  1. I've set up tiers on Ko-Fi to help support the artists and musicians who work on Dancing in the Abyss with me! You'll get a special role on my Discord and exclusive first looks at content before it is posted publicly, plus other benefits on higher tiers.

  2. So, here I am.

This has been a difficult 24 hours, to say the least. I recognize that moderating decisions haven’t been very popular here as of late. I also realize what’s been flying around has been a lot of misinformation and vitriol. So here’s what I’ll address.

    1. I have always been as transparent as I can be about my own moderating decisions. If I ask someone to message me, it’s usually because there’s little sense in continuing to derail the thread the moderating decision was made in. I will always refer people to a second opinion or an admin if they do not find my decision was agreeable.

    2. I don’t have control of what other moderators do. I will address a non-public decision (i.e. a warning) as best I can but I won’t always have the answer, unfortunately. We mods talk a lot to each other but we don’t talk about every single action we take.

    3. I realize that it is not great that there is no FAQ, public staff page, or rules. This was something that was an issue long before I came on board and there have obviously been some attempts to address this. We’ve been working as hard as we can on it but rule-making on such a widely diverse public forum can be difficult, to say the least. I have said many times in moderating discussion that I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be for people to receive warnings and sometimes not know what actions they could take to prevent being warned in the first place. This is something that will be addressed as soon as humanly possible. It will not happen overnight.

    4. I tend to take as hands-off a moderating approach as I possibly can, but that does not mean there will be no consequences for shit-posting or shit-headery. Some people seem to think that any moderation action is a bad thing, and that approach simply does not work for this forum, due to the volume and diversity of members.

Lastly, Endless, I’m going to address you, by saying that despite what has happened, I dearly loved and appreciated the Wadazine and its efforts. I loved contributing to it. I loved watching you grow into an avid reviewer and mapper. And that hasn’t changed. I hope you continue to do well for yourself, wherever your journey goes. And I mean that, sincerely. I can’t say I’m not disappointed at what has happened, but I will never regret the past year of contributions and fun we had.

My door is open for anyone to talk to me, leave me constructive feedback about moderating, how to improve the site, etc. I’ve fielded all kinds of feedback from all sorts of places and people since I’ve become a mod and I appreciate the love and passion that you guys still put into this site and its longevity. But most importantly, I just want to know if something is a problem before it blows up. I don’t want anyone sitting here feeling like they can’t touch me, can’t talk to me, can’t look in my direction because I’ll ban them if they do it wrong- that has never been my M.O. I’m empathetic to a fault and I’ll always do my best to level with people. Just talk to me. I’ll answer, in kind.

Not directly related to this conversation, but I think some members take warning a little too personally. A warning is usually just to say "try not to do this in the future". There is no reason to feel opressed by a simple warning. I've gotten several of them and I have never felt like I was being targeted by the mods or at risk of being banned. Most of them were minor, and I accepted them and moved on. I have one major warning for 5 points, and I understand why I got it.

With new members, I imagine that it's hard to get a grip on their personality. It's harder to tell when they are being sarcastic, if they have an attitude problem, or if they just aren't aware of how to behave like a humanoid. I tend to be somewhat of a smartass, but I never try to hurt anyone's feelings or insult their personality. I think that over time, the moderators got a better overall picture of my personality and that I'm not trying to be an asshole, because I haven't got warned for anything in a while.

As a moderator, you end up getting to understand members over time, and with new members or people who don't post a lot, I imagine that can be challenging. If you got warned for a simple incident, it doesn't mean you are being targeted. If you feel you are being targeted, I'd suggest taking a step back and asking yourself why. I don't believe that any of the moderators here are going around picking random people to snipe at with warnings.

In terms of "hypermoderation", I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to keep some derailed threads open as long as healthy discussion is taking place. For example, the "FEAR is overrated" thread had some nice discussions going on, but it was locked. Even if a topic deviates from the original discussion, that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. I think threads should be locked if they become spiteful, antagonistic, or filled up with shitposts. But it's not a huge problem overall.

    3. Liberation

Don't pay attention to the points, they don't actually mean anything.

With regards the "FEAR is overrated" thread, for transparency. I closed it down because while there was some good discussion it kept getting pretty close to "your opinion is bollocks and mine is not" and the thread was kinda bad faith to begin with. Not to mention that matey who hated everything

I personally don't mind the odd thread being used as a bit of shitposting/lol thread, providing there is only 1 or 2. Anymore than that and we end up babysitting multiple threads, which just sucks.

    4. TheMagicMushroomMan

Thanks for the reply, I don't want you to think I was calling you out in particular, you haven't done anything wrong.

I totally get what you're saying, that thread was no doubt made in bad faith so I agree with you there. I probably shouldn't have used that as an example, but I can't think of any other examples, so this probably isn't much of an issue in the first place. People who confuse their own opinions as facts can be a huge nuisance.

I also appreciate the fact that a lot of times you make a final post stating why a thread is locked before you lock it. Little things like that go a long way. I think you do a good job overall, and you interact with the community which is a great thing. I can definitely understand not wanting to have to babysit threads that aren't serving any real purpose.

In regards to points, the post I got warned for was a total blunder on my part, so I understand either way, even if the points don't have real meaning assigned to them.

