Memento Mori 3, question about E2M7
Olroda replied to Linguica's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Elaborate, please (because it would be interesting to read). -
Doom: Infamous 'talk to the monsters' review was on the right side of history
Olroda replied to Linguica's topic in Doom General
Unless you let your guns do the talking for you! I've read somewhere that the greatest conversation opener is a running chainsaw. -
Ultimatum - Riding on the Backs of Giants [Now on /idgames!]
Olroda replied to Death Egg's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Thanks, and good luck! I have been looking forward to this for two weeks, now. -
It reminds me a bit of John Blanche's art.

Not at all, actually. But I think we like DooM for different reasons. Thanks, will do!

I can only agree with 999cop - and I'd like to add that comparing this excuse of a cyberdemon with the real deal from 1993 is much like comparing wow.wad with e2m8.
-
I certainly wouldn't dispute that, but I like some story and "sense of place" i.e. abstract but still recognisable as an actual location (like E1), stuff lying around and monsters have a plausible reason for being located where they are (other than being there to shoot or supply the player with munitions), and so on.

I was also able to kill the two revenants, but not the throng in the other map. I meant the pump-action shotgun, however. Not that it matters much. This is actually the kind of maps that I referred to with my other comments in the thread where my quote came from. No offense, but I have a hard time understanding how anyone can enjoy these kind of maps. Whatever floats your boat, eh?

I'm sure that some slaughtermaps are better than others. It's the theme (for want of a better word) that I'm no fan of. I'm more of a "less is more" kind of guy.
-
What he typed ^. So for me, it's an easy choice. IWAD UV. I consider the current "mapping fad" be both heavy-handed and unimaginative in equal measure. Consider this: A hundred screaming revenants in an open, bright space against a player with the BFG9000 is less of a challenge than two revenants in a dark maze against a player with six shells left in his shotgun.

How often should shotgun put enemies in pain state?
Olroda replied to PsychoGoatee's topic in Doom General
It certainly feels like it is when you're using it on hellspawn, but consider how effective it is against (former) humans. It takes only a few (2-6 shots) to kill zombiemen and sergeants. I'd say that it is fairly realistic when compared to the effectiveness of an actual pistol against a human target. Of course, Our Hero swallows 20-7 (on average 10) shots before taking a dirtnap, but he's just that tough and determined! -
Wouldn't say no to that! I especially like the interactive aspect of his recent maps. Areas changing, monsters attacking you from several directions at once, etc.

Ultimatum - Riding on the Backs of Giants [Now on /idgames!]

I've got a few ideas for my map already, but what about weapon and monster progression? Any limitations we may need to be aware of? -
I want to ask unusual permission about using AV map...
Olroda replied to Dexiaz's topic in Doom General
They sure do, and I can only agree with what Vorpal typed: You seem adamant to not pursue the tribute / inspiration route though, which is a shame, because I think that such a concept has lots of potential. -

Why not make a *similar* map as a tribute to it instead, then? -

This seems like fun. I'd like to join, if I may. -
You succeeded. It sure looks suitably grim! I think that the low resolution adds to the "atmosphere" of the picture.

birabuto.wad, Super Mario Land-inspired short map
Olroda replied to Death Egg's topic in WAD Releases & Development
I'm not at all bothered by the many former humans, but I must agree with Impie and lament the invisible barriers. It was a fun map though, and I especially liked that if you managed to stay on the high ground, you were rewarded before the encounter with the first revenant. Verdict: Well done! -
Such things are more or less "standard practise", actually. At least among larger corporations.

Threshold Of Pain II - ACT 2 RELEASED
Olroda replied to scalliano's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Good stuff! I'm really looking forward to playing ToPII, whenever it's done. -
I too, must wait until June until they get where I live. Looking forward to it!

Isn't that obvious? While the Phobos base is less corrupt than UAC-Deimos, E1M8 is the source of the invasion. I don't find it one bit strange that the area surrounding the anomaly have parts that are "beyond human comprehension". Also, it seems that quite a few people harbour a strong dislike against the Chasm. Why is that so? I thought it was all right. Perhaps not great, but...
-
What's that, Kontra Kommando? The revenant retirement home?
-
What about his Quake levels, or the new E1M8b that he made recently? I thought those were a blast!

Well, my right hand is my dominant hand, but when I was training Kendo (japanese fencing) I was taught to use my left instead, and that went well. I think it's actually more a matter of dedication and training than "being" ambidextrous, right or left handed (not that you implied otherwise, Face23785). Perhaps Our Hero is punching with his left because it's quicker for him to switch to his guns with his right.
