Hey, make another map set or something

Yeah I know man, it sucks, because you're by far my favourite doomer and I'd love to do some stuff with you. Ill just have to settle for watching, I hope you never stop.
-
So watching my old LP videos, I'm really considering going back to my old style of playthroughs instead of doing everything from pistol-start. It's not that I don't want to do pistol-start runs anymore, but it's almost like there's no sense of continuity and it doesn't feel like I'm actually "progressing" through a WAD like you would a story-mode in any other video game. But the pistol-starts work as a sort of walkthrough for people planning UV-Max runs or something along those lines.
What do you guys think? Should I stick to pistol-starts as I did with Disjunction and Ancient Aliens? Or go back to the roots? Or does it really even matter?

Oh, and don't forget to watch my TNT: Rev playthrough, because I need feedback, cause I am n00b doing videos in english, lol

If I wanted to start mapping, which format should I use? I'm not sure of the differences between all of the formats and compatibility. Which is most universal?
I know there's talk about making ZDoom-based ports the "standard" (which is funny because ZDoom halted development back in January), but that's another topic in its own.

So about 5 months ago, I picked up a job in tech support for a software company. Just got word from the programming manager that they want to hire me to the junior development team! I still have no idea what I'm doing, but they want me to familiarize myself with SQL, C#, MVC, etc. by next year. I'm super excited. I know yall dont give a fuck but this is awesome news for me.

@GarrettChan Geek Squad has such a bad reputation in our country because some Best Buys hire idiots who don't know what they're doing. We also had stupid deadlines we had to meet by corporate and a lot of super strict SOP where there was stuff we couldn't do. I remember I got written up for opening a laptop to get the HDD out and check for data because I used a pry tool that wasn't "Geek Squad approved". I can't complain though because it got me the professional experience I needed for this job.
Not sure what you're doing for work right now but it might be worth looking into if you're into that shit. It's a super easy start.

LOL! There's a tractor mechanic who lives near my parents' farm... On his door, he has a sign that reads:
$50 to fix your tractor
$60 if you watch
$80 if you worked on it first
Not really related... just thought of it because you mentioned fixing your own computer. :-P
-
Hmm... Interesting, so I should probably stick to fixing my computer by myself. I don't have a job right now since I'm still in school. I am going to look for one in the next year. Well, I think my 2.5 year experience of Java and DB related stuff can help me pretty well in looking for a job in California Bay Area.

tfw you wanna play Sunlust because it's such a beautiful WAD but can't beat all of the levels...

@leodoom85, maybe you should take your time to think about the subject a little longer before simply writing anything, just because.
Learning curve has nothing to do with it, because the moment you resort to OPopie-weapons mod, or dial down the difficulty, you already capped the learning curve, if not ruined it. On top of that, the advice Phade102 gave, "player the easier maps until you can beat harder ones" is the worst possible advice you can possibly give, because SunLust needs to be practiced on a map by map basis. Let alone that there is virtually no learning curve to be had when people practice stuff they already can do.
More often than not, the reason people learn at a different place is that people employ bad practice routines, or give other people bad advice at how to get better, as is clearly the case here.
-
I'm sure I could finish it with enough practice, but the problem I have with running maps of that difficulty is that I lack persistence. I get annoyed when I'm doing everything right and get hit in the back with a stray cyberdemon rocket from across the map or the archvile horde doesn't infight and instead all go for me.
-
Practice is one thing but the patience can betray you :(
And, @Nine Inch Heels, I'm agree with you in this one.

Depression is a bitch.

I apologize for the delay in uploads for my SoD playthrough on YouTube. MAP07 is actually kinda tough without using BFG (which is what I was kinda going for). It's much easier with BFG spam but I'm not sure if I wanna do that just yet :p
I will try to get one up either tonight or tomorrow morning!

True, my goal is one, but I just don't want to get back, so I went on. I'm 5/7 on Moltres because Team Instinct sucks. I didn't bother get good IV on Articunos (got 2 and both are lower than 80% IV), but I got a 14/15/15 Moltres, and I am very satisfied. Well, if we can actually meet in the future, that's one more thing we can share, f some raid bosses together (I mean FIGHT, not F@ck) ;P
-
I had three 90%+ Moltres, four 90%+ Lugias, and three 90%+ Articunos run off on me. 10 wasted raid passes :( I think it's because I'm too underleveled and haven't gotten the gold medals for the types yet to help with my catch rate lol
-
Well, Lugia has a lower base rate of 2%. Even you can reliably throw a Great Curve Ball, you still only get around 9% with gold badge, so it's pretty normal. It's said that there's a bug, use a Nanab, then Golden Razz back and forth to increase catch rate. Although as a former programmer, I don't really believe this, I would try it out when Zapdos is here.

