Zekhmet music packs - pack one ready, FRESH EARS NEEDED!
yakfak replied to yakfak's topic in WAD Releases & Development
^the file types aren't directly translatable and there's no native advantage to converting a .MID to a .IT the reason the tunes are in .IT format is because I like the piece of software I use to write them - Open ModPlug Tracker - a lot more than I like any MIDI sequencers out there they're bound to be a little bigger than .MID tunes because I'm dragging the actual instruments and sample sets from the Roland genMIDI table and embedding them in the .IT itself - this is a sample-based format. I've been relatively frugal so that none of the tunes reach 1Mb in size though -
Which WADs would you have people play through to get them into Doom?
yakfak replied to UglyStru's topic in Doom General
hmm if I think they're a seasoned arcade gamer maybe I'd say Rush or Vanguard if they're into weirdness and sheer aesthetics, ALT and Bloody Steel and then shove them towards Sunder so a new speedrunner will be born -
was eye del cul from argentina? i like his weird level sets NIVELES and GARRULO just as likely to be spanish but his name occured to me for some reason and his webpage was geocities so good luck finding that

i don't get it how should barrels of fun play to not be "garbage"? maybe make the monster placement more conventional rather than the surprising way it is now? more imps maybe? how should the map design look to not be "garbage"? maybe apply more conventional texture pairing instead of the strange things it does, maybe a three key hub instead of the interesting layout it has? maybe you could take the barrels out and put all the encounters in a string of square arenas? thank god all the interesting doom 2 levels avoided this noose

i understand forli's frustration because all the recent triple AAA rpgs from this side of the world are casual and repetitive collections of fetch quests which "reward" you only in developing the story of a bunch of incredibly irritating companion characters elex is the hardcore version of that, with some more thought-out quests with proper consequences and aftershocks for the choices you make but you still spend the game exploring a ludicrously oversized world repeatedly doing the same few attacks and seeing the same few items. plus the english translation of the dialogue is really really bad skyrim is so gorgeous in mood but so empty in practice I almost want to say it's in a different genre entirely the problem with modern rpgs is that they build a game world and then force-feed it to you through endless conversations and its usually not worth it. morrowind's lore was worth it, planescape torment's lore was worth it but those are frankly stand-out games especially compared to fallout 3 play more ultima tbh. ultima 4 gives purpose to the repetition, ultima 5 wakes up the mind. ultima 8 is horribly maligned but at least it makes you do a whole bunch of unsavory stuff instead of giving you the whole "oh mighty avatar your mere presence shines golden light on my soul" routine which built up through the ultima 7 games to boiling point (more edits: the first few ultimas were made by a single person and the later ones were still made under his close supervision, and then around ultima 8 I think EA started separating him too much from the property, or something. there is certainly a renaissance of single developer rpgs coming out and that's a good and exciting thing. underrail is a cool exploration & survival isometric rpg from recent years more or less made by one dev which i recommend although you aren't going to get EXCITEMENT - what you get is a solid system and a world that one person has put a huge amount of thought into. i feel like an rpg has to be really personal to its main creator or it'll be overly focus grouped and bland.)

I was searching for a particular midi I made years and years ago. couldn't find it but I found this :P the layout was made 2006/2007, the enemy placement I made just now. it is probably really irritating accompanied by a faintly broken .MUS file also written round that period ten years ago I was probably using ZDoom so I can't blame you if you do that too tested just now in prboom+, also fine nostalgia made me do this now it is yours to be irritated by get it here: http://aanaaanaaanaaana.net/drop/yak2007.wad

*old :P don't get excited, it's not puzzly or interesting or anything years ago i dreamed of making a full megawad like alien vendetta all by myself this is one of teh few scraps

