It was actually answered, though with a two page delay.

wwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp Guess that's it for me, then? I realise it's kinda silly of me to be saying that considering that despite me making a whole point of asking about multi-segment runs way back in... April?.. and then never actually making one, there were reasons why I asked this... and this month's second run, despite being ruled unofficial, was nonetheless a wonderful reminder as to why exactly you should take breaks when your shitty ass health tells you to, and not be like "but I haven't even been to intermission screen, I can totally tough it out!". Yeah, right, that went so well.

Go watch the end of my second VOD and observe me getting Absolutely Flapped by the cyberdemon I knew was there but simply arrived in too foggy state of a mind to adequately deal with. Endurance runs are not my thing, natch.

Dang. I know I said I don't really care, and I 100% meant it for category, but with the DNF ruling, I've kinda self-imposed a score goal here... muh score The thing here is. I had an UPS. But recently a friend asked if he could borrow it for his computer in his house in the countryside with shitty ass faulty power lines and no surge protection or however that's actually called, and I thought, like, I'm in the middle of the city, the last power outage was years ago, paranoia has limits, yah? And then two power outages happened in the same day. The first one happened before the Ironman, and I suppose I should have taken it as a Sign, but I've already had postponed my run from the announced date due to personal reasons, and I thought it would be dumb to postpone it even further because "lol hexa scared of a power outage". I ain't living in some backwater, these things don't come twice in a row, right?! Well. This run was educational, if nothing else. also even with the dnf I still beat NaZa, HA!

Oh kay. So here I am, minding my own business, trying to solve the omega outpost puzzle, then, you know what happens? A power outage happens. Seriously. Like. C'mon. I don't really know if this is within the rules, but fortunately I was playing on gzdoom, which makes autosaves. Not content with getting fucked over by a power outage on the outpost, I decided to just load the map06's autosave and keep going from there, because by fuck I was going to survive or be defeated in fair combat! ... Well, it was the latter one. Here is my first VOD. This is where I reach map06 in 34:17, then DNF due to power outage. Here is my second VOD. This is where I load map06's autosave, reach map11 in 76:53(total gametime starting from map01), then get killed. The moral of the story here is that when you start feeling loopy and spacing out, you pop a save and take a break, not be like "yo I can stay for a couple more levels". Garbage, is what my death is. Still, it's my own fault at least. Category... well. Initially this was going to be a category 2; I never played D64D2, but I played the actual Doom 64. However, following Eris' death, an argument erupted on one of the servers I was on regarding whether the trap he fell to was fair or not. I've decided to go and check the trap out for myself to decide how different it was from the vanilla D64 trap and compare. I feel like this is still category 2, since I only looked at a small portion of the wad, and the intent was not to gain an advantage but just to settle an argument. Nonetheless, I recognise that this is a significant gray area even before the power outage happened(which effectively granted me pre-knowledge for a good portion of map06, even through no fault of my own). I'm not really willing to debate the issue, and it's not like I'm married to my cats, so I'm just going to call in the referee. I still feel this is cat 2, but if Alfonzo comes and says "no u" and jots me as cat 3, then So Be It. Similarly, if he decides to disqualify my second VOD and just jot me down as a DNF on map06, then also So Be It. Here are my runs. I tried, I finished one way or another. Now I'm tired and done, and if you excuse me, I'm gonna go back to Touhou.

Eyyyy you got to map06, that's better than quite a bit of people so far. Not a completely bad result. Heavens know people had worse first showings. 50 monsters april derp Ultimately what matters most is that you survive. If you get to the end, you're good, even if it took you twelve eternities. 100%ing is usually good for this: secrets are always useful, and killing monsters now means they won't mess you up later. Some areas do have too low gain to time and effort cost ratio, and therefore best skipped, but unless you're familiar with the set, eyeballing such things is difficult, so might as well just default to killing everything, aye?

The real stupid part is that this trap isn't even instakill in the vanilla game, so anybody who played it, sees the new puzzle, is trying for a good time, and can't immediately spot the clue might just think "Hey, I remember this trap, it only did like 20 damage and I'm stacked on health, I should be fine if I just press randomly!". And then you die. Hell, as questionable as doom64 level design was, I can't remember any single instance of an insta-kill trap of any kind in the entirety of it save for Hectic, which is a super secret level and noted to be deliberately unfair. So coming from that here, having an insta-kill puzzle sprung on you on the very second level is... jarring, to say the least.

The trap is not lethal in vanilla doom 64. On a wrong guess, you get fastcrushed for 20 damage. That is all.

EDIT EDIT: OKAY WHOOPS NEVERMIND DNF WAS CAUSED BY ME USING KILL MONSTERS RESUME NORMAL OPERATION though the trap in question is significantly unfair. because of this, I will provide you with a spoiler.
  10. Just on my recent memory alone, that makes the second victim to crash by alt-tab. Maybe people shouldn't do that while doing ironman. cept i can't do that on stream because i kinda need to alt-tab to chat. well, shite.
  11. Strong disagree. While it's true that the peanut gallery in the livestream can give you an advantage, it definitely does not constitute a category higher than 3. If we compare two players, one who has personally played the maps in question and is familiar with what is to come, and another player who has never played the maps but has a written walkthrough on their lap, the first player definitely has the advantage. Personally experiencing is far better than just being told.
  12. While I do have the same "not true ironman" sentiment about prepared runs, I have to admit that this is ultimately a competition(even if not entirely a serious one), and allowing prepared runs serves as an... equaliser of sorts. After all, even if we ban prepared runs and everyone actually agrees and honours this rule(good luck actually enforcing this, hah!), there is still an enormous amount of difference between "i've literally never played or even heard of this wad before" and "wow hi I played this literally yesterday, what are the odds huh?". What are we going to do? Ask players to pretend they don't know about the traps they know are there? Or have everyone scan doomworld for every wad, ever, and play all of them in hopes of maximising the odds that whatever Alfonzo picks will be something familiar to you? FWIW when someone on a certain discord server said something to an effect of "not a lot of people do unprepared runs these days", I checked the Rush ironman table real quick(which is the last table that is actually complete...), and it clocks at 8 prepared runs to 14 blind and 14 familiar runs, so it still seems the vast majority of players do unprepared runs. Granted, it should be noted that if we only look at the upper half of the table, the counts become 3 blind 9 familiar and 6 prepared runs, so those who prepare do have a somewhat higher degree of success... on the other hand, to my memory, Krypto never prepares and still has more ironman victories than literally everyone else combined.
  13. fun fact: 27 is by far my favourite number funnier fact: this is, overall, the 27th official ironman challenge funniest fact: HAHAHA I SURVIVED GTFO NAZA THE KUP IS MINE The run can be viewed here, this time it was a live stream. You can see it was my first stream by me overall having no idea what I'm doing. Also lag, wooh. I might have to consider going back to prboom for future streams since my computer is clearly inadequate for streaming complex maps on gzdoom. Category 2. I'd say it's more like category 1.5 due to how many years have passed since I last played, but that's not an actual category... so two felines it is then. Interstellar Stickness was cleared in 23:18, with 325/328 monsters killed. Shazam's Device was cleared in 30:31, with 306/309 monsters killed. Total: 53:50, 631/637 dead. Time for @Steve D to find his inner Krypto and stomp my face in the dust.
