  3. Sup. Okay, so it's not exactly a new car, so much as it is new to me... but hell, the damn thing is far newer than I would have previously seen myself owning.

It's a 2008 Nissan Altima SE (3.5L V6), and if you ask me it's absolutely gorgeous. This is the first automobile I've ever purchased and owned on my own. My previous vehicle (A 1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE) had essentially been disowned by my dad and, while functional, had fallen into disrepair and is physically not in very good shape. So yeah, I'd say this is a pretty big step up.

    I'm pretty stoked about it.

I uh... I have no idea what it is to have easy access to such powerful wheels. A 3.5L V6 engine is the realm of €75K+ cars around here, but over there it's run-of-the-mill... Then you waste all that power with an autoshifter :)

My ride's a 1.2L, 75HP 2003 Honda Jazz and it's so snappy I feel like I can kill myself anytime I want to. It's also damn comfortable and practical - I want to keep it for as long as it's reasonable.

Off the line, the automatic has more power.
Manuals have more power through the gears, but of course that doesn't matter because we have speed limits.

On second look, this car should have CVT - giving it the ability to run at peak power (or peak efficiency) 100% of the time - which makes it superior to manual.

  4. Yeah, so I guess I'm one year older today than I was same time last year. A lot has changed since then.. still kinda weird to think about, seeing as the last couple of years prior have been pretty stagnant in comparison. I'm still undecided as to whether or not it's all been for the better, but at least I'm moving forward.

    In the last year, I've...

    • Bettered myself physically, creatively, and socially
    • Broken ties with important people in my life, and made many new ones
    • Got a drum kit and have been loving the hell out of it
    • Done something I feel goes against everything I stand for as a person
    • Had fun doing it
    • Started drinking, something I've always had a vendetta against in the past
    • Done a ton of other shit that I probably wouldn't have normally done before
So yeah, overall... I give the year of Matthew Age 21 seven golden drum kits out of ten. Here's hoping I live to see the age of 23.

  5. Yeah my computer got totally fried somehow, so I've decided to just say fuck it and build a new one (assuming I can get the funds together). So... here's what I had in mind:

    code:
    Array
It's going to be a pretty lean machine if I do say so myself. I'm not necessarily building it to be an extreme gaming rig so much as I'm building it for, well.. just being hella fast so I can do my design stuff with as little slowdown as possible. That's not to say this won't be totally kickass for gaming, seeing as my existing machine could already run just about everything out there at highest settings (unless we bring 500x AA into the equation or other stupid crap like that).

That being said, it's going to be preeeetty expensive, and I'm kind of tight on funds at the moment, so in the meantime I'm just going to be using the media center PC I have hooked up to my TV for the time being.

For comparison's sake, here's the specs of my now deceased primary PC:
    code:
    Array

Which is how long, exactly? With what OS?

I've got several HDs nearing a decade of daily use which also have exactly 0 problems (of course, having worked in tech support I saw my share of premature failures, too).

100000 or 1000000 writes per block are not really that much, especially if using FAT32 or NTFS, which tend to grind and wear on the same areas of the disk all the time, and in OSes like Windows XP you have to do a lot of tweaks to actually make then usable with SSDs.

Edit: Heh, 100000 or 1000000 are really very optimistic. Check out this interesting forum article where someone nitpicks a SSD's S.M.A.R.T. report.

CrystalDiskInfo reports 396 power cycles and 3535 hours of usage so far, with around 1.5 Tb of data written to it. Unfortunately the SMART data it reads is pretty vague, and not nearly as informative as the data from the article. OS is Windows 7 x64, though I've used it with Vista x64 for a short while.

I was reminded of one drawback though; if you write lots of large files often (i.e. sequential writing), the Intel SSD will only be as good as your average 7200 RPM drive, doing maybe 80 mbit\s at best. So for video editing or huge Photoshop works or whatnot I'd either use a RAID 0 setup or get an SSD which boasts higher sequential write rates (OCZ Vertex for example).

  6. Yeah, so my girlfriend of 2 years broke up with me on Sunday night, and I feel like total shit because I really was starting to feel like our relationship could have been going somewhere further.

