  1. I think most people realize id's best work is back in the 90's, it's not impossible but i just don't see them making the impact they did back then again, Doom 3 followed trends set by other games and so will probably Doom4 and Rage, they stopped leading the pack. One of the major differences in modern FPS is that you feel like you are on a movie set, especially in Crysis 2 it felt like i was walking around a mock set. Games from the 90's felt like very basic but independent worlds\environments, like little contained worlds. Of course it could just be that my imagination was more vivid back then but it feels true as i say it. I look forward to Doom4 and Rage though, i just like the FPS genre in general, if anybody has an old Xbox see if you can track down Breakout, it wasn't perfect but had some groundbreaking presentation that will hopefully start to show up in some modern games. (it really was first person)

    Regenerating Health

I can't remember, it was at a friends house and i started a game and had to pump so many bullets into a human before he would die, and when they died they went flying, it looked and felt retarded. Redux removed the tacky crosshair, the stupid gravity that would send bodies flying, the ugly ass hud, anomalies were invisible and enabled bleeding on enemies and fixed the broken economy as well as many other things (realistic gun ballistics :D:D:D:D ). It's a good example of a mod that greatly enhances the game without having to add a ton of shit, it mostly balanced parameters. AMK was similar too i think, i never played it but it was very well respected mod, i think it was Russian. Anyway i loved Stalker to death once i brought it because the first thing i did was find a mod like Redux, i did troll the guy who developed the mod later and got him upset but i still respect what they did.

Does Romero still map for Doom?

I can barely remember it, i played it on 64 was a weird game.

I made a new Doom frontend... tell me what you guys think!

Pretty neat looking program, nice work.
  5. It took me a few re-reads to get the meaning of the first quote dur durr :O For any other slow people out there, sounds like Rage will be less cutscenes and moar actionz. Are the id guys working on both games at the same time?

How do you REALLY feel about Doom 3?

It's not gonna happen but i loved Painkillers metal tracks that picked up as the action did. I'm sick of all the orchestra type music that fills most fps\games, hopefully they do something interesting with Doom4, something old-school :D \edit i think the drummer of NIN had something to do with Doom3

Stalker un-modded was terrible, i remember laughing at it. I ended up picking it up for $5 on a whim and playing it with the Redux mod and it changed the game entirely. It was extremely brutal with enemies bleeding to death from chest wounds or even leg wounds etc. The mod itself was tiny (about 8mg) and only changed values of different text files but it made such a difference.

I just got a phone call from the FBI...

Im not sure that giving everyone free access to guns is the answer, hasn't really worked for your country so far. I think we need more layers of law enforcement though, police cannot be everywhere at once, some kind of trained neighbourhood watch or something. Stopping people from becoming criminals in the first place should probably be the real focus though, and i doubt that is an easy issue. Education (not just Maths\Eng but also education on emotion\impulse\needs), quality of life, life style\culture would all be a factor.

Good to see they take their job serious though (the FBI)
  10. Some crazy Brazilian Luis Johnson: the sound is really low on this one, watch at 18 seconds this old black guy just goes nuts. Primus: Hamburger Train Primus: Hellbound 17 1/2 Les Claypool & Buckethead (Warning: this one is kind of creepy, it has a man wearing pijamas charming a guy with a KFC bucket on his head)
  11. I lost interest in guitar a while ago and moved onto bass, but these two are still my favorite instrumental musicians. Joes Satriani: Redshift Riders Steve Vai: Bad Horsie I also get a big boner for Funk Primus: Tippi Toes (The Meters cover) The Meters: Funky Miracle

    Showing games during the development

I agree but pirating has solved this for me, i rarely purchase a game without trying it first. I know that opens another line of discussion (that usually ends in flame and lecture), but i find i end up buying games i like, even if i get the pirated copy. The times i don't pirate first i usually end up regretting it like with Homefront :( Rage i am not that interested in so i will probably try it out first, but Doom4 is the sort of thing i pre-order. Companies really need to start making demos again but i think they worry it will drop sales because people will have a chance to see if their game is crap or not.

what does boran mean, sounds like a name you would give to someone's fat sister.
  14. Hey, this looks really cool. I would like to be a tester if you still need people, just let me know what sort of feedback you are after.

