Osiris did not flee. Eyes fixed on the beast, he reached for a bundle hanging at his waist, and from it he fished an elegantly crafted mask of black wood, gilded along the eyes and the beard. "What say you?", he murmurred. "Is this just a dumb beast, or do I need to be wary of strange magicks?" The lips of the mask moved. "I sense no taint about this fellow. He's not a construct of Seth." "Hrmph. Then this battle will hardly be an exercise," Osiris replied, half disappointed, as he reached for his holy weapons. With a howl, the beast launched itself off the ground. It flew towards Osiris, swift as a thrown javelin...

Satanic Infestation Open IWAD Project (CURRENT VERSION v0.0.5)
Havoc Crow replied to sergeirocks100's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Frankly, it still looks bad. Huge tracts of unvarying bare walls, huge empty rooms, barely any lighting variation, ugly texture clashes. Just adding some stairs to the ceiling isn't really enough. I honestly suggest you slow down with the mapping, and instead take the time to play some popular maps to study what, exactly, makes their visuals so good. -
Satanic Infestation Open IWAD Project (CURRENT VERSION v0.0.5)
Havoc Crow replied to sergeirocks100's topic in WAD Releases & Development
I am sorry, Sergei, but at this point it's obvious that your art and mapping skills are nowhere near the level needed to satisfactorily complete an ambitious project like this. Your map screenshots look very amateurish and uninteresting, and your art is barely above MS Paint level. All legal issues aside, I say you put this project away for at least a year or so, while you work on improving your skills. -

Do young people still play old DOS/early Windows games from 90s?
Havoc Crow replied to Hisymak's topic in Everything Else
My younger brother is 12, and likes to play Doom from time to time (IIRC he played it since he was about 8 or so). He's also been a long-time fan of Half-Life, including the old 1998 games. As for my less younger brother, a few years ago (when he was 18 or so) he was quite a bit into old Apogee platform games. If anything, I have a feeling that today's young generation is a lot more likely to be into old games than before; I don't remember the last time I've heard any kid say "wow, the graphics on this old game suck!" or something like that. Perhaps this can be attributed to the rise of digital distribution (which makes titles from across all of gaming history available at the tip of one's fingers), and to the never-ending wave of retro-styled indie games such as Undertale or Hotline Miami, which make the younger generation comfortably familiar with the visuals of old games. -
Had a dream that I made a Doom level, set in an Egyptian-themed fortress in hell. The map contained a pit from which a horde of undead severed hands (as in, the Choking Hands from "Blood") would come crawling out; there was also a narrow tower with a triangular tip, from which you could straferun into a secret location if you aimed exactly in the right direction.

What was the first Doom source port you have used?
Havoc Crow replied to Lizardcommando's topic in Doom General
Frankly, I don't remember. The very earliest version of Doom I played was the original DOS executable. Later on I got into playing Doom mods, and I recall playing "Tei Tenga" and "Adventures of Massmouth" on ZDoom, "Covert Ops" on EDGE, and the "WolfenDoom" mods on Doom Legacy (remember that?). So, I'm guessing it's one of these three. -
I don't have any particular system, although I typically try to use as few saves as possible, and only save if something ahead seems really dangerous (say, if a Cyberdemon suddenly pops up). However, if I realize that a particular map is very difficult (Sunder...), I typically go "oh, screw it" and start saving everywhere like crazy.

I think I've seen this guy somewhere... He's from Halo, right?

A copy of Doom II that my father got somewhere. It was a pre-1.9 version, so it had stuff like openable silver bars in the second room of MAP02, or a stuck Arachnotron on MAP11 (I remember being confused by these changes years later when I played a v1.9 copy.)

For some reason, I was sure for many years that E1M1 starts with you facing a dead Sergeant. Then, one day, I realized it's actually a gibbed marine.

