    DOOM 3 woes

Yeah, it would be kinda lame if he looked different - they should make him identical.

Can id make a decent boss?

way too easy? - with a plasma gun, maybe... if you die an then fight him, it's a decent challenge. And the Spider Mastermind without the BFG is very hard, especially on Hey, Not too Rough. (no monsters to get in the cross fire) "'An Arch-Vile with railguns and a rocket launcher!'" - This is a great idea! But make the AV bigger and a little different - arch-viles big brother - and retain his revival capability - maybe revive 3 monsters at once, cause he's so big and bad - and he could still be very fast. something more original would be ideal - but it's so hard to make a good boss with theses advanced game engines - whatever id decides - no stationary bosses please! I mean really! - and no wall textures for a boss - uhhhhh.................. can you say weak?

What I think made Doom's atmosphere great

    Oh, I can't express how much I agree :-)

The music for the new Doom-game.

Robert Prince is the only person who can do Doom music - he did an amazing job with the original - if trent reznor did the music, it surely would be quake-doom - Bobby Prince, please.

    NEW DOOM!!!!!!111

no cyborgs, no traces of quake, quake 2 or any other game! (except doom of course) i don't want to be like hmm... this is kinda like half-life - that would just kill the ever awesome mood of doom! keep the *alone in unknown place* aspect that made doom. No incoming messages: "destroy the reactor at quadrant blah, blah" - this is an easy way to ruin doom. hell: no sign of human design - doom was definately not built by humans, 'cept episode 1. - again - no human type castles or stuff known to humans. As much as I'd love to have the shaved gorilla and the spine chilling roar of le Baron back, mixing old monsters with new ones just isn't gonna work - they've been around for way too, way too, way too loooooooooooooooooong. Keep gameplay simple - the atmosphere of doom requires this and makes up for the lack of less redeeming qualities of complex, deep/rich gameplay - that just aren't doom. I now turn to the scriptures: "And John said, 'doom isn't a cubersome adventure game, but an action-packed slugathon..." [or something like that] "...and doom shall stay the part until the end of time..."

    Dante's Inferno

Gokuma wrote: "...how it would be cool if they really made Hell look like Hell and have mythical or legendary landmarks of Hell." The original DOOM had references to Dante's Inferno. I agree, id should take more from Dante if they do hell in the next DOOM. They could make E3M7 really have the feel that you're in Limbo, with demons in a state of turmoil - running around mad, and be extra aggressive to compensate their behavior (and to exentuate their turmoiled state) - then their AI could change for a different level - to fit whatever specific atmosphere of that level. This would really enhance atmosphere, and really distinguish each level.

    Interview with id

    Another email I sent to JC. The {_} are words I just added, realizing I should have added them in the email: Take more from Dante's Inferno; include some more well suited references into the gameplay: have AI behavior change to suit different levels, for example: E3M7: {Gate to Limbo} should have had Demons that were in a state of turmoil, running around mad, making extra scary/hellish noises ({maybe}eminating bearly audible latin backwards that would just barely come through their grunts) and behaving very aggressive to compensate their undirected behavior and excentuate their turmoiled state. {This would add to the atmosphere. Having monsters behave differently on each level would help distinguish each level as well.}

    Interview with id

As soon as id is ready for an interview - I think everyone can agree this is something than needs to be done! I guess Ling would do the interview? People, please post questions that you think are important and relevent to what id is planning on doing with this new doom. I don't have time right now - but I will post a reply to this with some questions I think should be asked.

DOOM III INFO - PLEASE READ

It is sad: one of the smartest person I've bumped into in these forums, he really was right-on about everything he said, but he's gotta be the biggest loser as well. "Quake series was _not_ bad, it was just different. I personally jumped out of my chair the first time I met the Fiend in Quake" - agreed. Actually, the weapons in DOOM were _somewhat_ tactile -Doom needed a "sniper rifle" type weapon (no scope or anything like that - just like a shotgun but with no spread and not as much power and should use shells), for levels like MAP15, the shotgun just spread too much for long distance shooting. But DOOM shouldn't have too many weapons - I can't really see it having more weapons than it already has. And completely redoing the arsenal wouldn't really work - unless all the "new" weapons were more or less based on the ones from DOOM, but retaing the appropiate feel to the game. id definately still knows how to make a good game, although the "feel" of each game of their games since DOOM were slightly worse than the previous title - buthat's to be expected when you're using up all the good atmospheres: it's hhard to come up with ever better atmospheres from one game to the next, which is one reason id should resume the DOOM atmosphere

DOOM III INFO - PLEASE READ

If you've read my reply - you know then that I did like most of your ideas very much. But Mac10 has made some very good points that everyone should acknowledge, even if he is a FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT! He does *not* have too high expectations - he's right-on about what makes a good game and how we need to get some more intelligent discussions going, which makes it a *real* shame that he is such a fucking dickhead... you're right, personality and ideas/intelligence don't have anything to do with each other.

DOOM III INFO - PLEASE READ

I have to say I agree with everything you've said so far - especially the bit about constructive criticism and dismissing blind posativity - there have been very few well-thought out, intelligent posts and discussions throughout the "new DOOM" forums. (I'm also guilty of some pretty dumb comments) Perhaps you could instigate some good discussions?