If I ever finish my LP of Speed of Doom, I will be doing Going Down (unless a new @skillsaw WAD comes out of nowhere like Ancient Aliens did). If I do, I'll 100% be using @A_D_M_E_R_A_L's QoL mod since I've been telling myself I'd use that for the last two years. I don't trust the D10 like I did last time :p

If you want a good HUD to use you should try NC HUD by @Blue Shadow. It's my favorite custom HUD and it shows everything you could ever need to see.
-
Also speaking of QoL type mods, I made a couple tiny WADs that I use regularly when I play GZDoom these days when playing WADs that use vanilla Doom stuff.
Blood Fixer: https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=56045
Smooth Weapons: https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=32628&p=1020095#p1020095
And of course I also use the HUD I posted above in combination. I'd be interested in seeing what @A_D_M_E_R_A_L's mod is too. I love QoL type mods, they really make Doom more fluid and enjoyable than ever without changing the game's mechanics.
-
What in the fuck is this MAP32 of Speed of Doom? There's no space to even walk. I've never felt so claustrophobic in my life. Nowhere is safe.

This is what you got after you said Joshy's maps are bad ;P Anyway, good luck.
-
Only the beginning area was actually difficult for me. The rest is just save scumming and trial and error. Remember Stru, you are allowed to save. :)
-
We did warned you at the start that some maps are slaughterfests, you're in for quite a treat.
-
Any software engineers or developers out there? I need to design my own application in C# that read and writes to a database I create so I can get promoted at my job.
Not only do I lack the creativity, but I also lack the experience. What are the best resources to get started on this kinda stuff?

SQL is pretty straightforward. My job is currently working on fully transitioning over to web products vs. desktop applications. They're using a combination of HTML5, ASP.NET MVC, and a bunch of other shit I don't quite understand yet. I'm not looking to be a web developer right away, but getting this jump on building a DB and having a desktop app interact with it is the main thing I need to move up :o

Hey Ling! Haven't heard from you in a while, hope all is well.

Yup! I'm going back to uni again in January. Things have been good lately as well. I also noticed that you don't seem to be active on Facebook anymore. I'm still doing my YouTube, but I also get paid to do my let's plays and such. For the past couple weeks I've barely had a social life because my YouTube's having its 10h anniversary on the 22nd of December, so I've been working my @$$ around the clock and even pulled off several all-nighters to beat really difficult wad in Doom, such as Ribbiks' wad Frog and Toilet of The Gods. I even made my first customized map for Doom 2 as well. So other than that I've been getting involved around my uni as well as the Greek community, and oh yes, have made lots of new friends as well.
So asides from work, what else have you been up to? Did you do anything exciting since the last time we chatted?
-
I just realized I never uploaded my SoD MAP15 video. I've had that recorded for about a week. I should probably do that tonight.

C'mon mang. I always enjoy watching how you tackle the maps, and will probably embarrass me when I see an obvious thing I missed that would have made the map easier. Like for instance the AV jump... had no idea so I had already cleared the map. I ended up summoning another Arch-Vile to jump with lol.

Pokemon Go Raids are seriously one of the greatest things to happen in so long. It's turning real life into an MMO and it's hilarious. I've spent the evening driving around the state with a bunch of total strangers taking on legendary raids all around. AND IT'S SO DAMN ORGANIZED. There were actual guild leaders separating us in groups to take on Lugia and Articuno. And it was awesome seeing everyone work together. Seriously, people who would often hate each other and bully each other were hugging each other after one of them caught a legendary. People of all ages (there were people in their 50s raiding with us), people of all backgrounds, races, cultures, etc. all coming together to tap their phone screens. It was beautiful.

