  1. Seconded! You keep putting out amazingly great stuff in no time, how do you do it? :O Teach me your secrets please! I haven't made progress on "I hate slaughter" and haven't been able to touch "Autophagy" yet, but this one definitely goes into the ever-growing list too :P

Aquí van, con comentario. Te debo el 5! ;) MAP03 MAP04

what are you working on? I wanna see your wads.

Have been obsessed with fivefold symmetry (Penrose tiling and stuff) lately :P These are some experiments I've been doing in boom format, I think it looks cool
  4. I've been wondering what kind of changes in a map can lead to demo desyncing. My intuition tells me that changes to the geometry of the map and different item placement (e.g. remove a medikit the player picked up in their playthrough) could potentially affect demos, while things like texture alignment changes should not. That being said, back then when I used to record Duke Nukem 3D speedruns, the demo files were extremely sensitive to any kind of changes in the maps, to the point where removing sprites that were not even in the player's path would cause them to desync. I know that's a totally different engine, but I thought I might as well ask what's the case in Doom, just to be 100% sure.

  6. Thanks for your comments! @ChaosSmurf @DrR0Ck @SportsterV90 BTW, just wanted to give everyone a heads up about this contest I'm running involving this wad. I reckon it'll get more attention if I post it here (I guess I should've done it earlier, but yeah, what can I do :P)

    [Challenge] FIND THE BFG!

There has been an unexpected development: @Insaneprophet, in an incredibly selfless gesture, has decided to decline his prize, all for the sake of extending the contest a little longer. How awesome is that? :) (In any case, he will remain on the podium as the second winner, no doubt about that). That means the contest is still going strong, with one more prize up for grabs! Don't miss this oportunity :D

    [Challenge] FIND THE BFG!

I just watched @Klear's solution, well done! :D Hereby I declare the contest finalized. As some of you suggested, I'll leave the challenge open to anyone interested. I won't post the solution here, but feel free to message me directly if you tried and gave up or if you're just curious but don't feel like figuring it out yourself. Congratulations to all the winners, and thanks to everyone that participated! :D Ohhh come on, you're being way too harsh on yourself :)

Do you obsessively playtest your own maps?

Nice thread! For me, playtesting is not only something I do in order to hunt for bugs and stuff, but it's rather a crucial part of the creative process itself. Whenever I implement a new room, a fight, a puzzle, you name it, I run it and see how it plays and then iterate on that. Since non-linear maps are my thing, I also play them a lot to try to get an idea of whether the progression flows naturally or if it feels forced/confusing. I also find playtesting a partial map very useful in order to come up with new ideas on how to continue it, especially if you're having a mapper's block. In general, if you see a map published by me, you can safely assume that it has been played tens, if not hundreds of times by myself during the whole development, and at least once by one or more playtesters once it's in a more or less finished state.

Changes in maps vs demo desyncing

I see... I guess then, given the nature of the changes I need to implement, demo desyncing would be rather difficult to avoid. It's not a big deal in any case. Thanks everyone for your input!

Found yet another analysis, this time from Matthew Ventures, a developer who happens to be an id software employee:

You guys gotta be quick, as we've already got a second winner, namely, @Insaneprophet :D Congratulations! ONLY ONE PRIZE LEFT!!!

    [Challenge] FIND THE BFG!

Just watched @Dragonfly's videoproof. Well done and well earned prize, congratulations! :D BTW, by watching his playthrough, I realized that the description of where the "fuse cutter" linedef is located was not specific enough, so I updated it in the OP. That's sadly just a regular secret. The BFG is slightly more difficult to find :P

    [Challenge] FIND THE BFG!

WOOHOO! Congrats @Dragonfly! :D I can't wait to watch the video. hehe, that was exactly the idea :) The secret has been there for ages, even in the beta version, and was implemented with the idea in mind of eventually hosting this contest. Thanks a lot for participating!

Supplice - Out now on Steam!

I finished the early access version. WOW. @Catpho I see your point regarding the text terminals, but for me it's actually the opposite. I definitely prefer this way of presenting the story over cutscenes or something of the sort, as it grants the player the freedom to choose when, and even if, they want to read them, and you can come back to them as many times as you want in case something was not clear. I also like the fact that they offer a nice break in-between the action. And if you are only interested in the action that gets triggered after accessing the terminal, you can just skip the whole text and resume playing. Besides, being a big fan of Marathon, I really loved seeing text terminals implemented in Supplice, and I couldn't help but wonder if the dev team took some inspiration from there (@Mechadon?). The space colony, the whole "AI gone rogue" thing, etc., I got a lot of Marathon vibes from the story. And the text in the terminals is amazingly well written, the dialogues with the AI were brilliant, made me chuckle (and even lol) a couple of times. And well, as for the game itself, I don't know what to say. Everything is just top-notch. The levels are gorgeous, the gunplay is super satisfying, the music is incredible, and the texture/sprite-work is sublime. Let me put it this way: I've played most of the popular modern Boomer shooters out there, but none of them made me feel the same level of excitement I felt as a kid when playing an FPS until now. Congratulations to the whole team, I can't wait to play the next episodes :) PS: a couple of very minor nitpicks:

You can do it yourself as a challenge if you want, but the whole map is already available in the Doomwiki article.
  21. Nice input from @Captain red pants and @Creaphis @Dweller, I can relate to many of the things you described. Anything that has to do with words requires a lot of effort for me. Writing anything, sometimes even a simple whatsapp message, can take me hours. I just leave it as a draft and come back to it countless times just to make sure I'm actually expressing what I want to express, and some times I just end up deleting what I wrote as I get frustrated from not being able to translate this "nebula of amorphous thoughts" into sentences that make sense. Speaking is even worse, as you have the pressure of having to build sentences in real time. It makes me super anxious. I got diagnosed with ADHD for the first time last year, being 36 years old, and I just wish I got diagnosed earlier, as I spent most of my life wondering what's wrong with me. I went through depressions, addictions, etc., which later I realized were nothing but side effects of the untreated ADHD. Now, I'm not telling you have ADHD, but given your description, I think there's a big chance you might have some sort of neurodivergent disorder. I can't stress enough how important it was for me to have a diagnosis. Just the fact of knowing that the way I feel and experience things has a name, a treatment and that I'm not alone in it, was tremendously helpful. Had I been diagnosed earlier, it would have saved me a lot of trouble in my life. But that being said, it's never too late, so I really encourage you to look for a psychotherapist/psychiatrist that can help you figure out what's going on. I understand that it costs money, I'm not from the US, so I don't know what are your options, but I really hope you can find a way of getting the professional help you need :)

    The hardest map to map

I agree with maps 29-32. The same applies to EXM7-9. MAP07 is also a challenging slot, as there are usually high expectations regarding an innovative use of tags 666/667.
  23. Heh, you're absolutely right, dumb me uploaded the same video twice lol. I updated my post with the right video. It's uploading now, it should be available in half an hour or so :) I'm glad the feedback has been useful! :)
  24. Hey! Took me long, but here are some more playthroughs :) (I still owe you E1M8) I found a couple of issues, namely: - In E1M6, you can get softlocked in the first area if you happen to fall down the platform as it's going up. - In E1M7, some monsters didn't teleport in. E1M5 E1M6 E1M7