Other games besides Doom, your brain became hardwired to.
yakfak replied to Optimus's topic in Everything Else
my brain doesnt grok how to play doom at all, i'm terrible :) im into it as a creative scene and am not interested in the art of actually beating levels as such i prefer it in fpses when the combat is incredibly casual like hexen's is games i actually get how to play: anything which works like myst or like dungeon master or like xcom captive is my favourite forgotten game i can usually slip comfortably into mmo card games too but frankly i just got burnt by one -
Come up with your own idea for a movie based on a game.
yakfak replied to Spooner5020's topic in Everything Else
wizardry 4 it's a play in one room. main character is werdna who used to be a man of influence and power but is now imprisoned in what used to be his old place of business. today, though, he's woken up with purpose - he's gonna reclaim his youth and rebuild himself as the go-getter he used to be, if he could just get out of this funk he's in then for ninety minutes he enters progressively deeper layers of despondence while failing to find the single door to his cell at any point in the film and eventually goes back to bed a wreck -
John Cena in talks to star as Duke Nukem in upcoming movie
yakfak replied to [McD] James's topic in Everything Else
I don't really mind them screwing up the Duke property cos I've never thought it was any good. starting from the 3D games it has been an exercise in the worship of excess and stupidity. they'll try and do the Deadpool thing with this but Duke isn't as appealing a character and his universe is paper-thin -
if your level doesn't have a gimmick drag it to the recycle bin

mmm i think certain sensitive topics need to be broached in some way but not in a disingenuous, protesting-my-innocence-in-advance way some people's posting styles are brutally conservative in nature and when you call 'em on it it becomes this eh-heh-heh that's just playful talk i'm not really bad and anyway what about free speech thing we're not stupid you obviously have terrible opinions in your head

another tip: to beat eye of the racist beholder you have to push it into the spike trap. it's quite hard to kill it with just your weapons

replaying bloody steel. godlike set, especially map 04 with its convincing outdoor sprawl and snipe-y gameplay which totally suits me. one thing with sets like these is that you're guaranteed not to get any boring spacetech corridors

What's the Doom do you like more?, and what's the one you dislike most?
yakfak replied to Doommarine_maxi's topic in Doom General
doom 2 bundled with NRftL: best levels doom 1: best music final doom: best empty feeling in the pit of your stomach -
the gotcha is the very first moment of the match when you've snuck up on the shotgunner, right? The rest of the entire map is set piece trap after set piece trap so that's your one moment of glory :)) PS this is my very favourite level in any commercial FPS

- this is my own personal thread - I giggle every time someone likes a wad with one of my tunes in and then says "but it's a shame about the music" http://aanaaanaaanaaana.net/drop/04b - wudgrain.it here's another song people can tell me isn't Doom enough for their refined tastes etc
-
honestly I think most horror movies and games rely primarily on the sound - in music, it's an overbearing set of dim/minor-major chords or ambient scraping or a dissonant brass blare or what have you; in sound it's whatever plays on our fight or fright instincts, which can be fairly accurately predicted i still remember the sound effect of that cenobyte looming out of the darkness and drooling maggots without a soundtrack most splatter classics would strictly be comedy films

god, I love Ogdoad, from the expansiveness to the detailing to its difficulty which is right at the upper reaches of what I can beat if I'm paying full attention - that sort of Eternal Doom-style "What am I doing and why am I already dead?" experience in full
-
italo-doom "racist police force"

have probably linked this song before but I don't care. about ten years ago I was absolutely ravenous for music and I devoured a bunch of prog and industrial and weird japanese stuff and post-punk and funk and basically all the interesting genres in one go since then I've been more content with what I know and really bad at acquiring the taste for anything new so this is what I come back to most the single best song I have ever heard

Why does everybody misinterpret what old school fps games like Doom are?
yakfak replied to hardcore_gamer's topic in Doom General
i made chiptune for like ten years and everytime I'd show anyone anything I'd made they'd either say it sounded like megaman or it sounded like pokemon (narrator: it didn't sound like megaman or pokemon) some people's senses of association work on a different kind of aesthetic judgment than yours do and that's just how it is -
IOU one sensible screenshot

the term "incidental music" is another useful way to find this stuff

cool :3 how's yer music sounding? some friends of mine did a little work on forking and updating screamtracker so im tempted to learn that screamtracker was used for a bunch of old epic megagames music iirc
