New Shadow Warrior game looks pretty awesome

If you are referring to ROTT, the game's production values were too low for me to take it seriously. If every dev had the same mentality as them, we'd still be playing Wolfenstein 3D clones.
  2. Looks a bit goofy if you ask me.

New Shadow Warrior game looks pretty awesome

Oh look, another "classic FPS" made by the Painkiller devs. Games like this prove that people don't actually know what makes a classic FPS. Where are is the nonlinearity and the ATMOSPHERE?!Why does everyone forget the latter. The guns look great though and Bethseda could take a few lessons for TES6 when it comes to melee combat.
  4. As a novice mapper, I can give you some advice based on what I've learned. 1. Download Ultimate Simplicity and study it. The project was made to prove a point when people were still learning how to properly map in Zdoom and made a lot of superfluous detail that actually made the maps uglier. As the name suggests, the maps are SIMPLE but clean and have a certain balance and finesse to them that many Zdoom maps of the time simply lacked. Any novice mapper should pick this up. Although I made some really cool stuff in my first map (which is still WIP) before playing the WAD, studying Simplicity made my life easier when making the design cleaner. You should really do this whether you want to be a Zdoom mapper or not. 2. Study UDoom and its architecture and for your first map I recommend using only the DEFAULT Doom/Doom 2 textures. Using only the default textures basically forces you to overcome the game's limits and be creative, this is hugely beneficial to your skills and will make you a much better mapper than using Zdoom. Oh and make simple (but clean and pleasant) architecture in the beginning, don't make sector furniture or try to make the maps too "realistic". The best maps are a combination of abstract shapes and some degree of realism/believably. You might say that the default texture pallete is too limited but you can do some truly awesome stuff using just Doom 1 stuff. EMBRACE what Doom is about while still trying to make it more refined or believable. 3. Here is my modding motto "The first thing I release on the internet should always be better than what other people post on the internet for the first time" In short, have standards and don't release a bad map simply because you are new. 4. Do not be afraid to delete rooms of your maps if they are not up to snuff. I've done this millions of times in my first map (and still am). Again, have standards and if it's for the good of your map DO IT, no matter how much time you invested in it.

    Doom 4 should have...

E1M5, E1M7 and E2M7 (Always thought E2M7 would sound very cool with an orchestra and organs) as well.

    iPhone

What's the deal with IPhones anyway? Why should I get one over a much cheaper smartphone. I never understood the Apple craze.

    Lack of hype... bad?

That didn't work the last time (apparently). But yeah, as long as it's not a COD clone, I'll be...content.

    Lack of hype... bad?

This is probably the most difficult thing Id could face. The biggest problem with a Doom sequel (besides enormously high expectations) is that Doom can be many different things to a lot of people and the thing is that no version is necessarily true or false. For instance, some people want only non-stop action with heavy metal blasting, others (like me) want it to be atmospheric, moody and slightly slower gameplay with a great art direction while others want a combination of this. The problem is made even bigger due to distortions of the perception of Doom because of games like Painkiller and more recently ROTT who make people think that Doom is ONLY about killing. The problem with D3 was that it only contained the moodiness of Doom without much variation and because the length of the game, in the end it suffered for it. My ideal D4 would be 33% moodiness, 33% action, 33% exlploration. I think people should be cautiously optimistic tbh but with Carmack at Oculus now, I think we can expect D4 to be one of the most refined Rift experiences, possibly even the first. If done right, it could be the new Doom/Quake. I don't think Quake was necessarily famous because of the graphics (I think it was ugly) but because it provided new possibilities and the Rift could be just that. Of course the game would also have to be good.

    Lack of hype... bad?

Absolutely agree, nowadays it's very hard to impress people with graphics like in the 90's anymore, partly because back then when you doubled the poly count on a model, the difference was huuuge, today, the difference isn't so noticeable. There was a photo an an article that proved this but I can't find it. Sure improvements in texture quality are still very noticeable but graphics are getting very close to "good enough", just look at Frostbyte 3, it looks friggin amazing. Maybe that's why the current console generation lasted so much? Maybe Id switched to megatextures because of this? I view megatextures as a complementary feature for the art style, not necessarily an improvement in graphical fidelity. EDIT: Oh and Geekmarine, the lack of hype is because releasing info about a game too early could damage it in the long run. Just look at RAGE, people thought it was going to be the new Fallout when Id never intended it to be that way.

    Wolfenstein: The New Order annouced

Quite true about level design. I just hope it won't be just a straight line with the occasional secret but the secret I saw was very much in the vein of Wolfenstein. They also said they would provide tactical positions for stealth kills. They keep referring to the game as "action-adventure" I wonder what that means. I REALLY wish someone important from the community on behalf of Doomworld interviewed them and asked the hard questions like how linear the game truly is. I am also not sure about giving BJ a personality, just how much can you do with an 80s action hero? The villains seem very cool though.

    Wolfenstein: The New Order annouced

From what I've noticed in the new trailer, iron sights are not required for efficient shooting. The game also looks and sounds amazing, very unique. Wanna bet that the Nazis discovered some time travelling mumbo jumbo under castle Wolfenstein? My gut tells me this sets the premise of the game. Here's another trailer with extra footage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucVZuXMHX1U
  12. Now while Willits is still there and besides, we don't even know if he's suited to work on a modern game.

    Wolfenstein: The New Order annouced

Here's another article http://www.pcgamer.com/previews/wolfenstein-the-new-order-hands-on-fighting-nazis-in-the-moon-dome/?utm_source=fb&utm_medium=emp I'm surprised how little people care about this.

    You have proof?
  15. They were not involved in development in any way. Carmack made engines, Hollenshead was the administrator.
  16. I just hope this won't affect Doom 4, it is my last hope for a truly good modern Doom but from what I've seen in the new Wolfenstein, I'm a little relieved. I know it's made by Machinegames but Wolfenstein (and recent Bethesda games) prove that Bethesda are not interested in making run of the mill shooters and care about respecting the franchise. They even gave them quite a long dev time (since 2009). On a more optimistic note, I bet Doom 4 will be one of the most refined Rift experiences because of JC. Now we just need some sort of lightgun to go with it and we could expect something the magnitude of Doom/Quake again. Yeah, my gut tells me that THIS is what he was referring to when he said he'd still remain at Id. Time will tell but one thing's for certain, if they fuck up Doom 4, I will be very mad and will never forgive them and I won't care that it's because JC left.
  17. I'm quite sure he won't completely abandon id, just not work full time there. He said Oculus > Id > Armadillo atm.
  18. From what I understand, he's still working there. I think only Kevin cloud is still there full time from the original Id.

I'd rather they focus on the multiplayer.

    Battlefield 3

The campaign is just a lure for COD players and an excuse to pour copious amounts of eye-candy (which I am not against of)
  22. There is already such socftware but I forgot its name. Check out mtbs3d.com
  23. Quake made people buy 3D accelerators, maybe Doom 4 will do the same with Oculus Rift.
  24. Holy shit man, imagine Doom 4 with THAT! My gut tells me that D4 will be specially tailored with Oculus Rift in mind. Imagine a more refined version of this game, it could have the same impact as the original or Quake!
  25. It gives hope to us nerds lol. I could see it happening with Kinect Mocap and Oculus rift I find it scary how casually thinks this could be bigger than the atomic bomb and how it could become like a video game and then they go straight to Deus Ex-like augmentations. It's kind of surreal, maybe it's intended. Can't wait for gggmork to post here.
