So, how old are you ?

For my age, I feel like I'm less mature than I should be, but at the same time, I think I'm more disillusioned, physically tired, and world-weary than I should be.

The recent gross thing that has happened to you.

I had a dream recently about my old history teacher from secondary school, I was in his class for only a couple of years. When I was nearing the end of my time at that school I found out he had been fired and put on a register for being in possession of child pornography.

    Your favorite Mech/Mecha/Giant Robot

My favourite types of mech are the sleek humanoid Gundam style mechs, particularly ones with gigantic, pointy wings or some sort of angelic aesthetic. Are wings really necessary on a mech that can simply use thrusters for flight? Are they just ridiculous and impractical in combat? These are great questions, but... Is it awesome as all hell? Examples: Oh yeah, and the Orokin ships from Warframe. Just simply gorgeous and the colour scheme looks amazing on my Excalibur.

What Video Game Are You Currently Playing?

I was really into StarCraft II but I couldn't play for extended periods of time because the game is so involved and matches can last for up to an hour, so I'm fairly exhausted after just a few games. With the release of TotalBiscuit's Axiom mod for SC2 my interest has been piqued once again, it takes some learning but it's a nice new feel for the game that's friendlier for casual play. Bless the modding community for those moments I happen across something that seems perfectly suited to fix whatever nitpicks I have with a game and heighten the overall experience for me.
  8. The oldest files I have are some Word documents from 2002 created by my Dad that were copied into my documents. They've survived in every backup I've ever done and have travelled from every machine I've ever owned, my current machine being a desktop I've had since April this year.

    What are you listening to?

I've found my musical interests drifting from the intense metal side more towards a chill, synthy electronic direction. Makes sense as I'm frequently stressed and use music to calm myself down, and 80's inspired synthwave seems to be most effective for me.

Most toxic gaming communities you have come across.

I have 500 hours of DOTA 2 logged on my Steam account, most of which were matches against bots because I could not stand the whinging petulant manchildren that make up its playerbase. Most matches against complete strangers involved verbal tirades being thrown around at the worst performing players in the match - usually me, picking a support role to try and be useful instead of trying to go for glory like the rest of my team. I had a few matches where I played with people I kind of knew which I suppose is the intended experience because they were actually sort of okay, although frustration was definitely a huge part of the game when our ill-defined plans didn't quite work out. I could probably count the matches I've enjoyed on one hand. Any team-based multiplayer game in which each player's performance determines the success of the whole team just opens the floodgates for elitism and toxicity directed towards anyone whose experience and performance doesn't meet the expected level of "flawless or better", and can quite frankly, get fucked.

Share a random fact about yourself

I have this habit of moving items on my desk so that they are facing completely straight or right angle to everything else. I don't think it's OCD but probably a fairly persistent "neat freak" habit I've had for a long time and not really taken notice of until recently.
  12. All the dark, cynical and fatalistic humor I see on social media in response to all the negative news being shovelled out of mainstream news outlets on an hourly basis, which is not necessarily an issue by itself, though I have the fear that I'm starting to take it seriously and to believe the world really is as bad as people constantly joke or say it is. It's probably just a lack of perspective on my part, or just finding myself in the wrong spaces and having my general mood put through the floor.

    Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

I'm fairly hyped for this game as I loved the previous instalment, I'm glad it did well and a sequel is happening. Due to the pricing of games nowadays and the hardware requirements I probably won't get to play it just yet. Still, it's hard for me not to get excited in the meantime. The way the game has marketed itself and the response to it is... interesting, but I'm more concerned about how the quality of the game itself fares. From what I've seen it looks to be everything the first game was and more and I'm fairly confident it'll meet my personal expectations.
  14. DooM is one of my favourite games to play, but I'm getting a little tired of it. I have tons and tons of levelpacks and gameplay mods - I have a list of all my favourites, and am pretty open to trying out new releases as they come out, so I have almost a limitless amount of DooM levels and gameplay variations to play, but my enthusiasm for the game is really wavering. I could always play something else to vary it up, be it a more recent FPS title with the same kind of snappy controls and fast-paced action as Doom such as Painkiller or Wolfenstein: The New Order, or a different type of game entirely such as Risk of Rain or Hollow Knight, but I'm really not as compelled to play games of any sort, and Doom is the game that I am most familiar with and can boot up immediately, without having to boot up Steam, wrestle with the game settings to run semi-smoothly on my hardware, or having to download 60 GB of updates, DLC and other bullshit. My point is, have you ever had a hobby and felt like your enthusiasm for it is running dry? What do you do when that happens?