I agree with @GarrettChan. It gives me a reason to leave my house and socialize. Not saying it's the best game ever because yeah, Niantic really isn't the greatest. BUT, the raiding system is pretty damn good and being able to organize 20 people in one simultaneous fight is really cool. Yeah, the combat system sucks but that's because they don't have the rights to a turn-based combat system like the classic Pokemon games.
I'm kinda scared to see what PvP is gonna do. We're gonna see gang wars erupt on the streets.

I love tatsurd's video descriptions on YouTube. "This is a play video of Doom which is a video game. Please check my channel! You can see more my doom videos." So wholesome :)

His videos were how I discovered the PC version of Doom, completely mindblowing to find out that Plutonia had a whopping 32 levels and not 6 like I thought! There was even a Plutonia 2 that I never knew existed! Crazy, right?
-
@Eris Falling both tatsurd and @Ancalagon were my first experiences with "wait theres more than just UltDoom, DoomII, Plutonia, and TNT?"
-
Over the weekend, I met Jerome Flynn who plays Bronn in Game of Thrones. He was so damn cool. I also met Julian Glover who plays Grand Maester Pycelle in GoT, who was old as shit but one of the funniest guys I've ever met.
I also learned that conventions are much more enjoyable going by yourself, so that way you don't have other people holding you back from doing what you wanna do. I spent 4 hours on a tabletop war game, but it was worth every second.
-
Winter is here Jon Snow.
-
I agree absolutely. I prefer to go to conventions on my own, so you dont have friends saying "LEts go do this" You can go where you want.
-
If you have a friend who understands how to deal with hobby differences, that would be different. To be honest, I like going with 2, and we can go to places with common interests, and split up doing whatever we like individually. However, this doesn't work more than 2 though.

So yeah, last night was rough. On top of getting what seems to be the flu and practically working myself to death, my gf and I had a violent separation and I'm currently in the process of relocating. I've got a few people who are willing to take me in while I get more money saved for an apartment, but just wanted to give yall an update as to why I haven't touched my YT channel in a couple of weeks. Bear with me, guys!
-
Get well :)
-
Wow, hard times man! :-( Sorry to hear it...
-
More GF problems? Sounds like it's time to focus on yourself for a while to get your shit together. You'd have more money for yourself too. :)
No worries about the lack of uploads, if there's a valid reason there's no need to apologize. Stuff like you're describing always takes first priority. Hang in there.
-
-
You giving PoE 3.1 a shot? VP got nerfed and moved :p
-
I always complain that I have no money but I just spent $350 on airsoft stuff. Maybe actually leaving my house will be worth the money?
-
YES! Got the approval to run a cable line to the house I'm staying at, so I can get back to uploading. I might try to record a bunch of videos over the next week or two and then just mass upload a ton of shit to my YT channel once that gets installed.

Your username sounds like an automatically generated GFYCat URL

Jimmy! I was wondering what software you use for MIDI production? I've fiddled with FL Studio but I can't figure out how to change the velocity or volume of specific notes/instruments in the final mixdown. I just don't think FL Studio has that capability.
-
@stru, even FL studio 3 (back then known as "fruity loops" IIRC) had these things in it. Also, this forum's search function may have helped a bit, because the "What MIDI editor do you use?" shows up every so often: Click here
-
Thanks for that, dude. I'll play around with those when I can and see. I was just interested in what Jimmy uses though. And if it is FL, I couldn't figure out how to get the velocity adjustments in the final .midi. It'd play it back just fine in the software but the mixdown has no dynamic volume on the tones as I adjusted it in the software so I must be missing something

[Am I the only one who...] doesn't enjoy Cards against Humanity?
This game has 35000 5-star reviews on Amazon alone. I just didn't enjoy it. It was fun the first time, and then each time after that gets a LOT less enjoyable. The first time it's just like "PENIS!! XDDDDD!! LULZ" and then afterwards it's just an awkward giggle while you pretend you didn't see the penis card before. It's also tough because the chances of someone having the same sense of humor as you is pretty damn slim (at least from my experiences).
-
Yes, you're the only one in the entire world who doesn't enjoy it. How do you feel now?
-
I think part of it is about catering your sense of humor to someone else's. You're not trying to make yourself laugh.
If someone thinks Little Big Horn is a juvenile Ovis canadensis, then you're probably not going to get a laugh from a pun about a Custer Donut.
I've had fun playing it. I've never purchased it, but from time to time people will have it at a one off party.
I'm sure there are a lot of people who don't like it, but a lot of it depends on the people playing.
