    Truth

And during those eight minutes, Earth would continue to orbit the non-existant sun, since the speed of gravity is, as far as anyone has been able to measure, the same as the speed of light. I wonder if the instantaneous disappearance of a solar mass of matter would create much in the way of gravitational waves. That would make for a final blaze of glory for LIGO, I suppose.

Doom 30th anniversary book, do you want in?

Since Amazon's print costs are based on the number of pages, regardless of the size of those pages, you could improve these figures significantly by using a larger page format: same amount of content but fewer pages. I see you are using a small page format; going all the way up to A4 size would give the greatest saving in print cost, but it's a little too big a format for most books. A good compromise is 16.99 x 24.41 cm, which is a pleasant format, and the PDF files can quite easily be tweaked to make a hardcover in the 15.6 x 23.39 cm format.

What are your plans for today?

Subzero windchills and ice covering the ground. Good day to stay indoors and get some work done. Having just spent more than two weeks in India, I don't especially need any wild adventures at this point either. Fridge is full of goodies as I had checked the forecast and gone shopping.

    What Was Your Last Purchase?

Yet another coffee grinder. They just keep breaking down. At least Milton (cat) should like this new one, as it is the same make and model (albeit a different colour) as the one he grew up with as a kitten. He hasn't liked the sound make by the later ones, and gave me a dirty look if I started them up when he was nearby. Same-day delivery. So I actually used the same beans that I had put in the old grinder a few hours earlier just before discovering it would grind no more.

Which celestial body would you visit?

If you are thinking of flying a Cessna when you get there, the following might be a useful decision guide. Fun article here.

I once briefly met the second person to say the word "fuck" on national television in the UK.

Taken yesterday at the Jain temple in Ranakpur. In an extremely dark enclave (ISO 5000), so pleased it turned out this well.

Most bizzare save mechanics you encountered in games?

Outcast's Gaamsaav takes some beating. It was an attempt to avoid breaking the immersion, while also extracting a cost to the player: "Outcast uses a unique way to save games, integrated with the game world. At the start of the game, the player receives an object called a “Gaamsaav”. He is instructed that the Gaamsaav is able to “capture his essence”, so that it may later be restored. To save a game, the player equips the Gaamsaav and “squeezes” it, making it glow and emit a sound. The sound can be heard by enemies and they will investigate, so that the player must take the situation into account before saving a game. After a few seconds, the game pauses and a save menu overlay appears."
  11. "I could have cooked pasta and sauce far better than this at home, for a fraction of the cost, and with less aggravation, in much less time than I was sitting around in the crowded lobby waiting for them to show me to a table."

    Crab

As far as I am aware, I invented the idea from scratch when I suggested it in an old forum post here. Barring an extraordinary coincidence you will not find any earlier specifications of it as a category. The intent of my original post was just that there should be no forward or backward movement at all. No other restrictions. So yes, it can be combined with most other categories. SR50 and SL50 tics are fine too, so most "normal" gaps (i.e. ones designed to require only standard running) can be crossed.

    Merry Christmas Doomworld!

I got my wife a telescope. My wife got me... a telescope. Hmm. One time we gave each other the identical card. At least the telescopes are different models (one small and practical; the other has a carrying bag that's like a huge suitcase). We were recently in the Atacama Desert, and realized that my 125x zoom camera just wasn't going to cut it for astronomy (despite doing a nice job on the moon): Jupiter and the four Galilean moons (Io and Europa are close together). But yeah.

    Random Image Thread

This was a real thing, apparently.
  17. This thread appeared just after I had set off on a lengthy road trip through Bolivia. And after that experience I can confirm that it is always possible to pack more panflute into anything. I wonder how midi conversions of this would end up.

Not really Doomy (despite my text input including the word "cyberdemon") and from some other AI image site, but still cute:

Known lost WADs of our history?

I have beta5 (dated 14th January 2007 and presumably the most recent at the time of the Prague LAN in Feb 2007), which had 17 levels. Some years ago Gusta mentioned having about 28 levels around that time. I don't know how accurate that was, but there were probably some that weren't yet at beta stage. 4shockblast: yes, the file I posted was everything PL2-related from the metabolist site you mention. Look inside the files: there is a fullish megawad, a variety of beta versions and resources, and some demos too.

    Ultimate "DeHackEd Creations" thread

Not something I made myself, but this seems an appropriate thing to mention: a collection of deh files by Premysl Vincenzo Jedlicka which can be found at https://web.archive.org/web/20010412175122/http://artax.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~vincenzo/des.cgi?gamesy_e.html+c-e. In case that page becomes unavailable, here is the text from the site and the file (which doesn't contain a txt): dehy.zip

    What Was Your Last Purchase?

A purple iPad Mini. I never particularly intended to become an iZombie, but I needed it to test my company's app, which had run into problems with the latest iOS update. I have to admit that it is quite a nice device though. Otherwise, groceries and stuff, as well as a back cover replacement for my phone, which got a bit cracked recently in Bolivia.

Known lost WADs of our history?

Here is all the original Plutonia 2 stuff I have (as downloaded from metabolist's site in April 2006): plutonia2.zip - whole bunch of versions, and some demos (the demos will play back with the correct wads if they are all extracted and my autoloading patterns are used) plut2.zip - playable wad, made by using the WADINFO.TXT within misc.zip to compile the data from the following two files: levels.zip misc.zip I always felt this project got a raw deal, TBH.

Taken in a park near the planetarium in Bogotá, Colombia.
  25. Scimitar deserves a few demos, I think. Here are a few just to get the ball rolling - scimlmps.zip: Map01: UV Pacifist in 0:16 Map02: UV Pacifist in 0:24 Map03: UV Pacifist in 0:35 Map04: UV Speed in 0:52 Map05: UV Speed in 1:10 Map11: UV Speed in 0:25 Map13: UV Pacifist in 0:16 Map14: UV Pacifist in 0:16 Map15: UV Pacifist in 0:15 Map16: UV Pacifist in 0:15 Map17: UV Pacifist in 0:28 All Boom 2.02 format (recorded with prboom-plus 2.4.7.1test and -complevel 9). Note that there is a dehacked patch included in the wad. If you watch these with Boom 2.02 or Prboom 2.02 you will need to add the deh to your command line. With newer exes, there is no need for that. If you record on this wad, be sure to use the deh, one way or another. AFAIK Boom compatibility is necessary and sufficient. As a naming convention, I propose smxx-xxx (and smxxnxxx, etc.) as the best option, simply because there are so many wads beginning with S.
