Knee-Deep in KDiZD: Released! It's KDiZD for doom2.exe - 1.7.1 is now on /idgames
jazzmaster9 replied to esselfortium's topic in WAD Releases & Development
GZDoom compatabilty is very much appreciated :D I'm just so used to movement in that that switching to Boom or Vanilla movement will be a bit of an adjustment. I only really use those two ports for vanilla/limit removing testing -
I guess how you feel about ARPGs is how i feel about Turn Based ones. The vast majority of the RPGs i play are ARPGs, with Diablo 2 being the most time i've put into ANY game. for me ARPGS are a great middle ground. The real time gameplay gives real time feedback with controls, damage, movement etc. which I find immersive than stopping every step to pick from a menu, but its also Not as input intensive as a brawler or a hack and slash game where its ALL about the movement and input timing. The real sticking point for me is the looting, exploration and atmosphere, just running a dungeon and the surprise of the items you get.

The worst of it all? These gimmicks Now ... You tell me. Is this conclusion good design? Was it worth it in the end? I do not know. I lean towards no .. But maybe Hugo has a point too. Suck it up princess, as some would say. For me I do hope they a continue with the experimention of different fast pace gameplay styles and combination. I already have the classics for the traditonal FPS, i dont need another one after Doom 1, 2, Final Doom and Doom 64. I didn't like the direction it went with Doom 3 and thats Fine, I decided that it didnt hold my interest and continue with it, people can do the same with 2016 and Eternal. Doesnt mean its bad, it really just wasnt for my liking.

WOAH! congrats on the release. I get relive one of my first custom wads that i've played in a new lens. Can't wait to play this (i.e be added to my already long backlog T_T ) the Original is one of my notGuilty pleasures (I never been guilty for liking anything) so I'm excited to see how this shakes up what Im already familiar with. -
Doom Delta is the closest we got to this. A mapset to go along with it would complete the full Doom Bible experience.

The Dean of Doom series (companion thread)
jazzmaster9 replied to Sunnyfruit's topic in Doom General
I've been seeing a reccuring theme with the recent Dean of Doom episodes and thats "Your favorite wad/that wad everyone likes, Isn't as good as you think it is" and how many people agree with his sentiments. Don't know what to make of it, but thats just something I observed. Player Tastes change over time i guess. Let's see if im around long enough to see the "Going Down and Eviternity are bad actually" takes 10 years down the line from community members. -
Do you have any mapping gimmick trademark?
jazzmaster9 replied to Sonikkumania's topic in Doom General
Starting with Rapidfire 2 onwards, I started incorporating this Doorway-Archway-Thing(i don't know what this is called) into my architecture. Very inspired by BTSX E1's visual design. -
People can debate all they want about their quality, but the very early Tormentor projects like Ultimate Torment and Torture, KDIZD and Stronghold has an influence on ZDoom mappers one way or another other. It especially did for me. they show fully what the Source port was capable of doing both visually and gameplay wise, where it's not restricted to just a Vanilla+ experience with more line and sector limits and line actions. Action, RTC and Ghouls Forest 3, are also very influential in the ZDoom total conversion scene, showing how you can change Doom to what ever you want.

DOOM Eternal Will Have No Microtransactions Creative Director Confirms
jazzmaster9 replied to Enforcer's topic in Doom Eternal
If anything you can have a "i told you so" moment here as well once it happens in 3-5 years. Corporate meddling had ruin something good once again. -

Maps over 10 minutes long and I cant UV max it first try. Very much egotistical and pretentious if you ask me. /s -
What are the most impressive wads you've seen?
jazzmaster9 replied to LargeQT's topic in WAD Discussion
Definitely Heartland, BTSX E1 and E2, Elementalism, Age of Hell, Blade of Agony, Heck even the older ZDoom wads like Ultimate Torment and Torture still impress me even now. -
what are you working on? I wanna see your wads.

Started working on Abysm X: Dance of Blood again after finishing my Operation Orange. Here are some various screenshots of what i've made over the past week. -
how would you feel if AI generated levels reached human-level quality?
jazzmaster9 replied to Majin's topic in Doom General
I would judge it the same way i would any other map. If its fun to play and navigate then I'll like it and will replay it in then future it its not then i wont like it and will move on to the next mapset. There was an idea for a chalice dungeon type Game mode for Abysm 2 where AI generated maps would have been a godsend. -
When UV-or nothing people complain that hard more is Hard and ignoring the Textfile to try HMP First, having UV be a special Edition type deal is what they're pretty much going to get. A Mapper can only take so much before they put matters in their own hand, which is why Abysm 1 and 2 doesnt have a hard more, specifically because people will ignore the intended Normal mode.

The Dean of Doom series (companion thread)
jazzmaster9 replied to Sunnyfruit's topic in Doom General
I will admit that i got very carried away in this thread, in multiple occasions, so apologies. Though I hope this doesn't come across as me hating on MtPain, because I do respect his work a lot and will watch all of the episodes, Day 1, until we make it to Sunlust. I was simply taken aback by the out of left field joke that seems very uncharacteristic of what I expected from the show and reacted negatively despite pretty much agreeing with a lot of the criticism and opinions about E2. -

We'll considering i've been mostly in agreement with the criticsm made in the video, Im not sure what you are on about since this was more a statement about media in general. Come on, we're better than this "yur a fanboy" argument ffs. At some point you gotta roll your eyes when you see people call maps from Eviternity or AA called "souless" -

true, a dedicated thread for that would make an interesting discussion. Another good one is "going through the motions" yes, this map has great fundamentals but since it didn't have anything special it's mediocre. -
Your command of the UDMF Feature set is superb. the final screenshot made some stock textures almost unrecognizable

"overrated", "pretentious", "souless" = I don't like it, but I have to put blame on the creator for utterly failing to entertain me and not my personal taste and preferences. -

Well you won't because no one here is debating about his opinion's on the maps quality. I very much agreed with a fair bit of the criticism in the video and nodded with agreement with the Fair B grade. I did a very brief scan of the thread since the video was posted and I still fail to see how this is about him not liking and criticizing a mapset. The discussion was the very choice words in the end about the team and not his assessment of the maps and the mapset. -

I don't really understand where this is coming from. the mappers involved in the discourse were very respectful and were simply taken aback by the back handed comment. Ribbiks and Tarns simply told their side so i don't know what humility they were lacking. I will never make a 30 minute detailed map ever in my entire life thanks to these arbitrary checklist of "stroking your artistic ego" going around (looks at Abysm 2's overworld map, ooops to late). -

I won't deny there are cases like this. My comment was more pertaining to this mapset in particular. -

Pretty much this. This isn't about "you mad cuz he hates your favorite wad" its the tasteless jab to mappers who, allegedly, are full of themselves. There is a Key difference in "this map overstayed it welcome and end up being too long for me to enjoy" and "if only these designers weren't so full of themselves they could have made a map i enjoy". one is a fair criticism and one is just a low blow. AGAIN no one here is stopping people from not liking BTSX E2, it don't know why anyone thinks this is about criticizing BTSX. -

Personally i just find off putting calling something made for Fun to have Fun as egotistical or pretentious, especially a project that started life as "wow Essel, these texture you made are awsome lets make some maps for these". celebrating your peers hard work and skill through creativity is far from egotistical.
