I'll be visiting New York City in a little over a week from now. Anyone have any tips for fun things to see or do?
No need to point out the obvious things; I've got plenty of information/guide books and am staying with a friend who knows the city well and has quite an itinerary already drafted out. I'm just thinking of little things like a cool cafe near such-and-such, or little shops full of tech/gadgets/game-related stuff, or some other such "unknown" places that fall under the normal tourist radar.

that is true. six days is not enough to do an exhaustive tour of everything the five borough has to offer. PBS did a great series called "A Walk Through..." each ep featuring a different borough or neighborhood. they give a good look at some of the history, growth and nature of each area. there are links to the program pages here. they just did one on staten island, but I missed it.
Nice link - thanks. Shame on me - I was within walking distance of some sights in Queens that I didn't even get to (I was in Forest Hills).
You probably know this, but Big Onion's walking tours are a good way to see some things that are less on the beaten track; I only did one of their tours (Union Square/Gramercy Park), but was impressed by it. The fact that a number of the people were locals as opposed to tourists was a good sign, I thought.
Since you liked the Jamaica Bay pics, here are a couple more.