    The /newstuff Chronicles #383

I redownloaded fear of the dark and opened it up in Doombuilder and it looks like you put a teleport where you wanted the player to spawn (the big shotgun room), it would be an easy mistake to do because both the icons for these are green in the editor. Other than that i liked the map, it reminded me of Quake for some reason, i think both maps are good enough to be a part of one of those community thingos or even your own episode replacement if you ever make one.

    Doom: Planet Wars

Yeah there's some pretty cool ideas, the levels look really funky too like some mad man designed them.

    Showing games during the development

I used to read a lot about games in development on near release, but i was always slightly dissapointed because the language used in articles always made things sound fancier than they really turned out to be (also my imagination would get carried away). The result was always slight dissapointment with the final release. The final straw was Fable though, the developer outright lied about what was going to be in the game. The game was good when taken on it's own merits, but never lived up to the hype and wasn't even half the game it was made out to be. I literally stopped reading about games after that and it's been good ever since, hype really ruins a lot of games, i prefer to know nothing about the game untill i actually start playing it. [edit] As an exagerated example, the radiant AI in Oblivion was supposed to be epic but in reality.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ATh4y4XRjA make sure you keep watching until the lizard lady breaks, i cacked myself for half an hour watching this MIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMI! FILTHY PICKPOCKET! MIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMIMI!

    Sodaholic's new chainsaw

Meh, you knock skib to try and look good with the other blokes. Either way, there's no law being broken by including a chainsaw in the game, id didn't invent chainsaws. Doom only costs $10 these days though so Freedom is a kinda weird project, good community thing i guess though.

    Regenerating Health

I felt the difficulty was really balanced, it's relatively easy during the hallway sequences but it steadily inreases in intensity untill you reach the boss spots. I'm suprised that it actually got quite a few negative comments (over in the SkullTag forums anyway), it's more intense than most WADS and the original DOOM maps were relatively straigh forward but are all still very enjoyable. There's some really kick ass moments like when you get the chaingun launcher, it's like "YOU HAVE CHAINGUN LAUNCHER" then drops man parade all over you. It surprises me that even within the FPS genre there's enough variety to have different tastes.

    Regenerating Health

I actually take back what i said about health regen. http://www.brdoom.com/mtm/los/ After playing Legacy of Suffering i can see it can be done really well and stil keep a high difficulty. It actually pulls off what Necrovision was trying to do but much better, there are still medpacks but they are just there to help keep you alive during certain encounters as the regen is not really that fast. That mod is friggen sweet too.
  21. Maybe give it variety in its attacks, if you look at games where boss monsters play a major role (Zelda, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus) the player has to learn each bosses characteristics and ways of dealing with each move it might have. Sometimes it shoots a slow projectile, some times it does a ground blast, sometimes it burns lazers across the screen etc etc

    Doom Metroid Style?

Hey, i am new to Doom editing and have started using Doombuilder and it's very addicting (i guess because it's so simple). I'm just wondering if someone could link me to any documentation that might help me with an idea. I always liked how in games like Metroid the player starts with limited health & abilities and eventually gets stronger by collecting things through exploration. Is it possible for the Player to start with low health and eventually collect artifacts that increase the max hp? I guess like the ammo bag in how it increases the max ammo you can hold. I seen DECORATE mentioned a lot, would this be what i need?

    Regenerating Health

Heh, i never played the main quest through, i always thought it was the weakest part of their games since Oblivion. I only ever played Fallout3 Wanderer's Edition mod but it gets boring after a few hours. There is a guy working on a port for Daggerfall called DaggerXL http://daggerxl.wordpress.com/ He intends at first to recreate the original game in a new engine then eventually enhance it, theres a playable build up i think.

The most promising trailer I've ever seen

Hell yeah, my character in the second game was a transsexual clown.

    Regenerating Health

Well there's plenty of mods that remove the fast travel in Fallout\Oblivion. It does make the game feel tacky just having the option floating around but it was easily removed so i don't get the fuss.
