  1. You know what time it is... time to mention all those cool releases you've played this year! 2021 was hella stacked, so bring it on for 2022! For those unfamiliar with the "nomination" process, here are some tips... If you play (or hear, or see) something you find particularly fun, beautiful, clever, or mind blowing... mention it! Post the name and author of a project and a link to its download. This thread is merely a place to mention outstanding works of Doom. Keep conversations about projects to a minimum, please! Winners are not chosen by the number of "likes" or the amount of times the project is "nominated" - Judges use the thread to find projects worth playing and decide winners based on personal preferences. Please do not nominate your own project. At the end of each year, there's a grace period to ensure that all releases get fair consideration. In other words, everything released from about mid-November 2021 onwards is up for consideration for the 2022 Cacowards. Happy Dooming!

    honestly all that should be avoided. we play Doom to have fun, not get hit over the head with IRL shit. edit: to clarify, use common sense. if you think it'll cause a problem, don't upload it.

  5. As the year draws to a close, I've been reflecting on things I've done this year as a mapper and what things I want to learn and improve on, try out, or projects I want to finish. Most recently I combined two of my lifetime mapping goals- making a deathmatch map and using only Ancient Aliens textures on a map. It was a fun experience and I learned a lot! I have some other goals, including: Learning ZScript Learning modeling/spriting Finishing Dancing in the Abyss Make a MIDI (or collab with an awesome artist like Jimmy or Tristan Clark or Dragonfly) Collab with Bridgeburner, my mentor Make a Boom map that fully uses Boom features, instead of a weird vanilla map that just has more visplanes Make some more proper vanilla maps So, what's on your mapping bucket list? It can be something as small as learning a new technique or using a new texture pack, or something as big as starting or completing a project.

    try doing map MAP01 lookup "Gaze" you may also want to define the levelnumber in the body of your mapinfo, for example under your Sky1 definition write: levelnum = 1

    Doom Eternal, 2nd anniversary.

    I like the game itself, its gameplay loops are fun, but I've had way more technical issues with it than when it first launched. Had to start by upgrading the graphics card after TAG1's release since the game decided to eat up ALL the VRAM (I was playing on a 1060 before), plus this last session I played I had the game just hard-crash to desktop randomly and the Gladiator fight bugged out- the health bar would not go down even if I staggered the dude with a rocket, and ate up a bunch of my lives. Dunno what Bethesda/id's been doing with the game recently but it's become much less fun to play with those issues, unfortunately. It sucks because I genuinely adored the game at launch.

    I guess the question now lies in whether or not we should restrict to intended ports when playing maps- I personally feel hamstringed playing on anything but GZDoom but I can appreciate that it can become a major pain in the ass to deal with situations like this- obviously it isn't my call but if the GZDoom compat settings aren't robust enough to fully imitate older source port monster behavior by way of kill counting then I wonder if it may be worth streamlining to intended port. or maybe just have everyone play on DSDA Doom (which I've tried and found was pretty decent).
  14. it's not that serious bro, if that's what you want to do, no one's stopping you! some people just want to have fun making videos and don't want to do research, and that can and should be acceptable. also keep in mind not everyone does this as a full time thing- many of these content creators are working jobs on top of making videos so by the time they do a well-researched video with all the edits it may be way longer to sink effort into than a lightly edited gameplay vid. keep in mind most people do not get paid by YT since adpocolypse, money isn't everything but it does provide income to help with improving videos.

