    This thread do be hilarious though. Imagine if a long-renowned band, maybe one instrumental to the creation and development of a whole genre, reform and produce an album. It's a little old-fashioned and only uses a few modern recording tricks, but that's okay because it's more or less still in the flavour of their old work. Y'know, as if the original four members of Black Sabbath recorded a new studio album and it's authentic enough that you could almost mistake it for a successor to Sabotage, fitting right in there sonically before Technical Ecstasy. Now imagine that some kid complains that they have the audacity to ask money for it (and its special edition box with all kinds of extra stuff) because, well, there's so much music out there released for free on BandCamp and SoundCloud and it's better*. Anywho, that's some of the SIGIL 2 discourse going on here. *; subjectively so, but they're going to throw around the word 'objective' as if doing so magically turns their opinion on any given matter into The Facts™

    I did an experiment in one of my maps, E2M3 of The Becoming. The map is entirely monsterless* until after the red key is collected (save for a solitary spectre at the beginning whose sole purpose is to get the player waking up some teleporter monster caches in the void); after which it's populated with like a dozen spectres. When I've watched players on this map, I see them basically study the geometry and notice thing; stuff I've put there, on purpose, to tell something of a narrative of this haunted techbase warehouse. They notice, probably because the absence of monsters lets their brain do so. For an experiment it turned out to be almost-universally praised as the best map in The Becoming, as well!

    It's got a handful of custom textures, including a rock face that's a bit more tasteful than DOOM's stock SP_ROCK. If you've got to be such a misery guts, at least get your whining straight.
  7. It's for this exact reason that, way back when, I used it for the MAP06 music in my early WAD Murderous Intent. (which, as an aside, isn't worth bothering with) It kicks ass and it's such a shame that a lot of players probably haven't heard the tune in its entirety due to (probably) mashing the space bar to enter the next map.

    I don't think I've ever not loved either Plutonia 2 nor the original PRCP. It was just that one map of PRCP2, probably caught me on a bad day. It happens.

    Well, y'know, I kinda really mean somewhere I'm not going to be beholden to rightwing or "centrist" chuds whinging about not being 'allowed' to use slurs in would-be polite conversation. It's a small ask, I would've thought, but you'd be surprised sometimes.

    This thread turning into a show of thanks to the moderators here? Unexpected, but hell yeah I'm here for it. I think moderators are the unsung hero of a long-lasting community such as this one, and definitely one of the main reasons said community has lasted and indeed outlasted almost every game/modding community one can think of. Guys, if you read this, you are appreciated.

    Although not a moderator here, I've modded a couple of places here and there on the Internet for short times. It's exhausting, like trying to keep a cage of hyperactive chimpanzees clean when they're intent on shitting up the walls and then in the same breath complaining that the place stinks. Also it's a pretty fucking thankless task overall and this adds to the exhaustion, especially for someone who is as prone to burnout as I.

    I mix it up with concepts. People tend to whine and call these things 'gimmicks', but they're wrong and don't deserve videogames. Stuff like "what if you had to get as far as possible without shooting and waking up all the super-dangerous monsters" or "the whole map is deserted until you get the key" or platforming or something like that. People will complain, as I say, but let 'em. IMO variety in a mapset is infinitely more important than trying to please everyone all the time; an impossibility in and of itself anyway.

  20. Oh, for sure. Lost Souls being the thorn in the side of many DOOMer means they're a much better-designed monster than people realise.
  21. This talk of Lost Souls makes me think of an actual serious thing I'd like to have influenced with the development of DOOM; more flying enemy types. They're versatile as all hell IMO, and something I've been sorely aching for when making Ultimate DOOM maps of late.

  23. I mean, they don't. Nobody's ever stopped mappers from doing otherwise, and I can't even pretend to understand why it seems to be 'the thing to do', but I'm very tempted to one day make a megaWAD of 32 IoS fights just because.