DOOM III INFO - PLEASE READ

This is going to be fun... :) First, I agree with recapturing hell in the next DOOM, but not too the extent you have described - it's just too overkill, it would quickly become dull. -Feel - agreed! I don't know about ingame sequences - unless this is done very, extremely, mindblowingly well, it holds the potential to ruin the entire game. Your ingame sequence is very good! - I was picturing E3M4 - this would work great as the intro to DOOM 3 (I can hear the the oiginal DOOM intro music as the Baron turns around and reveals his ever familiar self - "I'm back!" - but I wouldn't want it as an ingame sequence - I don't like the idea of ingame sequences - one of the reasons DOOM was so great because it gave you just enough information for imagination to fully embelish in your head Phobos and Diemos (thanks again Myk, for this great point) and the rest of the story setting the scene for when you enter E1M1. I agree with fear factor (I think it was more prevalent in Quake - damn Fiends scared the bejeezus out of me!) And, yep, I have (running around with pistol) on E3M7! ;) Boy, you and I must be sharing the same brain waves - 100% agreement w/that whole monster paragraph. No, really, we are - again, right on w/ "-perfect shooting amounts" ... -um, and again - monsters too tough - need fix... Yep - monsters dying *SUCK* in quake and beyond. (if they dont keep the TWO shotguns, more than one person's house will be getting bombed) ;) Grenade launcher would have been great in DOOM! - agreed about not overdone plasma rifle. Yep, I made the same suggestion about sniper rifle. I'd like to go on but can't - my finger got banged today and is out of service.

    Interview with id

'Hope so, I emailed him two days ago with what I think are two of the more pressing questions - this was probably futile, but I just couldn't resist... :) this e-mail may have been a little pretentious... "Your busy. I'll try to keep it brief. I don't know if you guys at id frequent any of the DOOM newsgroups or www.doomworld.com to see what us fans have to say in response to the late breaking news, but one common concern is whether it's going to be unmistakably DOOM or will it basically be a new game with the same name. What does the statement "a new DOOM" actually mean? It's one thing to make a sequal with the same game engine (DOOM 2), but how is this going to work with your upcoming "uber"-engine? The question I really want answered, though, is what was your, and others' at id, motivation to making a new DOOM? An opportunity to realize your original vision of what you wanted the game to be, but couldn't because of the limitations at the time? Surely you can at least answer the latter of the two questions :)"

    AI fit for Cartoon FPS

Yeah, I wasn't really serious about the running off... i was in a humorous mood when I was writing this post (hence the bugs bunny comment) - but it might go well in the MDK series.

    AI fit for Cartoon FPS

Would be hard to make it work in doom, but it's a cool idea anyway: have the AI react differently to different weapons - if you're toting a pistol - the imp or whatever would act very aggressive and lunge out at you without the slightest apprehension, but if you were to quickly switch to the BFG he'd suddenly get scared shitless and go running off. And if you had a shotgun, he'd approach you more tentatively - this would be his behavior when he's alone. If he is accompanied by another imp, or a higher enemy, then his, and his companion's, AI would calculate that and they would behave appropriately. This sort of AI really would give the sense that the enemy has a mind of its own - that it is truly intelligent - an imp would almost be reminscent of a monkey - same IQ :) I like making predictions: Someone will make a cartoon FPS -maybe Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd, where you're Elmer Fudd - around 12 years from now - and it'll be a hit.

    Question

Umm... supported - I meant if it is not supported.
  18. Hellbent

    Question

Multiplayer will undoubtedly be unsupported - and if, for some maniacal reason id were to not provide support, someone in the DOOM community soon would (if they weren't so appalled at the lack of multiplayer support- but since this isn't an issue, I'm wasting my carpel tunnel syndrome tollerance)

    Keyboard control anyone?

I basically agree with everything you said. I too used to like using the keyboard, but at one point I finally decided to give the mouse ago - since in the manual it says "once you get good, use the mouse in combination with the keyboard", so I finally got used to it and glad I did! The mouse with freelook is one of the greatest control enhancements. running while looking around while strafing while firing then spinning around in a instant - this is the ultimate. Trust me, learn to move with the mouse and strafe with the keyboard. Here's my setup: Right hand (assuming you're right handed) controls the mouse: left button fires, right walks forward. Left hand: Ring finger on the S key to strafe left, middle finger moves player backward and index finger on C, (or F) strafes right. Thumb opens doors on spacebar. If you don't have always run on, then your pinky can run with the letter A. And then, moving the mouse forward looks down and moving it backward looks up and side to side looks right and left. BTW, I prefer reversed mouse - I suggest you find a setup that works for you or try mine until you get comfortable - you'll be glad you did :)

    Interview with id

I don't understand why no one is posting replies to this topic! Doesn't everyone want to know what direction this game is going in? Or am I missing something, like an interview with id just isn't going to happen... what, what is it - I just don't understand.

    Wad support in DoomIII

That's a dumb argument, because, well, so what? Plus, you'd then be able to edit those levels that you once thought were so cool and really make them cool - it would make for great "bases" to start from.

    Weapon movement

    weapons with range :)
  23. Hellbent

    Weapon movement

I just had a thought - thanks to the swing chainsaw post. But it raises immediate problems. Separate movement for the weapon. you could aim your weapon all around independenly of the mouse look - although implementing this and keeping the gameplay simple will be tough. I guess the chainsaw would have to swing automatically or be randomly generated some how.

The Dream of a new DooM

I don't think mixing games is a good idea - the game's identy will be weak and a cohesive atmoshpere/feel that was in the original will be non-existent. Any elements to be borrowed from other games should only be borrowed from the original - keep the game original or like DOOM, but don't borrow from halflife and quake 2 making a rehashed hybrid! Gotta be DOOM or a "logical" evolution/progression from the original DOOM - keep the "your the last marine against the hordes of hell"

    Scary!

Good points - I totally agree with everything you said.