Hi, former DoomTuber here :) Honestly, the only time I'd understand getting upset over how someone plays a mod/map is if they play in a way that intentionally breaks it (i.e. with noclip or jumping (hi, past me)). Or if you're presenting information, not getting something right that's easily disprovable (i.e. exists in a wiki or otherwise is easily Google-able). Sometimes people get things wrong though and I tend to be patient, just leave a comment to correct or otherwise inform the person if it's not a common pattern of behavior from their videos. As jerry said further up, ignorance is not a moral failing, persay, obviously there's limits to that if the behavior continues but someone getting something wrong the first time is how they learn that they were wrong. As far as opinion pieces such as "E1 is best" or "you should only play with BD" or so on- that's just that, an opinion, and you can agree or disagree to your heart's content. Much of what is discussed about Doom that isn't strictly about its code or other program data is subjective and people do need to remember that. If you find you don't gel with a YouTuber because of their subjective opinions, I suggest unsubscribing or otherwise consuming their content less. We could all argue until the end of time about whether or not The Chasm sucks or whatever but no one has the correct opinion on it because there's no right answer, I tend to find those types of arguments futile in the best of circumstances, arguing about it in YouTube comments is even less appealing. Unfortunately there are going to be people on YouTube who have uninformed or misguided or otherwise weirdly framed arguments for what they believe about the game. That's just the side effect of YouTube, it's a free service anyone can use, and really the biggest thing to learn is to filter what you digest if it causes you a lot of distress. I'm not saying never listen to an opinion that is different from yours (otherwise I'd still be using texture filtering to this day) but a lot of unnecessary stress can be avoided by not continuing to torture yourself with videos from people you don't like. There's a giant, enormous world of media out there that can be consumed, find what you like and roll with that. I find it super counterproductive to just constantly bitch about creators who don't play the way you like them to play or have a subjective opinion that is different than yours, there's a bunch of DoomTubers on the internet, just go find a different one that you do like. I guess to close this out and to answer act's original post, GZDoom is: a port that runs pretty much everything, with the exception of maps made specifically for certain ports, faithfulness to original intent aside (which I get, but it's a big w/e if it's just single player non-speedrun play, be happy they're out here experiencing the map at all). it streamlines the process for people who have to spend time not just recording, but editing their videos. struggling for a while to get a certain port to work right can be frustrating so if someone finds something that works for them then they'll stick with it. can also be a matter of hard drive space. GZDoom is really only now picking up as a game engine, rather than something that plays modern maps. believe me, this grinds my gears but it's how source ports as a whole have always been viewed. Having Doom in the name doesn't help this as the name simply suggests that it runs Doom instead of new games, at least from an non-mapper/modder perspective. it's also legal distinction- a full game using an engine, technically speaking, means no assets from other games. texture filtering/dynlights/smoothdoom- a subjective (and sometimes, performance) thing. I'll cringe if someone plays my maps without dynlights but if it means they can play at 30 instead of 10 FPS and actually complete it, then go for it. that's their prerogative. TLDR unless someone is saying that original Doom was made in like the 1970s or something stupid like that, be nice or find something else to watch.

    a WAD is fine, I just needed to know the method in which you were adding them to better answer your question. make sure that your DECORATE/MAPINFO/SNDINFO text files are at the top of the WAD structure and that your sprites are between SS_START and SS_END flags. otherwise as long as you define the DoomEd num in Mapinfo you should be okay- the only thing I can further suggest is removing the spaces before and after the "=" in the DoomEdNums definitions.

    are you just using a simple WAD format or a PK3? if using PK3, are you using Actors?

    you need to put the assigned DoomEd numbers behind each actor name. for example: ACTOR Hanging Lantern 100, ACTOR GreyLamp 101

    I know this is a pretty obvious sounding thing but make sure your ram is turned the right way going in and that it's spaced out between DIMM1 and 3 for both or DIMM2 and 4.

  23. Pretty much nowhere have I seen that, at least in mainstream US media. We've been empathetic to the Russians who have been risking their safety protesting in all sorts of ways. We've watched videos of conscripts who have no idea of what they've been dragged into with horror. Arnold Schwarzenegger has posted an empathetic video addressed directly to the Russian people that has become one of the most liked posts on Twitter. We understand that not every Russian is bad. But we hold the ones who are bad accountable. In my experience that's mostly been Putin, and the people who have bought into the propaganda (and even then we try to take the most empathetic view that they can change if shown the errors in propaganda).
