    Hexecution [Hexen DM]

no way to address the balancement issue by tweaking the layouts accordingly, instead?
  2. this is a one liner to add the drdteam repository for debian and debian-based distros and install doomseeker + odamex + zandronum. su -c "echo 'deb http://debian.drdteam.org/ stable multiverse' >> /etc/apt/sources.list && wget -O - http://debian.drdteam.org/drdteam.gpg | apt-key add - && apt-get update && apt-get install doomseeker doomseeker-odamex odamex zandronum" copy the wad files inside .doomseeker (it is hidden in your home directory). if doomseeker ask for odamex's path, it is /usr/games/odamex for debian jessie users: if you want to install zdoom, you will need to install libjpeg8 from the testing repository. i dont know how to write a script to check which archtecture you use at the moment, so you will have to install it manually with dpkg -i <package name> these are the pages where you can download the package AMD64 - https://packages.debian.org/testing/amd64/libjpeg8/download i386 - https://packages.debian.org/testing/i386/libjpeg8/download direct links to the package AMD64 - http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libj/libjpeg8/libjpeg8_8d1-2_amd64.deb i386 - http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libj/libjpeg8/libjpeg8_8d1-2_i386.deb and do this, so you dont have to copy the wad files to .config/zdoom echo '[IWADSearch.Directories]' > $home/.config/zdoom/zdoom.ini echo 'path=~/.doomseeker/' >> $home/.config/zdoom/zdoom.ini
  3. Alright, there are things the needs to be said and applies to, possibly, every DM project that comes from this forum. #1 - Give a serious attempt at improving your skills for AT LEAST one week. #2 - Try to learn why the competitive community loves old maps such as ssl2, judas23_, a couple of lazarus and greenwar maps. While d5m1 is a popular map, too, it is not a very good example of a fun map. You will notice that most of them are pretty ACTION INTENSIVE, FAST, but not TOO fast (well ssl2 might be too fast, whatever). The latest DM project Doomkid finished has a few good examples, too, so it is not only the old maps. #3 - Learn when a specific weapon is at its brightest and when it is absolutely useless. Keep in mind that the autoaim loses effect when the enemy is out of your reach (think of a 1024 radius). #4 - If you think that a spawn holds too much disadvantage, place an appropriate weapon next to it, let the items and weapons address the necessary balancements. #5 - The above is a hint that symmetrical maps are a big no-no, but that depends on the game mode too. #6 - If you want to create a map that fits both for duel and FFAs, keep the rooms bigger, avoid too much map complexity (see omgmaps.wad for a REALLY BAD example). I think this is a good policy because most public FFAs starts with a duel, so keep that in mind I guess. If you manage to pull this sucessfully, it is probably going to be one of the most played FFA map packs and bring the revival of FFA. #7 - The player has to use something to cover himself with, Doom is not all about dodging, remember about what is written in #1. Make sure that the covers allows witty moves to fool the other player, this adds a lot to the fun and makes every match quite different. Add fast lifts to trap the other player or to lift yourself immediately after a shot. #8 - BFG9000 and super shotgun are NOT OP, unless there is no cover, see #7. #9 - Do not add computers in the mid of a forest, unless there it is inside a base in the mid of a forest. No need to be realistic, but dont pull non-sense design choices like that. #10 - The rest is beauty, which I dont demand too much from maps, since that maps that looks nice and plays well are really fucking rare, but gameplay comes first.

My Top 10 First Person Shooters

2 ways to beat xaero 1 - total offensive (kill him before he gets the railgun) 2 - total defensive (lure him close to you and use the rocket launcher) there is a third way but it is a bug in the AI

    Eternity Engine 3.40.46 Bifrost

is the odamex multiplayer code portable enough to be "added" in eternity without much labor? both ports seems to have the same base.
  8. whatever you say, shotgun is better for medium-long range and has a horizontal pattern, unlike the super shotgun, so learn to use it.

    DOS Programming - Advice?

