

They didn't? I thought Quasar had already found evidence supporting an Xbox-heritage. Not that I've ever seen the evidence myself. If any technical details are actually documented somewhere, it should definitely be added to the wiki's Xbox and Xbox 360 articles.

Also, I'd like to see some research and documentation effort put into the (possible) differences between the XBLA classic Dooms and the BFG Edition ones. Might actually start on that tomorrow myself.

  6. I gotta add a little pointer for folk playing vanilla/Chocolate cooperative and lacking voice chat. Run the game with a WAD that makes the pause graphic invisible (here's one), pause the game when a nasty situation arises and then use the text chat to come up with a coordinated plan as necessary. Make sure it's ok with your teammates to pause the game beforehand, though.

An interesting, survival-esque variation of vanilla coop is to mutually agree not to use player respawn, restarting the level and server upon all players dying. If it feels too challenging, keep in mind that vanilla allows mid-game saving in multiplayer too. Thus allowing a save or two during a level can make things feel more relaxed. Of course all this requires closing and restarting the game executable, so setting up shortcuts or batch files for the stuff makes it much less of a hassle.

How many games these days allow you to play basically the single player game but in coop mode? Of those, how many are worth playing in the first place?

Personally I feel there have been many great campaign coop games during the last few years. Off the top of my head I could recommend Alien Swarm, Castle Crashers, Jamestown, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Orcs Must Die 2, Rayman Origins, Renegade Ops, Sanctum, Streets of Rage Remake and the Trine games. If you need further ideas, this site should be helpful.

Sorry, it has been a few years since I visited something on Doomworld which weren't the Doom General, Wads & Mods or the Doom Speed Demos forums.

No worries, I assume many people here do the same. So perhaps this thread will give other such people the opportunity to check out this kick-ass tune they might have missed otherwise. I provided a link to the earlier thread mostly to avoid redundant crossposting.

I have noticed an odd issue. If you alt-tab in Chocolate Doom on Windows, and then navigate back to Choco by any means, the automap (or whatever you have bound to Tab) goes haywire. For some reason, Odamex exhibits the same behavior, but Eternity and pr+ do not.

Are the exact conditions and game behavior the same as in this earlier bug report? If so, I can definitely confirm it happening on my system also. And fraggle commented it probably being a Windows or SDL issue beyond his control.
