  1. I think disabling extended HUD on first playthroughs is a good move. Even as someone who doesn't care about 100% it also removes any preconceptions you might have about a map when you first start it, which I think is a good thing. If nothing else it adds to the sense of mystery, but on top of that it also makes me think about a map I've been tinkering with for a set recently. I think it'll end up with a fairly hefty monster count (probably 500+), and I fear that if it gets released, when people see that monster count some will immediately start crying about slaughtermaps or gargantuan adventures and then quit the game or something... I don't want that because it's not really either of those things :/
  2. Make maps for yourself, not other people! I understand the sentiment in the OP, however... stewboy, I think it's fair to say your music was pretty divisive once upon a time. It always seemed to me that your generally mellower style always got the brunt of the pushback against the wave of "non-Doomy music" that started to crop up around the start of the last decade - we all remember the "gay mexican soap opera" comment about BTSX E2 right? You (fortunately) didn't really change your approach to writing music to appease the people who just want metal all the time, so why do the same for maps?

    Favorite Dobu map?

Have to say this is a fantastic idea for a thread and I hope we see more like it! dobu is one of my favourite mappers and I think the first time I played his edits to Transduction was when that was cemented for me. It's worth remembering that Transduction was a fairly ordinary map in its earlier stages, one of many that got booted from TNT2 back in 2014. The TNT:R founders definitely deserve some kudos for getting the ball rolling on turning it into more of a horror map, but iirc the Wormhole homage was just kinda there and not really symbolic of anything... I was absolutely blown away when I saw what dobu had done with that section and everything past it. Like Transduction, I can't really talk about The Given without some degree of bias, but that was another definitive 'holy shit' moment. Yes, I agree, although it's known for being the monsterless puzzle map from that top 100 list, I don't think that's really the point. The Given is a story. The scale is immense, the castle, the town, the wizard's towers, the mines, the sawmill, the graveyard - it's a world that really feels like it is/was lived in. There's even a lengthy prologue story embedded in the WAD which can be found when you open it in SLADE. This WAD is a masterpiece. I hope the wizards got their own turn on the guillotine. Fuckers. Lastly, I'm gonna be a bastard and name a map that isn't out yet: Beloved Asphyxia, from Panophobia. All I'll say about this is that claustrophobia as the central theme of a Doom map is something that could so easily backfire horribly. Beloved Asphyxia does not backfire. I think the people who liked the suspenseful atmosphere of Transduction will also find a lot to love in this map too, and I hope one day you all can experience it for yourselves.

DoomWiki Month in Review (Issue #45)

Yes, 150 or so down, only another 6000 to go... I was trying to get into a routine of spending like 15-30 minutes a day on it, which should gradually whittle the list down, I'll see if I can pick that back up again
  8. 32in24-14 MAP16 UV speed/pacifist in 0:27 (complevel 9). Could be improved upon I think. Also I apologise for the bad naming convention, but couldn't think of anything neater 3i214-16-27.zip

    Favorite soundfont?

I thought the voice limit for the Microsoft synth was 32. Don't forget voices on higher-numbered channels are first in line to be cut off so put less important stuff like subtle delays on those and keep the important things like melody, bass on the lower-numbered channels and then you can probably get away with more intricate arrangements, but to be honest I've stopped caring about it seeing as modern Doom ports don't seem to use the MS synth itself by default and instead use things like Fluidsynth with a soundfont emulating the MS synth without the polyphony issues. Not hugely keen on soundfonts personally. There's a lot of uploads of Doom WAD soundtracks on Youtube that use various soundfonts, such as on this channel. As a composer I genuinely do find it interesting how my MIDIs are handled by each soundfont, despite how badly some of them turn out, but for me they're never better than the Microsoft synth originals.

    The DWmegawad Club plays: Uprising

Hello, just looking in on this thread - I don't know this WAD but seems like all the maps are by Cheesewheel. I didn't work on this, the map is just using my music!

What are some WADs that deserve a new MIDI Pack?

not Hell Revealed, and definitely not Going Down which was a popular suggestion last time we had a thread like this iirc. Out of the big names that are left, I could see a pack for Scythe 1. Maybe D2TWID too.
  17. Congratulations on the release! Looking forward to giving this a listen, that is one hell of a line-up in that tracklist, no doubt, and a very welcome surprise to see Knightrider of Doom contributing! Also...

The 2021 Cacowards Thread Sidebar [Split]

Honestly the Plutonia MIDI Pack didn't even get that much attention when it released, its popularity is something that only came along years later. The more recent packs have actually fared much better, Cacowards mention or not.
  19. Heya! Many years ago I had one of these threads, but it was in the blogs forum, and I'd stopped updating it way back and now it's not exactly easy to find anyway because blogs in its original form is long gone. So more recently my MIDI repository has been an obscure Google Drive link that I quietly update every once in a while, which doesn't really make much sense thinking about it, so I figured I'd make a new thread for this stuff. So, if you don't know me, I've been writing MIDIs since 2013, I've worked on projects such as the Plutonia, Revolution! and Rebirth MIDI Packs, TNT: Revilution, and Eviternity. I've slowed down a lot on MIDIs over the last couple of years due to a greater focus on expanding beyond the general MIDI box and university studies, but I'm hoping to start getting considerably more MIDI work done this year. The zip contains all of my publicly released MIDI work - but I've withheld stuff composed for WADs that aren't out yet. Feel free to use any of these, providing credit is given (please use my real name 'Tristan Clark' when crediting me!). Enjoy! :) Zip folder of all MIDIs Last updated: 3 July 2022, 64 MIDIs Full MIDI listing

    Tristan MIDIs [updated 28-Mar-24]

Small update, nothing notable but just doing a bit of rebranding and housekeeping - the ZIP is now on Dropbox and is slightly restructured, Doom projects now in their own subfolder. I've also thrown in the original version of Blood Rush that was included with the Plutonia MIDI Pack and marked the other one as an extended edit. I'm hoping I can pick up the pace with music in general again next year, 2021 has sucked big time x_x