Doomworld's reactspheres: share your interpretation(s)!
Havoc Crow replied to taufan99's topic in Doom General
Soulsphere: A general "like" Megasphere: A particularly excellent post, with a lot of effort put into it (typically reserved for things like essays, technical explanations etc.) Invisibility: Hilariously stupid posts. (As in, the poster would presumably want to turn "invisible" out of shame.) Invincibility: Posts which are, for whatever reason, historically important... but it wouldn't be proper to "like" them. For example, the announcement of a prominent community member's death. -

I honestly don't know if this will help, or if I have even understood your problem correctly, but there's one thing that helped me get past my creative anxieties recently. I used to feel overwhelmed by any problem that wasn't trivial. Whether writing a science paper, or making a Doom map, or writing a story or whatever. I'd go in and then five minutes later I'd be like, "Oooh, I have no idea where even to begin! All my ideas suck!" I learned to get past that by trusting my brain. That is, I tell myself: "Yeah, I have no idea what to do now, but if I focus on this long enough, I am sure to come up with something good. My first attempt is going to suck, my second attempt won't be much better, and that's perfectly normal. That's what my brain needs to get revved up. Once it does get revved up, it will come up with something good." Another thing I've noticed is that I seem to think better away from the computer. I often struggle to come up with something creative while I'm sitting down at the PC, but once I go for a walk or sit on the bed with nothing but a few blank papers and a pen to jot down my thoughts, something seems to get unlocked in my head. Finally, two principles that help me get past my blockades: don't be afraid to brainstorm (that is, give a chance to any idea, even those which seem dumb from the outset); and don't get stuck in a single rut of thinking (e.g. if you're trying to design the monster encounters in a certain area in your map, and nothing seems to work satisfactorily, maybe step back and think if you can't remake this area completely. Maybe you're working from the assumption that a certain wall has to be there, because it's been there since the start of the mapping process, but what if you removed it? Maybe you've already decided that a certain area has to be an underground maze, because that's how you originally conceived it, but what if it was an outdoors arena instead? What if the player start was somewhere else entirely than you originally planned?) I've typed this all out in a rush so it may come across as rambling, but hopefully it may help someone.

The DWIronman League survives: No Sleep for the Dead
Havoc Crow replied to NaZa's topic in WAD Discussion
https://www.mediafire.com/file/7axxihjqfhvxx2o/DWIronman_nos4dead_JudgeDeadd-1.lmp/file Sweet save at the end of E1M9. Unfortunately I died on E1M8 to the big guy. I tried camping in the door, but ran out of patience when he just plain refused to show his ugly mug. I risked running for the BFG, and then... it turned out there was less room to maneuver than I had hoped. Category 1 -
Burnout Paradise. I got it for free in a bundle, and fired it up not expecting much, since I'm not a racing game fan. To my surprise it was fantastic, and now ranks as one of my favorite games of all time. Mostly because of its open-world gameplay that gives it an escapist feeling.

Scary enemies in nostalgic games that made you quit the game
Havoc Crow replied to unerxai's topic in Everything Else
Much like the OP, I also used to be terrified of Doom's Demons. There was something about their strange, hunched-over silhouette and unnatural speed that scared the heck out of me. On the occasions where I loaded up a Doom map, I hoped it would contain no Demons. As for an enemy that really made me quit a game: the ghosts from the dungeons in Elvira II. Here you are in this dark corridor, and suddenly a magic trap roots you to the spot and you can only watch helplessly as ghosts suddenly fly out of the screen at you: https://youtu.be/Gd-cJUuU5mo?t=318 The first time this happened to me, I 'nope'd out of the game and didn't really feel like playing it afterwards... -

What was your first exposure to doom, (not via the shareware doom game)
Havoc Crow replied to SlayerOGames666's topic in Doom General
My earliest contact with Doom I can recall was when my uncle brought my father a disk with a pirated version of Doom 2 (and a sheet with the IDDQD, IDKFA, IDCLIP cheat codes). I was short-sighted and didn't have glasses yet, so I couldn't really make out what was happening on the screen, but I still enjoyed watching my father play and I tried to make sense of what I was seeing. (I thought the BFG was a door-opening device because my father usually had it out when opening any door)
