    The Doom Confessional Booth

Thanks, I think that's kinda what I meant as well, but I expressed myself badly. In other words: There are plenty of great WADs out there that offer an amazing experience just on their own without using any mods that change the playing experience significantly such as BD.

    The Doom Confessional Booth

So many great vanilla PWADs out there as well, and BD won't be that playable (or at all) on some of them. It's always fun to go through a few Cacowards WADs to get a feeling of some of the best that is available.

Doom wads that are actually fun to play.

I made a similar post some time ago - I was looking for medium difficulty WADs that are also good looking and are well designed. Check it out, I updated the first post with all the suggestions in the thread. Mind that it was in October 2015. Anyways this made me think that there should be a table somewhere where WADs are rated according to their difficulty levels. This is subjective of course but perhaps the community could have a vote in the thread for that specific WAD. For example, out of 10 I would give the following mega WADs the following difficulty ratings: - nuts.wad 9.5 (I haven't actually played it much so this is completely subjective) - Sunder 9 - Deus Vult 2 8 - Going Down 8 - Jenesis, The Rebirth, Doom Reloaded, Coffeebreak 6 or 7 etc. So if such a table existed it would be easy to pick one that you think suits whatever you are looking for (not necessarily your level, but maybe you just want something easier for a change). Note of course that some mapsets may have significantly varying maps in terms of difficulty, the last two maps of Coffee Break are in my opinion quite a bit harder than the rest.

    Coffee Break demos [-complevel 9]

Map 10: Fort UV-Max in 6:20 (TAS) Please note that this is not an optimised TAS run. (I think a top runner would be able to reach this time in a single segment.) I simply found the map too hard to do a competitive run in a reasonable amount of time so I made a simple multi-segmented run without slomo, software or any other tricks, with the idea of posting a cool, natural looking run to my YouTube channel. However, since no demos for this map exist yet, I thought it may be useful to watch. This is a new venture for me however so I don't view this run as competitive. cafebrk10tas620.zip

OK cool, I suppose I'll post it then because that map hasn't been done yet. Obviously I'll be clear that it was a TAS and what kind. Cheers

    YouTube speedrunners

I agree with you Memfis. I have a YouTube channel but also contribute here. Once in a while, I tell an interested commentator and/or aspiring speed runner that they should post here and try to help where I can. I always post in the description where the original demo can be found and what software is needed. PS If I remember correctly you posted on one of my first vids around 5 years ago and encouraged me to post to DSDA as well. :) I also post videos for which I don't post the .lmp here. Recently I started doing multi-segmented runs (no proper TAS) that I try to do well but without being competitive, because there is no such category. Just made such a run for one of the Coffee Break maps that I haven't converted to video yet. Apart from maybe functioning as a demo to give someone ideas for tackling the map, I see no reason to post it here otherwise. (But let me know if you disagree.) Hence I agree with guys like RobinSena that not every demoer necessarily does it for the competitive aspect, even if the demos are good. I don't think it's bad that this split exists, it just means that there are different communities that cater to different needs. However I agree that it's good to let more people on YT know about the existence of the DSDA and encourage them to contribute.

Real Talk: Do people use difficulty settings?

Interesting thoughts, but you could just as well say that playing UV also misses out on content because of the extra items that are usually available on lower difficulty settings. So I just see it as a different dimension of game play. As for myself, in over a decade the only WAD I remember playing on HMP and not UV (because it was too hard) is Disturbia. I sometimes grind myself to dust trying to finish a tough WAD on UV, but usually manage.

