The DooMed Speed Demos Archive returns!

If you use my autoloading patterns, then all older demos will have the right loading of iwad/pwad to avoid desyncs. Newer demos will also work correctly if they use the Prb+ extended format. Even those that don't will probably work since I believe most people nowadays don't record Final Doom demos with -complevel 2.

Recommendations for a good, balanced megawad

I found that Plutonia punished poor movement - in particular a lack of fluent strafing - more severely than other fairly 'tough' wads. For many wads, even very violent ones such as HR, you can fiddle your way through without strafing being a fluent part of your game. When eventually (that is, in 1997, having heard it recommended repeatedly since some time in 1995) I adopted and got used to a standard mouse+WASD control system, Plutonia became far easier and more fun. Phobus: Taken literally, sure, but it contains a large grain of truth (pun intended).

This thread contains some relevant suggestions. Also this one.

Things about Doom you just found out

You can reach it (and even try to "use" it) via a void glide.

Rainbow Bridge, Utah (from the air) Near Navajo Mountain, Utah (also from the air) What I particularly liked about this image is that you can boost the contrast to pretty much any value you like without any colour dominating (try it). It also looks cool in negative form.

    Miscellaneous demos (part 3)

After your previous post, the lack of a txt seems especially odd. Nice job nearly getting the file-name within 8 characters though.

Only PrBoom-plus (not regular PrBoom). Use "-complevel 0" (or choose "Doom v1.2" as the default compatibility level in the in-game menus and then restart, though you'll need to remember to change it back again when you want to play wads that don't require 1.2 behaviour). As far as I am aware, emulation of 1.2 behaviour is as accurate as it can be - no known desyncs in 1.2 demos (though there aren't a vast number to test with). More information here. This wad showcases a 1.2-specific mapping trick (correctly emulated in Prboom-plus with "-complevel 0"), but I am not aware of any wads that make use of it. I don't know of a list of wads that require 1.2 behaviour or that were clearly designed for its specific quirks (if you wanted to research this, I'd suggest looking at DSDA, as those maps that need 1.2 will have "cl0" or "1.2" in the demo exe info - N_A recorded some, for instance). I made use of a 1.2 quirk in my E1M7 demo here, which seemed legitimate as it was the current Doom version at the time the wad was released. There are also some early wads that require Registered Doom 1.9 behaviour (that is, not Ultimate Doom 1.9). The best known are UAC_DEAD.WAD and the original Aliens TC (though modified versions were made to work with later exes). To get Registered Doom 1.9 behaviour in Prboom-plus, use "-complevel 2". I believe the Chocolate-Doom equivalent is "-gameversion 1.9".

MAULHI2 by Jason Franklin UV Pacifist in 0:25 We don't need no stinkin' weapons. We don't need no use of force. Hey marine! Leave that imp alone. All in all it's just another press on the wall. maulp025.zip

  13. Abyssal Speedmapping Sessions: Session 38 by Obsidian et al. Map01 UV Pacifist in 1:15 Rocket suicide exit. The zip includes two fail demos too: one where the rocket damages a revenant, and one where I forget to open the barrier and so just blast myself against it rather pointlessly. 3801p115.zip

Glad you liked it. The Zambezi was very picturesque at sunset too, and baboons and hippos were plentiful. Lions were present on the Zimbabwe side, though we didn't see them. I'd post more sunset/sunrise pics, but this is the random image thread, so here are four unrelated spherecam images: Cape Horn (the cape is centre image - taken from near the lighthouse) Tongariro Crossing Lutsen, Minnesota Cape of Good Hope (the cape is on the far right of the image - taken from near Cape Point, with the lighthouse top left)
