  1. For me, Doom is a bit of a constant, something I'll always come back to. I'll go off and play other games for awhile, or, as I get older, play no games at all for a bit. Eventually, however, I always find myself coming back to Doom. It's because the core game play is great fun with few others like it and there is a lot of quality custom content at our fingertips.

It is also a bit of a stress reliever when life gets annoying or I just need a break in general.

  2. I'd be down for some Saturday tournaments or something like that. Mostly duel tournaments, classic style etc. None of this capture the flag stuff, that's what Tribes is for.

It's been some time since I've been on any of the servers. I have been quite busy for awhile now and when I have had time I typically only feel like doing single player. However, I am trying to carve out some more time for things other than work and I would like to get back into Doom DM.

  3. I am on doomkids irc server sometimes and I like some good vanilla style deathmatch and dueling. Unfortunately I can be a little in and out because life, for example I haven't been on a lot recently because of finals and end of school. However, that will be done soon and I'll be on a lot more so if your ever on doomkids irc channel (quakenet.org, #DMStuff) hit me up for a game or two.

  4. Yes unfortunately other than map 1 from doom 2, none of the original maps are very good for DM. Even then map 1 is only good for 1v1. However, if your up for some old school DM via chocolate doom I'd be down. I'd love to do some old school DM pwads like dwango5 or Gothicdm.

  5. This is for NA players only unfortunately.

I just want to pitch this idea and see the interest level. Is anyone interested in a dueling league for chocolate doom? Nothing real huge or anything but just like a round robin for seeding then a tournament. Depending on the amount of players I was thinking people would play a game each week (maybe 2) and it would go over the course of a few weeks and then on an agreed upon weekend or something we'd all get in IRC and have the tournament.

We can tweak the rules later I'm just curious as to how many people would sign up.

  6. A good challenge i used to always do was to try to play all the way through without dying at all. Made it a real different experience because dying meant so much more.
Obviously this only works with megawads or the original iwads.

Yeah, I'll see if I can get on board for that if I find time.

    awesome!

    #DMstuff

I'll be on a lot today, Monday, and Tuesday, but not much time during the week, next weekend will be pretty good too though, usually late afternoon and evening US central time is good.

  8. Would anyone in the eastern half of the US possibly be up for some Chocolate Hexen co-op sometime this month in celebration? I have beaten the game before so if you haven't gotten past hub 1 this might be your chance haha

I'm on #DMstuff on irc.quakeworld.org a lot, hit me up there if you're interested

  9. I normally play vanilla doom on my old DOS computer and I think its the best doom experience once you get it all set up. The smoothness of vanilla doom is unmatched. Also it's really not that big of a pain to set up I don't think.

I love iwad deathmatch with strict Vanilla settings! I'll kick your ass at Doom 2 map05. Hit me up on IRC yo

Nah, d5m1 for the ultimate experience.

Also what irc channel? I'll get on when I get a new laptop my current one is broken.

@doomkid chocolate doom is really the only one I trust to be able to closely emulate vanilla, granted it's been awhile since I explored other source ports and I never gave odamex a try? What source port does that use?

  11. I'd be down for multiplayer, but only chocolate doom duel or FFA. Too many times have I been in a zdaemon FFA game where it's 16 players on a map half the size of e1m1 all trying to BFG each other. I'll only do FFA if it's max of 4 players like the old days.

Tribes is the only game where CTF holds any appeal to me. Sorry CTF guys.

  12. I've never heard it called 1v1 mode but yeah just one versus one. And while yeah it's easy to just adjust player count, not all games are necessarily good for dueling. Also, duels tend to have different setups and what not as compared your standard FFA. Like in Q3 the quad damage doesn't appear in the duel mode but it does in FFA.

Just go to youtube and type in "quake live cooller" to see some high level QL/Q3 duels to give you an idea of what I'm talking about (obviously done at a very high level, however)

EDIT: looked up tournament mode for quake 3 arena and yeah that's what I'm talking about. I only played quake live and they called it dueling so that's why I wasn't sure what you meant by that.

  13. While Yeah we can make our own modes in snapmap the better question is will the things given to us (i.e. Guns and items given in the game etc.) be balanced in a manner suitable for dueling? There are still variables we might not have control over that will have an effect on duels.

And yeah maybe a dueling game like quake is a little too much to ask for at this time. However I've noticed that as well, that doom dueling, while skillful, doesn't emphasize certain things as much as quake dueling does (aka map control) and maybe that'll make it easier to revive some interest if they are able to make it like the old doom gamrs in that regard, challenging dueling but not such a steep learning curve that it will dissuade newcomers.

  14. Dueling in arena shooters has always been of particular interest to me. It is the true test of one's skill and knowledge of the game and its intricacies. You have only your own skill, knowledge, and focus to rely on. You can't rely on others (or blame others if you lose), nor is their much luck involved in a well crafted dueling game and there is little room for error. It has always been the ultimate challenge in arena shooters.

Dueling should be an important part of the DOOM multiplayer for several reasons.
    1. History has defined dueling it as a part of an arena shooter. Arena shooters have always partially been judged by how good of a dueling game they are.
    2. It is still the true test of one's skill pure skill at the game. Not just in arena shooters, but in any well designed multiplayer game, in my opinion.
    3. Arena shooters are the best fps platform for it. From lack of load-outs to the various spawn points, it forces the player to be adequate with several guns, have knowledge of the map layout and their own position, keep track of what their opponent has and try to predict what they have gotten since the last encounter, and boast great skill in things such as aim and dodging. There are a multitude of other reasons why arena shooters are the best fps platform for dueling, but I won't get into all that.

While it is obvious that dueling should be a vital part of the DOOM multiplayer (according to me at least :D), I'm curious if others think so, and if ID thinks so. Dueling has not been popular in FPS, generally speaking, for quite some time. Also, games like counter-strike and various MOBAs have become vastly popular since dueling started to dwindle. The common theme in all of those is teamwork. This makes me question whether ID (or whoever is doing the multiplayer, I know it's being outsourced) will keep it in mind while the multiplayer is designed. I think the idea makes many people uncomfortable. Having everything on them with only themselves to blame if they lose (yet all the glory if they win), having to pick themselves up when they get knocked down instead of being helped up (and not having others to blame for their loss) etc. etc.

I'm curious, what is everyone else's take on the subject? Do y'all think dueling is dead for the better, or do you agree with me and think it is a vital part of this genre and ID should make the possibly bold move of making sure it is a quality game for dueling.

p.s. does anybody here play quakeworld? Quakeworld dueling is something I've wanted to get into for sometime, but it is extremely hard to find people to play with in the States, and the ones who are around have been playing forever and could kick my ass :D, I'm only 21 so I wasn't old enough to play these games back in the day unfortunately.

What did everyone think of the Soundtrack? Imo, it was good, although I really wanted something a little more metal than that. But I guess it wouldn't fit with the overall style of the game.

I agree. What I heard I liked, but just like in the original doom there is a time and place for both metal and something a little more ambient.
