i also have a doom sound pack for windows somewhere, like door open / close for maximizing / minimizing windows, chainsaw for starting an .exe, imp idle for background activity or something like that... haven't used since moving to windows 7, but perhaps i'll install it again.

Right now I have the Arachnotron noticing sound for when a device gets plugged in, and the Arachnotron death sound for a device getting unplugged. I would love to replace more sounds, but I can't really think of anything else.

Also wondering which Doom sound wouldn't make an obnoxious ringtone...

  2. I'm actually glad that the month I get a chance to join in, we're playing this.

    E1M1 - Hangar
    100% Kills/100%Items/100% Secrets (Don't remember my time)

I saw my cousin playing this game with his friends. It looked so cool to me. When I finally downloaded the free version, my stepdad got mad at me for playing a violent game without asking him first. I was mad too, but my parents soon let me play. I loved the music, the feel of killing my first monster, completing the level and enjoying the rest of Doom. It's an experience I'll never forget.

Something's definitely objecting to being interrupted. What video hardware are you using and when was the driver last updated?

Have you tried disabling pop-ups in the offending applications, or shutting them down while playing?

Thank you for responding. The apps open themselves, (Even if they're not running) which might force me to uninstall. I'll try disabling pop-ups, but I don't know if I can do that with all of them. I'll just try uninstalling the useless ones. I also forgot to mention that this only happens on my laptop, (I can easily use the windows key to get out on my desktop computer) which is using an AMD x8650. I'll try your solution out.

  4. "Catastrophically" might be a little bit of an exaggeration, but this problem is getting pretty annoying.

In both GZDoom AND Zandronum, the frame will freeze up, the sound will stop, but the mouse cursor will still be visible. This seems to happen only when I'm using fullscreen mode and something pops up in the background like McAfee hammering me to buy another subscription (Hell no) or Steam asking if I want to update. To get out of it, I have to manually restart my computer.

Is there anything I can do in the applications or in windows I can do about it, or will I just have to deal with this?

The very worst offense is when movies and/or shows uses stock Atari 2600 sound effects from Pac Man and Donkey Kong to depict a modern console being played by the actors. It's insulting because everybody knows where those sounds came from, except of course the cheap-asses that decided to use them for sound effects.

I imagine it's probably a cheap way of getting out of having to get the rights to use modern game sound effects, but It's a very half-assed way to get around that. It reminds me of this one time I was in a Target where the electronics isle had a picture of some kids laughing and playing on a DS that didn't even have a game inserted.

The spawn cube sound is the only one I hear often, and it never works as well as it does for the spawn cubes. Seriously, that's the only thing that sound works well for, stop using it as a generic fire/plasma ball sound, and it's certainly not an appropriate sound for a rocket launch.

Yeah, of all Doom sounds the icon of sin spawn cube seems to be used the most commonly. And it is misused alot.

EDIT: Oh, and the ironic thing is that the sound effect was based off of a fireball launch. Look up "Fireball impact and large fire burst rumble" if you want to find it.

  7. Has anyone else ever heard a sound used in Doom used in another Movie, TV Show, or Game?

It sounds like Doom actually uses a good amount of stock sound effects, but I still like hearing them outside of Doom.

-Aqua Teen Hunger Force uses the Icon Of Sin cube spawn sound effect for Frylock's telekinesis power. (In the first and second episode at least)

-This Star Trek game uses the sound effect for the door:

    Any other examples?

This was on TV Tropes, too:

maybe they just recorded someone saying quite then slowed it down by 200%?

I was thinking the same thing, It could've been like how the Icon of Sin's chant was made. I also feel it could just be pure coincidence, since it's pretty rare you'd be able to make such a perfect growling sound using a recording of someone talking.

EDIT: Oh, and don't you mean slowed by 50%?