As an alternative, you could try to install linux in such old systems, but it will take a long while until you come up with a system that does not rape the RAM. Without the graphical interface, of course. The advantage being that whatever you create, will be usable for everyone using linux, too.

    master levels coop support

I played with the odamex server cfg files once and came up with a vanilla server configuration that includes the entire vanilla maplist (order: doom, doom2, master levels, no rest for the living, tnt and plutonia). In case you are interested: http://pastebin.com/raw/phkEvPUQ and use it as follows (don't forget to set the waddirs variable, I don't remember the reason but whatever) odasrv -config <cfg name> I compiled the last client revision (at the time of writing) here, it eliminates weapon bobbing oddities: https://mega.nz/#F!YkYX1LBZ

Unofficial patch for Doom, Doom II and Final Doom?

Multiplayer source-ports does integrity checks on your IWAD, if it differs from the originals, it will refuse to connect. There are other variables but I am too lazy to go through all of them.
  12. The first post needs an index. Use a prefix for the titles to ease the search. Sample: # TUTORIAL: How to play DOOM online (Co-operative, Deathmatch, CTF and much more) - Setting up your DOOM Browser - FOR ZDOOM USERS - FOR DOSBOX USERS - FOR CHOCOLATE DOOM USERS - FOR SPLITSCREEN PLAYERS It helps if you fragment the guide into smaller (but relevant) parts. Thank you for bringing this section to reality.

vader's fleshspawn as new lost soul?

hmm what comes to mind are glowing "mini volcanoes" around the monster and a glowing mouth (a very pale green). i also thought it could have smoke coming out of these "volcanoes", you decide if this is a good idea or not.

vader's fleshspawn as new lost soul?

reminder that lost soul sprites are full bright. it will be weird to look at a big meat ball in the dark.
  15. Deus vult 2 and sunder.wad should be worth a look, they have great aesthetics, but requires doom2. http://doomedsda.us/lmps/1193/sunder.zip http://doomedsda.us/lmps/983/dvii-1i.zip

    Less gruesome/more sci-fi-ish decorations?

Of course you can, but there is a difference between trying to dictate what they should do and providing them feedback based on their current work. One gives the artist suggestions on what to improve (in their skill), the other doesn't.

    Less gruesome/more sci-fi-ish decorations?

Let the artists have their freedom for creation, as they seem to work better that way.

    We need convenience

Odamex seems to be the port of choice. I recommend a testing session on the build below (revision 5426, reports as 5420), since it records vanilla demos properly and does not have weird weapon bobbing glitches, and it is network compatible with the current Odamex release. https://mega.nz/#F!E0JSHC7Y!oHDdNtYjvGgB-Nlatg1frg We should decide which install script we should work upon, although I did one script, it does not obey the current github directory structure, as you can see here: https://github.com/freedoom/freedoom/issues/110#issuecomment-139375658 These are some annoying bugs affecting the latest builds, keep an eye on them, I guess. http://odamex.net/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=1148 http://odamex.net/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=1150 To help boost Freedoom's popularity (a little), we need to make things convenient for the newcomers, and that means supplying a package with a selection of source-ports. I know I know, freedom, impartiality and all that stuff, an insignificant number of people cares. The newcomers wants to download and play right away. So I suggest the following: we bundle Freedoom with (with no folder hierarchy) * Doom Explorer (we use -appdir command for portability) * ZDaemon * Zandronum * Odamex and add a link to download the pack on the main site. We should not expect the source-port developers to get in sync with our release cycle, nor should they adapt to ours, or even the naming convention. (uploading the bundle)

    We need convenience

Nevermind, the latest revision (5426, reports as 5420) seems fine when compiled using TDM-GCC 5.1.0-2 (didn't try the latest version yet). This is a 32 bits build, test it if you will. https://mega.nz/#F!E0JSHC7Y!oHDdNtYjvGgB-Nlatg1frg

  23. Is there any netquake port that allows one to align one's view straight to the ground and sky (pointing directly to the nadir or zenyth https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zenith )?

    Quake 1 full freelook

Now that is better. Thank you for your efforts for trying to help out. I thought that the "full" statement would highlight what I was talking about. About the "higher" range, I just feel it is annoying, and I don't really seek for full vanilla gameplay. Sorry for misbehaving with you, through this thread. I will try to be clearer in the next time.
