    Older Doomers Opinions

Hmm... The new DooM could be fun, perhaps, but I'm heartfelt fed up with the "reboot" shit at this particular moment in time. It pervades every aspect of the entertainment industry these days. Is it a felony to come up with new ideas? Why not continue the story after DooM II or 64 instead of doing DooM I all over again? Other than that, I think that the weapons seem weak in both damage output and sfx, the "glory kills" are silly, and the graphics and overall atmosphere is nowhere near as grisly as in the predecessors. Also, I can't stand the dubstep (or whatever it's called) inspired music. So, no, I won't be getting it, not when we have over twenty years of WADs to play through.

Why do so many people dislike Doom II?

I think DooM II is a great game, but DooM is even better. In fact, D2 is more like an expansion pack than its own game. Just think of all the recycled stuff! The levels are also uglier, at least when compared with E1.

What we don't know about Doom

Wouldn't that be because he's got only a single knuckleduster?

Post your Doom video! [but don't quote video]

I hope you'll make some more Hexen or Heretic episodes in the future, Rubilacxe. I sure enjoyed watching Hexercise and the others.
  5. ...And don't forget that the average player wasn't as good at playing the game as one would be now! The "FPS" was a new concept, after all. I'm not at all surprised if the majority of players were in fact introduced to it by Wolf3d or DooM.
  6. I'm not so sure that nobody will. The archives are loaded with maps of similar style, after all (Worst and best case scenario: You get mentioned in "Sector Toilet Aficionado" magazine). Bottom line- If you want to make such an episode, you should!
  7. I played it on Ultra-Violence. A nice looking map with excellent lighting, something that I wish more mappers would pay attention to. It flows very well, but might be a bit too easy on UV. Hunting for secrets is always fun. All in all, a good MAP01. Looking forward to playing more of the same.
  8. Hello Nicolas! I played some Mano Laikas this week. I didn't find any blatant errors, but I came to some conclusions: -You're able and willing to alter your mapping style, which is pretty impressive. There are significant differences between the latest Favillesco, Erkattäññe and Mano Laikas, for instance. -Ruki looked really good, and reminded me of the "biomechanical" art of H.R. Giger. Intentional? -I liked the new music, but the re-use of old tracks was a bit of a downer, since I associate those with your earlier maps. -The super-secret map was creepy, but I guess that it was intentional. However, she's quite the beauty and you should consider yourself a lucky man, I think! -You execute the 1994 / early PWAD style very well. Unfortunately for me, I can't say that I find it to my liking. I'm permanently stuck in E1 mode, it seems.

    Take Your Pick

DooM I is one of the best games ever created. Especially the E1 part.
  10. Thanks for the advise and the kind words; I'll be sure to take them to heart. I know full well how easy it is to be bogged down by placing things instead of pushing through with the general layout. I had to look up Dark Forces since I hadn't played it since the last millenium, but I agree - there is something inspirational in that architecture, even though it is very simple. Many times, less is often "more", and I think it is true in this case, just as it is in DooM. However, at this point I'm not sure where my WAD will end up, aesthetically. My general idea is to keep it close in style to the original games, but then there are aspects where I feel that some extra elaborations wouldn't detract from the experience. Finally, mapping sure takes time, but it's a fun hobby, and once you're done with a map it stays that way. No maintenance required!
  11. First off, I wish to congratulate you for a well-deserved Cacoward for "Anger". I thoroughly enjoyed that one, even though it lacked your signature murder closets. It may sound strange after all the negative comments I made about them, but knowing that one is bound to appear apparently makes for a lot of tension (not to mention a sigh of relief if you get out in one piece!), which is a very good thing. Still, Erkattäññe had another challenge to it, and it shows that even the "easier" monsters can be used to deadly effect without resorting to the heavy-handed slaughter-type technique which currently seems so popular. It sure was uglier than your previous episodes, but since it is DooM II inspired, it is quite apt. There is an eerie quality to to your levels which I find very appealing. I think it has to do with the layouts, the lighting and the music choices. In any case, Erkattäññe sure had it too. I had been meaning to comment much earlier, but time is scarce these days, unfortunately. If it isn't work that gets in the way, it's my yet to be released Alpha/E1/Marathon-inspired D1 episode. ...Which moves forward at glacial speed. At least, I can look forward to playing your new megawad (quite surprising that you released another one so soon!), Mano Laikas. I'll see if I can't hunt for some bugs over the next week, or so.

It's a sure sign that things have gone south!

Doom 1 Episode 1 - your favorite level?

Very tough choice, but if I have to, I'll go with E1M5: Phobos Labs. Foreboding music, a few evil ambushes and some areas bereft of light. You can really feel that you are getting close to the source of the invasion. A sane man would turn around, but you're out of choices, so...

    Quake 1 style ambient music

Very Quake-like indeed. If you aren't making music for a Quake 1 sequel yet, you definitely should!

You MUST play this Quake map pack.

Thanks for the tip, DooM_RO. I will have to give it a try when I find some time. Hopefully soon.
  18. How about a very dark cavern, contrasted by bright pools of glowing magma... With lots of Lost Souls and Pain Elementals everywhere. A few large chambers intertwined by winding, narrow tunnels. No medikits, stimpacks or armour, just a liberal sprinkle of armor and health bonuses. If you're feeling evil, hand the player a launcher, some of rockets, and little else.

    DOOM HD Project

That BIGDOOR2 sure looks impressive. Out of curiosity, how long does it take you to make such a model?

Things about Doom you just found out

I'm not sure if "Things about Doomworld you just found out" would fit in here, but... http://www.doomworld.com/greenpile/

    Alpha Complex (Warren.wad Redux)

Very good visuals and lighting, despite the cramped theme. Fairly atmospheric, but a slower music track would probably been a better choice. Way too much armour and supplies to prove a challenge, even on UV. People complaining about "switch hunts" should stay away from this one. I liked it, though. It would be interesting with an entire epsode done in this style.

    Best cheap eats?

Oatmeal porridge. Takes less than five minutes to make. Norse recipe. What you need: Pot. Stove (a fire works, too). 4-5 decilitres* of water. 2 decilitres of oatmeal. A pinch of salt (only if you feeling wealthy enough). Mix the ingredients and put it on a stove. Light the stove. Stir continuously until the stuff becomes porridge, and a bit after that, when it thickens. Serve it in a bowl with milk and a spoonful of lingonberry jam. *A single decilitre container would be roughly equal in size to a small coffee-cup (not a beaker).

    Texture resizing and you

I must agree with what has already been stated, and the Civ said it best, I think: A definite NO vote from me.

    Additional Thing Flags

Sounds like one could have some fun with such a flag. There's actually a "Fast" flag in ZDooM, though it's called "ALWAYSFAST" there. ...But I take it that you meant when mapping in the original format (or close to it) and from the map editor, yes?
  25. Absolutely! This sounds like a worthy endeavour, if care is taken to enforce a sense of progression. Since the SSG tends to dominate whenever introduced*, I agree that it should appear late in the WAD. Towards the end of "episode" III sounds about right. *= Which makes me wonder why our real-life military bothers with assault rifles. Hand out a bunch of sawn-off shotguns, damn it! Not only are they cheap and commonplace, but the stopping power of a single blast is comparable to twenty machinegun rounds! And with some circle-strafing, even tanks will become obsolete, crushed beneath the might of the most respectable object in the universe!
