[/idgames] Arrokoth - vanilla compatible Ultimate Doom episode
Horus replied to Somniac's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Played through all of this finally, over one month after I said I would on discord :P posted here since you say you don't login to discord much. I had a good time, you succeeded in creating the kind of dark moody atmosphere that you were aiming for, and it was nice playing something that wasn't uber-challenging for a change. E1M9 was quite buggy but the rest of the maps were fairly clean save for a few bugs here and there. I gave some pointers in the video. Videos in the spoiler: -
It’s a very neat trick, I believe it was first applied on this map from 1996 https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/deathmatch/m-o/mcfearsm

Cacowards 2023 Mentionation Thread: (split: reading is a good idea)
Horus replied to Dreamskull's topic in WAD Discussion
The current title states: Cacowards 2023 Mentionation Thread: You Don't Need To Post Myhouse Again I get the enthusiasm over it, but it’s clear it’s winning one by now and we should move on in this thread and let other community wads have their time to shine. -
That sky box is gorgeous

Yes, a lot. I think this is part of the reason I'm so slow at mapping, I iteratively playtest too much.

I will play your WAD and make a video with commentary [ON HIATUS]

This always happens when someone creates this kind of thread - this kind of public playtesting 'service' is in pretty high demand but not many people are doing it -
What sourceport should one test their maps with?
Horus replied to CheeseBaron's topic in WAD Discussion
It’s better to test vanilla maps in chocorenderlimits, because it gives you proper guidance on where your maps fail vanilla limits. I would advise always testing your maps in GZDoom because it is the most popular source port and therefore likely what a lot of the players of your map will use (unless your map is one of the few that don’t work on that source port). DSDA-Doom is the second most popular source port and I would recommend using it to test maps that it works with (i.e. not UDMF). Otherwise an additional source port would be warranted where you are targeting something specific, e.g. Eternity for Eternity UDMF, chocorenderlimits for Vanilla, Zandronum/ZDaemon/Odamex for multiplayer maps, etc. So I wouldn’t burden yourself by unnecessarily testing your map in loads of different source ports, more focus on the important ones to what it is you are trying to do. -
Anything other than it being a factual statement would be out of character for NJ imo. It’s an interesting question, the latter one is in a way hard to answer as in many ways Doom itself takes a backseat, it is more just a platform used to tell a story. But one thing it has inspired me to explore further in my own maps is to give more meaning and interest to optional and secret areas, rather than say the conventional ’trigger closet X to get secret item Y’. It’s something I started doing in my most recent map, and myhouse has made me keen to explore it further and see what I come up with.

Cat: 2 Difficulty: HNTR Dead: Map 03 Monsters killed: 0/40 horus_ironeagle_2023_05.zip

Agreed, inevitably people will draw different conclusions on things than what the author intended or even considered as a possibility, but that doesn’t make their conclusions any less valid. I think it’s better we don’t know the answers to those kind of questions. I certainly don’t blame anyone for being disappointed at not knowing the ‘true’ author because it’s human nature to want to find the answers to these kind of mysteries. But I don’t think the author has a lot to gain by revealing themselves at this point. They might not get ‘credit’, but still get to experience everyone else’s genuine reactions. I think it’s for the best interest of the thread that things have turned out the way they have.
-
I was already considering switching to HNTR for Ironeagle and I think you may have convinced me :P That said I do remember this mapset when I played it in the DWMC, with it's ups and downs. I doubt many runs will get that far, but the last map is a masterpiece and people should play it :P

The problem is with that anagram is that it has so many letters it is difficult to go anywhere with it. Many names and words are possible, Thomas and Steve are also in there for example, you can even extend Marty to Marty Stratton lol. But in any case, I solved it ;)
-
I wouldn’t assume that this getting a cacoward would lead to a reveal of the ‘true’ author. It could very feasibly be awarded to Veddge. It’s not like there’s a lack of other things to talk about the map :P

I guess this is an example where ignorance really can be bliss. Those familiar with the genre are more likely to have a more subdued reaction than those for who the various spaces are new/unfamiliar.

What's with the maps that pop up monsters in your face
Horus replied to bLUEbYTE's topic in Doom General
Pop-up monsters are just another mechanism to create combat, I don’t think they are inherently good or bad…sure insta pop-up hindsight traps aren’t great, but you can create such a scenario without pop-ups also -
Honestly I'm surprised so many people are interested in the demos...my January Ironeagle demo has almost 150 downloads

Difficulty can be defined in terms of complexity of progression as well as how challenging the combat is

Horus replied to baja blast rd.'s topic in WAD Discussion
Of course, there's nothing wrong with sharing preferences, but it's also worth encouraging people to be the change you want to see in the world. If you see a mod that you think it would be cool to have levels designed around, then why not give it a try yourself? -
This is the main factor that makes me think that this map is by an established person in the community and that Veddge is an alt/old account.
-
There isn’t even agreement in the community on what a slaughter map is, let alone whether they are any good or not
