When I'm running the Rogue Trader tabletop RPG, I'm using Aubrey Hodges PSDoom, Final PSDoom and Doom64 soundtracks whenever the characters explore abandoned high-tech ruins, ghost ships and other dirty ultra-tech mazes (and I'm using Torchlight & Torchlight 2 soundtracks when exploring lush, exotic planets).

Where should I put the iwads on Linux?
soner du replied to forgettable pyromaniac's topic in Doom General
That's what I do, first thing I do after installing a linux is to create a /home/user/WAD directory. And I create one launcher (.sh file) per PWAD I want to play. -
I've put together a package (for Windows) including Blasphemer 0.17, sample PWADs, random WAD generation (SLIGE+dm2conv+BSP) and an old-school GUI. It's called Freethinker : https://osr-vf.itch.io/freethinker It's still a WIP (like Blasphemer itself). Its part of my ROSS (random old-school shooter) project :

I've (somewhat) completed a little personal project : ready-to-play packages containing open-source data (FreeDOOM) and software (Chocolate DOOM), and a selection of classic WADs. Those packages are less than 32MB (unzipped) and include a simple GUI, basically an exe which launches a .BAT menu. There's also a WIP Blasphemer version. URL : https://osr-vf.itch.io/ross or https://sites.google.com/view/ultimate-ross/accueil and https://osr-vf.itch.io/freethinker (WIP Blasphemer) All three packages include : Chocolate Doom / Heretic Random WAD generation thanks to SLIGE + ZenNode (SLIGE + dm2conv + BSP for Blasphemer) First package, "ROSS - ultimate revelation", include : Freedoom1 data + SLIGE maps Two full megaWADs : Switcheroom and Eternal Torture Two shorter WADs : Crusades and UAC_DEAD Second package, "ROSS - inferno earth", include : FreeDOOM2 data + SLIGE maps Two full megaWAD : DemonFear and Zone 300 Two shorter WADs : Null Space and Nostromo's Run Third (WIP) package, "Freethinker - Shade of the Wyrm Tamers" Blasphemer data + SLIGE maps Two full megaWADs : Unbeliever and HUMP mini Two shorter WADs : Valley of Saints and The Crypts

Freethinker is out ! (but still a work-in-progress) https://osr-vf.itch.io/freethinker

I'm not that ambitious ! I'm not using Oblige but SLIGE(+dm2conv) ; I may use Obsidian in the future but Vanilla Heretic WAD generation is not offered for the moment.
-
Hey, I've found a good, original name for the medieval ROSS : FREETHINKER !
-
It's almost finished, I'm still playtesting when I have time... For WADs I've chosen "Unbeliever" and "HUMP mini" for megaWADs (3 episodes each), and "Valley of Saints" and "The Crypts" for single-map WADs. The IWAD is the DM version of Blasphemer (maps not actually played in the ROSS:Schism package). For random WAD generation, I'm using SLIGE (with " -levels 43" options, which actually create 47 levels), then dm2conv (for Doom2 => Heretic conversion, it creates E1M1-9 E2M1-9 E3M1-9 E4M1-9 E5M1-8 E6M1-3 but not E5M9 for some reason, so if you warp to E5M9 it's a DM level), then BSP51 (ZenNode isn't Heretic-compatible). This produces decent (though somewhat unbalanced) 5-episode megaWADs. I hesitate keeping the name "Schism" because I've discovered there's a PWAD already named like that. But the full name is actually "ROSS - Schism of the Wyrm" so I'll probably keep it.

What "other" sourceports do you frequently use?
soner du replied to RataUnderground's topic in Source Ports
I'm running Woof when I just need MBF-compatibility (eg Valiant and Eviternity). I may just use PrBoom+ again, or Eternity, but I dont really need all the options they offer. -
ROSS has been unavailable for a few months.... I had accidentally erased one of the file on the Google Drive it was previously hosted... Now the files are back online, hosted on itch.io, there : https://osr-vf.itch.io/ross (and if you absolutely want to use Google, everything is on https://sites.google.com/view/ultimate-ROSS/accueil) Also, the itch.io downloads are now 100% compatible with the itch.io client ! (.itch.toml manifest files were previously missing) And I'll work again on a third package devoted to Heretic Blasphemer, called "Schism". Everythings looks OK, except the SDL2.dll in the latest chocolate heretic is apparently detected as a virus ? (or something like that)

6 years of Doom sobriety.... what have I missed?
soner du replied to tomatoKetchup's topic in Doom General
By the way, you can also run Eviternity on a fresh source port named Woof : https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Woof! It's an updated WinMBF, more "old school" and lightweight than PrBoom+. -
Currently working on a third package, I'll probably call it "ROSS - Cult of the Wyrm", "Ross - Schism" or something. Based on BLASPHEMER, all-vanilla (SLIGE + dm2conv), some vanilla PWAD (UnBeliever at least...)...

I'm mostly using Win7 for gaming too (for Torchlight 1, Titan Quest, Wrack...). Also to test some windows-only browsers, such as the lovely Opera GX. And for LaTeX publishing, I prefer MikTeX to TeXlive... (I know one can install MikTeX on linux, but I've never tried it) Otherwise, GNU/Linux is perfect for my daily needs : browsing, gaming (Doom, Quake, Steam stuff...), music, etc.
-
My personal computer has GNU/Linux as a primary OS, and Win7 as a secondary OS. I change the linux distro regularily. I was on Debian + Budgie desktop for a bit more than a year, before switching to Bunsenlabs one or two months ago. Very interesting, it was formally called Crunchbang/#!, it's basically Debian+Openbox with well-done configuration tools. Those recent years, I've used Sparkylinux, elementary, MX Linux... More briefly antiX, KDE Neon for a few days... I've also tested funky stuff like Clear Linux (some crazy shit from Intel).

Not from me, but it's a very nice medieval take on Doom, From the "Codex de Simon de Thuillères", a French compilation of fake medival art about modern pop culture. (now being crowdfunded : bit.ly/le-codex )

What are your top 10 most beloved video games?

Doom I* Quake I* Tales of Maj'Eyal NetHack Torchlight I* Eldritch Transcendence Final Fantasy VII HyperRogue Titan Quest * : I also like #II, but still prefer #I -
Chocolate Doom for vanilla WADs (most of the time). Crispy Doom for limit-removing WADs. ZDoom for funkier stuff. Currently testing Woof, maybe my future BOOM/MBF port.

How you discovered the Doom series? / Your first time playing Doom?
soner du replied to DooMBoy's topic in Doom General
I was 21 when I started playing Doom, at the end of 1993. Stopped playing in 1996 (when Duke Nukem cam out), came back in 2009. -
Are there WADS specifically designed for, or especially enjoyable with, nice dog(s) besides the doomguy ? I want to test the Woof source port (a modern "winMBF") ; I've played other MBF-based source ports (PrBoom+) in the past, but very rarely with a dog...
-
The WAD runs perfectly under Woof ! Poor doggy died, burned down by that pesky early boss...
-
I've not updated my packages with the newer Freedom IWADs (from 0.11.3 to 0.12.1) because, for some reason (the newer SKY4 textures ?), the freedoom1.wad is now a few MB bigger. I can not more keep my packages under 32MB unzipped, as advertised... I'll probably update my packages with the full Freedoom IWAD (including the maps, as they're fully vanilla now), and put bigger PWADs compared to the small-sized ones I've included previously (Dmonfear, Zone 300...). I'll try to keep a 64MB limit this time.