I'm getting bored with Doom. What do I do?

Yeah, I think a break from video games in general might do me some good. Sometimes I forget that I can enjoy other things a lot more if I'm in the mood for it. There's usually something I can still derive pleasure from even if it's not obvious to me at first. What other hobbies do you guys have besides Doom?
  16. I'm up for this. I haven't mapped in months but this is a good enough chance to pick it up again.

Things about Doom you just found out

I've played DooM for over a decade and only in the last year have I learned exactly how the BFG works. Also I only recently discovered that Revenants can die in just 2 SSG shots rather than 3. Maybe I was just a lousy shot this whole time.

What PWADs invoke the most nostalgia for you?

I have the fondest recollection of Requiem and also Equinox. Those are the oldest WADs I've played that qualify for being nostalgic.

How Do You Stay Focused on a Single Project?

Ah, the eternal dilemma of being able to stay focused in one's work. This plagues me daily when it comes to a lot of things, not just Doom mapping. Here are some of the techniques I've learned from all the years I've spent trying to figure this out: Starting is the hardest part, whether that means starting something for the first time, or coming back to something after a period of inactivity where you're out of a creative groove. The best advice I can give you is to "just do it". Sit down and start working, regardless of whatever motivational crash or mapper's block you're getting through. Very often, ideas will start coming to you WHILE you are working, not BEFORE. The worst that can happen is that no ideas come to you, making the process as frustrating and painful as you had initially feared. This will happen from time to time, unfortunately, but as long as you can do some work and act on a couple of ideas and have made something at the end, you can call it a hard-earned victory. Secondly, to keep a project going, if you're extremely lucky and have the ability to stay motivated then you'll be happy as you keep making progress and build momentum. Taking breaks is important or else you'll burn out. This is a problem for people who map too much to the point of exhaustion, rather than someone like myself who can't stay motivated or build momentum for toffee. In this case, you have to just stick with the project and make do without that motivation. It sounds awful and difficult and it doesn't really get any easier with time, but you just have to accept that the satisfaction will come while you're working on the project, and at the end of the project, not before. Thirdly, how do you know the project is done so you can stop working on it? I have developed a tactic called "Fuck It That'll Do" where I stop working on something if I think it's good enough for other people to play. You are often your own harshest critic, and people usually won't spot all the little flaws and mistakes that you can. Better if you don't spend any time worrying about the little details that don't matter as long as you think your project is at least 80% "complete", whatever the hell "complete" means to you. Don't overcook your projects, you'll burn out, you'll become sick of your own map, and all the little details you fussed over might not even be noticed. The sooner you let your project go, the sooner you can start on another project where you can try out some all-new ideas and start afresh. That's what I've learned anyway. Even I have trouble following these guidelines, so it's okay if it's a lot to take in. Unfortunately I can't offer any magical trick to stay focused on a project except for the painfully obvious cliche of "just do it", but that really is what gets results. As I have mentioned above, remember to take frequent breaks and give yourself breathing room from the project so that you can look at it with a fresh perspective. Having a hobby is a good way to clear your head and try something different. Unfortunately we can't be the unstoppable dynamos of limitless creativity that we dream of being. We can get close, perhaps, but only with a lot of hard work over a long time.

The DWIronman League dies to: Mapgame

Pretty late to the party, but I think I'm gonna give this a go. Luckily my streaming/screen capture software is configured from the last time I used it. I've never actually played this before so a totally blind run might make for some interesting viewing. First attempt: Furthest I got was E1M2 and got stuck because an important door wouldn't open, although I was running with the wrong compat settings so it wasn't even a valid run. Will attempt this again with the proper settings. That'll teach me not to read.
  23. This is awesome! Especially if you run it with H2H-Xmas or 32in23-14. I'm gonna load up this mod with my regular DooMing experience every Christmas as a new tradition! Actually this reminds me of the secret Christmas mode from Tyrian. More games should have Christmas modes! Merry Christmas everyone. And if you don't celebrate Christmas, then have a great Sunday!
