    The /newstuff Chronicles #390

It's worth a look IMO but you should really go with Spire Complex - much better yet. (If you played SpireC and didn't like it, you're unlikely to like CoreBinder; however if you loved SpireC you might just find the Raw Action series to be worth the while.)

On a side note, I also wonder how Ultimate Doomer's stuff, all re-uploaded, will do for reviews. I think it will be interesting, even though they have already been reviewed and they're not really new stuff. Operation: Lightning, from this edition, was definitely his worst contribution, but it was also his first. Fragport also lacks visual quality in many places but is more fun if I remember correctly. Shadowcaster I always found to be a nice and challenging Heretic episode, even if it's no Curse of D'sparil. 007 LTSD was a good introduction into his use of ZDoom, and I always liked Super Sonic Doom personally - it would be great if the new version (which I have not checked out) fixes some of the annoyances of the old. And Serpent: Resurrection is not for everyone, but clearly there was a lot of effort put into it. (That was reviewed just back in November, though, while the other ones haven't been reviewed in a /newstuff for half a decade or more.)

A good serving of /newstuff, though if I counted correctly there's only 13 reviews + I think many of the little classic style stuff in here is underappreciated (particularly Maintenance Sewers & Waste Vats). Even CoreBinder got a decent write-up for its gameplay, and those two maps have pretty similar gameplay and a little more attention to looks. I wonder how his Spire Complex will do for a /newstuff review, as I think that's a step above the Raw Action series.

    Doom Core

Just thought I'd post to let you know the wad's now up for downloading and rating here. :)

    Doom Core

How many levels have you played and what would you rate your enjoyment level thus far?

    Doom Core

Have you actually played (at least a good chunk of) it, and if so what are your personal thoughts without respect to any other particular megawad or era of map making except potentially MM(2)/Requiem? (In particular I'm looking for gameplay and enjoyment, cause that's always by far most important to me.) (I did like MM2 and Requiem a lot, though. First MM and Icarus were pretty nice too but honestly not quite as high on my scale. But I don't want to be playing something similar to those wads yet inferior; I'd like to see if it's something that in your view could've stacked up as MM3 or some other very well-received mid-late 90s [throwback] wad.) Maybe the most simple response would be to give it an honest score on a scale of 5, or 10 if you'd like. And not to mention, all other users feel free to post your consensus here as well. :)

    Doom Core

http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames/newstuff/dcv.zip (Megawad has now reached /newstuff, it will assumably reach /idgames on Doomworld soon.) Anyways I've taken a look and it seems like a (relatively) random collection of maps - but that isn't always a fault, and the desgin looks good if oldschool for the most part. If you've played this wad, would you recommend giving it a spim?

    Doom 2 in a Nutshell

I'm glad to hear this project isn't dead! :) A few things though: 1) I think the file should be named differently or updated to include ALL the finished maps (the first 11 levels are now missing). 2) Are there still plans for a non-strict version as well? 3) General comment, I noticed duplicate areas in a few maps except without monsters (the Tenements 2048 remake would be an example). I can't get what these are there for. 4) Today is 6/30/11. Last update before this on the project was 6/30/10...coincidence? (Oh, and I checked the post times, this thread was precisely 42 minutes short of being free of activity for exactly one year!)

DTWID: Project is done, check the release thread

Well I meant try to mimic it as closely as possible with obvious exception to actual map authors. But even then I was probably going a bit too far.

DTWID: Project is done, check the release thread

I thought it was trying to be as closely as possible but maybe I'm misinterpreting or just going too far.

DTWID: Project is done, check the release thread

Release (and prior to release concentrate at least primarily on) Eps 1-3, wait a little to make sure there's no bugs; then shift concentration to the E4 maps; release when E4's done and make sure there's no bug reports. ID did issue several patches for Doom so rereleasing on a bug report or small suggest change is perfectly acceptable IMO, as long as it is not excessive. I certainly wouldn't call it an "artificial delay", as from what I know no one knew there would be Ultimate Doom when the original three-episode game was originally released! In fact I'm not sure of details here but if ID never said anything to the public about the upcoming extra episode, maybe it would even be appropriate to get it put together outside this thread (using PM's, etc.).

DTWID: Project is done, check the release thread

I think E4 should be in the style of the original E4, and should be released several months or even a year after the first three eps are finalized, because that's how ID did it and therefore it pays full respect for the name of the project - quite literally "Doom the way ID did". And while the /idgames archive may only take the file being replaced when E4's done (due to its no duplicate maps rule), I think a download just for E4 should be included at least on this thread as well, because with ID you could either get the whole package (Ultimate Doom) or just patch your existing Doom version to include the fourth episode. And if possible, have the episodes list only include three episodes if you don't have the fourth one loaded. Like I said before, it's "Doom the way ID did", 100% plain and simple.

    WADs: Most Overrated/Underrated, Most Surprising/Disappointing

Overrated: Not quite sure...I seem to have a wide range of likes so I generally like just about anything the community likes in general. Underrated: KDiZD and Legacy of Suffering, maybe Tribute as well. I generally don't mind (G)ZDoom/even Skulltag stuff at all. And oddly enough, I can't say KDiZD disappointed me at all really. Surprise: I'm for megawads, and for that I would say Scythe and Rebirth. Both fantastic megawads that quite simply appeared out of thin air. Dissapointment: Stronghold, I thought it was actually going to be a good and very involving game given even the '09 caco's mentions it uses details well. But the gameplay style just doesn't "work" for me, especially being a solo-only player. Daedalus was a big dissapointment too, all that work and I couldn't even find my way our of the first hub, never to return.
