Wow, where does the time go?
Doom III wasn't a bad game, really. I never did find myself warming up to some of the monster designs, but as a linear journey the game is quite nicely paced and plotted. Certainly lacks the replay value of all of the others (including 2016), to say the least, but as a sort of haunted house + rail shooter it's better made than most comparable contemporary titles I can think of.
I eventually got the rerelease/BFG edition for some reason (completionism/curiosity, I suppose), and I felt that most of the changes made in that version were not for the better. Doom III was never going to be the kind of nonstop arcade-y blastathon that modern marketing/journalism likes to paint the original game as, and most of the usability enhancements and aesthetic repinnings detracted from the main thing the original game had going for it, that being the atmosphere/ambience. Ah, well, that's revisionism for you, I suppose.