  3. I don't know how many times I have to say it but if you use mods with maps that already are gpu intensive, don't complain when you lose fps :-) bonus points if those maps warn you that's what will happen :-) :-)

  4. @Bridgeburner56will be giving Technicolor Antichrist Box its first test soon! Come say hi :3

  5. thinking about making a map based on the story of Michael Flatley's Feet of Flames. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, it's a 2000's era Riverdance Irish dance show that was an absolutely incredible experience to watch as a kid. I recently re-discovered it and the world that Flatley created was fantastical, dark, and incredible.

    current inspo:

  6. Finally got textures from Cry of Fear imported and usable in my project (with permission, of course)! Seeing those textures in a Doom map is beyond surreal, and I'm totally stoked to start work on this!

    1. Deleted_Account

Cry of Fear is awesome! And so is Afraid of Monsters. Both are amazing mods.

  7. Putting serious consideration into doing my own community project based on near death experiences.

this project asks mappers: what does death mean to you? Do you fear it, do you embrace it, or do you simply accept it as part of life? What are your thoughts and experiences with it?

I wish I could join, but I'm already knee-deep in mapping projects, so I can only tell you good luck with your first community project ;)

    3. obake

      A very deep idea, indeed.

    4. DMPhobos

Sounds a bit unusual, but it's a fascinating topic, definitively it requires something outside of a traditional maps or even usual gameplay to do justice to the ideas you're asking. UDMF seems perfect for this

  8. Picking up an old mapping project like...

what the fuck was my thought process here?

  9. You can tell it's summer because I actually have time to finish my AMV/GMV projects :D

[I'll eventually finish a Doom map too, I'm sure]

  10. Streaming Umbra of Fate this morning 10 AM EST! Kicking off summer with my most looked-forward to WAD this year! 💉🔮

Sorry I missed it live!  I'm going to check it out now that I'm fully awake and have had breakfast.

      Well, "breakfast"... it's 3pm here.

Such an awesome stream :D  Thanks for playing it!  And yeah, final Doom map (maybe forever, but more likely for the next 5-10 years), and I'm doing Quake next.

I should record my own playthrough at 60fps now...

  11. anyone else get really excited when going to pick out resources that they're using for a new project? I'm starting a new WAD and I'm like a kid in a candy store. "Ooooh, I want this monster, and this monster, and this texture..."

The only thing that sucks is getting everything in the WAD and putting the custom stuff in MAPINFO.

[btw, Bombs Away is on hold for a little bit until school is out, then hopefully I should be done with it by the end of May. It's mostly built, but needs a lot of thing and monster placement. I didn't forget about it, though!]

    1. Remilia Scarlet

      Remilia Scarlet

Oh totally.  My initial PK3 file is usually well over 100mb with more stuff than I'll ever need.

    2. Memfis

Preparing is always exciting, it's the actual work that's depressing.

  12. I hadn't made a GMV in like, two years, so have this one :D

Plucking three good minutes out of two and a half hours of video is hard, yall

  13. Snaptee shirt designs by yours truly! I'm having a lot of fun making these, actually.

  14. We interrupt your daily Doomworld forum surfing for this advertisement:

Have you worn all the tshirts you have until they're nothing but the two threads you hold dearly to? Well, I've got a proposition for you: order my new tshirts! I've got a couple of designs right now, and many more to come! Where can you find them? On my website, of course! They're made via Snaptee, so just click the button under the design you fancy, and boom! You have a new shirt! Order today!
Thanks for your attention. We now return you to your regularly scheduled forum.

  15. Other than some minor brightness fixes and 3D sector stuff, this room is nearly complete! I am not a huge fan of pink but I am loving it in this area. Don't let the girlish color fool you, though- you'll be in for a pretty interesting surprise when you make it here.
    Things learned for this room:

    1. More advanced usage of 3D sectors
    2. Defining variables in ACS (a specific monster, in this case)
    3. Using textures more effectively

    4. The color pink actually can look good when given the chance :)

    1. 42PercentHealth

I'm confident enough in my masculinity to play a pink Doom WAD.

    2. Steve D

      Steve D

Very cool. Love pink. I always wanted a Panther Pink Dodge Challenger.

  16. Finally, got this room done for the most part. Yes, yes, a lot of silver and SHAWN2 but that's the point of this particular room. More fun and color to come!
    Lessons learned for this room:
    1. 3D floors
    2. Dynamic light (types, color, intensity)
    3. Use of transparency on middle textures
    4. More ACS stuff (hooking multiple linedefs to a single action)

    1. Remilia Scarlet
    2. Misty

For more fancyness(is this a real word?) add some floor reflection. Not much, if you don't want your computer to lag.

@Myst.Haruko this is a whatever sort of map, mostly future-tech based. I'll look into that.

  17. I have no idea if I'm going to finish this new map 'o mine. It's a mangled mess of weird ideas thus far. But goddammit, it's all neon and cute. :<

    1. EmotionalFelineinaMadstate

I have the same issue, but I got through that by just keeping myself occupied on GZDoom Builder.

    2. Misty

You can always start new map if you see that older one is mess and build your mapping skills.

  18. Okay, here it is! I'm so excited to be presenting my first serious mapping project.

all the info is in the .txt, but please let me know what you think of it!

  19. *psst* I may or may not be dropping my map on you guys tonight...

  20. it's finally over