Map 12 UV Max in 6:58 Someone pointed out to me that the last secret doesn't need an arch-vile jump and so, much time could be saved. Well not to the extent of 3:41, but in this run I got better infighting and changed a few tactics. jen12-658.zip

    The Wrestling Thread

Haha. Also stopped watching years ago, also got interested again thanks to Whatculture. Still not watching episodes but sorta keeping up with the news on YouTube. I'm pretty interested in behind the scenes stuff though. Politics, management, real life feuds, personalities, injuries, drug abuse, wrestler histories, etc. and of course how the whole machine (business) works, on the mat and off it. Wrestling is a pretty unique phenomenon and tells us a lot of the human psyche and the extent to which the human body can take punishment. Even issues such as feminism are relevant, for example I see a lot of people who are against mixed gendered wrestling, especially if the woman is slapped around a bit, but logically, feminism entails that since women are to be treated equally, they should also take part in mixed wrestling matches, and men shouldn't hold back because of the mere fact that they are women. Wrestlers like Chyna (also plenty in Japan) have proven that it is possible. Only third-wave feminists who think that women should be handled with kid gloves should cringe at the idea.

    Rebirth demos [-complevel 2]

Nice run, although you could do even better, also IIRC you don't need to press that button at the end. :)

    "TAS Lite"?

I suppose this is an advantage over load and save, although I've never had to take a break long enough to forget what I was supposed to be doing. If that day comes, I'll know what to do. :)

    "TAS Lite"?

So I've been playing around with -recordfromto and I've found it to be a lot of fun. As you might have guessed, I'm not very familiar with TAS (although I enjoy watching them of course). Using only -recordfromto however gives me a sense of what the optimal level is that I can perform at using normal play. I guess one can use it to tweak the RNG in your favour in addition, but other than that, it still involves normal play without any other "cheats". Attached is a UV-Fast demo of Map 14 of The Rebirth where I achieved a 49 second improvement (out of 6:34, but which I think I could improve by at least 20 seconds in normal play anyway). (Please don't upload to DSDA.) (It does incidentally include three successive arachnotron kills with only two rockets each, and those weren't actually tweaked in any way.) So I was just wondering if there has been any discussion yet about a sort of "TAS lite" category where only certain TAS features may be used? This would in no way detract from the immense hours of hard work put in by proper users of TAS, but would rather be a way to get people interested in the possibilities and as a way to produce more quality demos (close to non-TAS categories but mostly still better) in less time. Or has this discussion been done and dusted, with the decision that there is only black and white (for perhaps good reasons)? Thanks, Kotzugi reb14f545.zip

    "TAS Lite"?

There you go - I didn't even get my terminology right. To be honest, in my example, it was more like to see what kind of time I could be aiming for, given a "perfect" run (assuming the route etc. is the best). It would of course be a different ball game if I actually competed against other runners using segmented runs. On the other hand, I guess it may not necessarily be the best route for a single-segment run, as you could have a much riskier approach with the multi-segments?

Where do demons go when they die in Hell ?

Let's look at this logically. Hell must have a finite amount of space. As far as we know, demons don't get babies. Yet Doom is played all the time and new WADs appear all the time, and yet, there are always monsters, no matter how many times you run DooM. Because hell is finite and demons don't procreate, there can't be an infinite number of monsters, and therefore, at least some of them must be respawned. Few people play on nightmare, there aren't lots of arch-viles on average, and there is, on average, only one John Romero per DooM 2 WAD, so there must be at least one other kind of respawning mechanism going on. Either that, or there must be some kind of massive demon hive somewhere where they DO get babies, and we have yet to discover and destroy it... But do we want to destroy it? Do we really want DooM to end, once and for all?? OMHBAGOSH

    Rebirth demos [-complevel 2]

Funny, I get that overflow bug thingy playing back 30rbmax (-skipsec 170, map 3) on GlBoom+ 2.5.1.3 using Rebirth1.wad. Basically it desyncs but the player also runs through walls and enemies. Would be nice to know why.

    Perdition's Gate Demo Pack Released

Wow I'm only seeing this one now. Thrilled that my few demos have all been beaten, so it's sure to be good quality, especially with 4shock at the helm. Congratulations! I will update my YouTube vids to link to this thread. Very much looking forward to watching.
