  1. I forgot to let you guys know about my next Let's Play project... for... There are five episodes, so I should be doing this all month. Heretic - Shadow of the Serpent Riders Released in 1994 by Raven Software The Back Story: The world of Parthoris was populated by many people who divided themselves into seven great nations, as well as the mystic Sidhe elves. It was these elves who kept the Tomes of Power and the sacred candle flames which eternally burned to represent the armies of the world. The Sidhe believed in a prophecy of Armageddon, and their prophecy ultimately proved itself true when from the east came the three terrible Serpent Riders cloaked in black. They were great sorcerers, and they demonstrated their power by quelling the wars of the eastern provinces. Soon the men of the seven nations turned to their worship and built a great temple in their honor. Upon the temple was the Sign, a crossed trident, and the worshipers came to call themselves the Order of the Sign. The deeper into reverence of the Riders' dark ways they fell, the more they were sapped of their free will and spirit. Once all of the seven realms were theirs, the two eldest Riders departed, leaving D'Sparil alone to prepare the world for destruction. Recognizing the fulfillment of prophecy, the Sidhe refused to follow in the worship of D'Sparil and thus they were set apart from the other people of the world. Once sacred guardians, they were now heretics, hunted and hated everywhere they went. D'Sparil's disciples turned the minds of the seven kings toward conquest of the Sidhe realm, and when the Seven Armies marched upon them, the Sidhe Elders extinguished the sacred flames, destroying them all. D'Sparil was enraged and in the chamber of the Elders he stirred up a storm of white-hot flame, killing them all. The earth burst open beneath their charred bodies and from within poured legions of the undead as well as murderous beasts from worlds beyond. This new army overwhelmed the Sidhe and slaughtered them in untold numbers. In only one day, their civilization was destroyed and their survivors were scattered far and wide. The darkling creatures had carried off the Tomes of Power and the other artifacts of the Sidhe as spoils of war. Left defenseless, it was surely only a matter of time before all Sidhe perished under the Order of the Triad's unyielding fury. Most of the few remaining Sidhe hid themselves away, but Corvus was determined to have revenge. Heading east into the wilderness he came upon the City of the Damned, where the very air reeked with rot and decay and the only sounds were the screams of foul creatures seeking his blood. Armed only with his staff and Elven Wand, he had little hope to survive. So began the downfall of D'Sparil and the salvation of Parthoris. The Game: Using the same graphics engine as Doom, but with added enhancements, Heretic places the player in a medieval atmosphere rife with monsters, magic, and mayhem. I will be doing live commentary, and I will be using the GZDoom port. Also, I'm open to co-commentary if anyone wants to join in on their favorite level - although I'm not 100% sure yet how I'll set that up. Difficulty Level: Just to clarify - there are two reasons why I did NOT choose the 5th difficulty level and stuck with "Thou Art a Smite-meister"...It disables cheats. There may be some levels where I'll want to noclip after they're done to display little known things about the design I find interesting. There are also a couple of funny things regarding cheat codes as well. I will not cheat to beat the game, though. I don't want to fly through the levels. This is not a speed run. This is not a race. Also, I do not wish to fly through the levels simply because people who've never played the game before will be lost and will have no clue where I am. This is why I bring up the map so often. It's for my benefit as well as your own. There are plenty of speed run videos out there of this game with or without commentary. This isn't going to be one. Let's Play Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders

I found it was visually an amazing game for 1994. The only things I didn't like were the enemies and the weapons, as it seemed they could have been a little better. The levels themselves were amazing - both VERY challenging in spots, and relaxing in others. I just wish there were more pwads and wad packs for Heretic.

I wasn't aware, thanks. But, in the last level, one cannot afford to really be too choosy. I had the best luck just praying and spraying.

Herpaderp. Thanks for the correction! Let's see if it sticks. For some strange reason I can never remember the names of these things.

The sound was correct in E4M3, but sometimes it's my 2nd or 3rd runthrough so my commentary can be a bit predictive. Part 031 - E4M4: The Sepulcher

Thanks. That was a #*(&$ to finish but I made it. The next few levels don't seem to be so bad so far. I was on the fence about the texture pack. If I played the game without recording it I'd probably stick to the old textures, but the contrast with the new textures is good enough that it makes the videos better - so I might stick with it until the end of episode 5.

Let's Play Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders

I had to do some save scrumming, and it took about an hour to record, but I finally made it through E4M1 with 100% kills at difficulty level of 4. The entire level took 33 minutes so I may do some editing. I think I'll survive in the next level. Maybe. If not, then I'll switch the difficulty offscreen or something. Phew. I'll upload the video either tonight or in the morning.

Thanks for the replies. A few points. * I tried the gauntlets with the tome of power against a Maulotaur in E2M8 and couldn't remember if it was enough to kill him, or maybe the one behind me got me after he was killed - but the stunt killed me. I'd rather save the Tome for the next level since I can carry it with me. * In my practice runs, I never had any consistent luck getting the sabreclaws or the gargoyles to go through the crusher, so I'd rather not rely on it that much. It'd be nice but it's hard to predict where they'll go. * I'd also like to save the morph ovum. In one of my test runs, I got very lucky and got two extra morph ovums from Iron Liches, but I cannot rely on that either. As it stands, I think I'm going to avoid the Iron Liches and the final Maulotaur as much as possible - scavenge all the ammo I can, and forget the kill count. Even if I get 100% kills, I'll be walking into E4M2 with very little ammo and artifacts and that's not too appealing. I'll give a little more practice for the next 24 hours or so then make my decision then with the next video. The way that episode is making me feel I might as well overlay "In Da Godda Da Vida" in the background and go balls to the wall. Who knows.

Let's Play Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders

I do NOT want to cheat at all to finish the level. That would also throw off the ammo count for the rest of the game. The thing is, I've done 2 test 'completions', and I always end up with Ophidians near the end of the level, with few arrows left and I still have to deal with the Maulotaur. Plus, the overabundance of the Hellfire Staff doesn't help when the Maulotaur is 50% immune to the staff with the tome of power. So regardless, I never have enough to finish off all of the enemies and all I can do is find the exit. Another option would be to just 'complete' the map without 100% kills, get as much ammo as I can, and not worry about the kill count. That's risky though, and it commits me to playing the rest of the episode at a difficulty setting of 4.

Let's Play Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders

I attempted recording E4M1 several times on the 4th difficulty level and although I made it to the end, I never had enough ammo to get rid of all of the monsters. Further, the difficulty level is hard enough that I have only a few options. I don't think I'll have a month to practice the game to get good enough to tackle episodes 4 and 5 at the 4th difficulty setting. No matter how well I try to play, I always run out of ammo and I'm unable to finish the very last enemy in E4M1. I don't have the skills enough to complete the final two episodes at that difficulty level. So, I can either cheat by starting out with as much ammo and weapons as possible (I don't like this idea) or use the 1st or 2nd difficulty setting. It's no longer enjoyable for me at this difficulty setting, and I'd hate to end the LP right here, but after trying to practice E4M1 for three days straight I simply don't have the ability to finish it at the higher difficulty setting. Let me know what you guys think.