I've been given a lot of reasons as to why she broke up with me, chief among them being that I have on many occasions had a negative attitude, almost bordering on cynical. I feel like if she had communicated her problems to me, we could have worked all of that out. Still, she doesn't want to try and work things out and after giving me a bunch of bullshit excuses (in my opinion), she finally reveals to me that she likes somebody else. Honestly, I'm insulted. She'd much rather try and hook up with somebody she's only known for 3 months and doesn't even know at all than try and work things out with the person she knows loves her for exactly who she is and would do just about anything for.

So in a lot of regards, I'm extremely conflicted as to what I should do. I feel like she's my best friend, and she's the only one who truly understands me for who I am. I still want her in my life, and she still wants to be close friends, but I feel like if that's how things are going to be, I'm just going to be sitting and watching as she goes off with some other guy and it's going to slowly kill me inside. What's worse is that I feel like I had finally managed to bond with her family and feel like a part of someone else's family a few weeks ago and now I'm essentially being excommunicated.

I really don't know what to do. The chief advice people have been giving me is to just let it go and start introducing myself to other people, but at this point I don't know if I can bring myself to do that. I don't think people really understand how much our relationship meant to me, and expecting me to just "let it go" over a short period of time is absurd if you ask me. I don't think I could bring myself to try and be in another relationship for quite some time.

Sorry for the emo rant, and I know Doomworld isn't exactly the best place for this kind of shit, but... whatever.

I can tell you right now that close-friend stuff is horse shit. Same thing happened to me (my girlfriend of 1.5 years) and all it got me was some very awkward visits, some bullshit drama I didn't care about, and meeting 50 other douchbags that dated her. Like everyone else said in this thread, as painful as it is, maybe you should consider just moving on. I'm sorry to hear about all this, and I know it must suck.

  7. So I decided maybe it'd be a good time to invest in a decent acoustic drum kit. I had previously been playing on a cheap-o electronic drum kit from Alesis, which has been a less than stellar experience for me... the pads had very lousy rebound which only got worse as time wore on, the cymbals that came with it were either not sensitive enough or too sensitive in that one cymbal would only recognize really hard hits while the other would trigger multiple times from one hit, the bass drum pedal started to stick after a while, and the list goes on. But I guess I got what I paid for, and it made due for a good while.

Anyway, rather than shell out a shit ton of cash for a decent electronic kit, I decided to finally get a good acoustic kit to bang on, for a couple of obvious reasons. First and foremost, I really don't dig the sound of even the highest end electronic kits... sounds much too robotic, even with 500 different drum instruments programmed into them. Also, a good acoustic kit cost me a lot less than it would have cost me to get an okay electronic kit. Soooo, what I got was a TAMA 6-piece kit (1 bass drum, 1 snare, 2 rack toms, and 2 floor toms) and a basic cymbal set (hi-hat, crash, ride, and an extra splash). I'd say that just about does the job quite nicely, especially compared to the junkheap I was playing before.

*Ahem* So I just finished putting everything together and getting all the drums tuned (which I previously had no experience doing as you obviously don't need to tune an electric drum, so that was a fun learning experience). All that really needs to be done now is to move a couple of things around and do some final adjustments on everything. But other than that, it's awesome. Here's a couple pics I just snapped on my shitty camera phone:

I am quite happy with my purchase.

My drumming experience is in a distant past, mainly because of lack of perseverance on my side. I wouldn't bother writing in your blog hadn't you write an unexpected PM some months ago... Well I don't own anything related to drums now, except... two books with progressive rock tunes scores for drums, Bill Bruford's When in doubt, roll! and Carl Palmer's Applied Rhythms. Obviously I can't sell them to you nor to anyone (too precious) and I can't make a copy (for copyright reasons). But if there's something I can do for you (perhaps scanning a sample page of each one is not illegal? no clue) regarding these books, I'd be glad to do so.

Anything pertaining to Bill Bruford is obviously of great interest to me. He's definitely one of my favorite drummers, along with Gavin Harrison. :P

I hope you practice to click.

I do, regularly. Obviously the most important part of drumming is being able to keep time, so anyone who doesn't regularly practice to a metronome isn't fit to be a drummer in my book. No human being can magically keep a beat without regular practice.

The cymbal next to the hi-hat is a 10" splash cymbal, for added effect. Yeah, if I do any expansions to the kit later on I'd probably add some more cymbals or replace the ones that came with it with some nice Zildjian cymbals. :D

  8. Sometimes I feel as though I'm on a pointless journey here. I've been searching for years for a decent gamepad to use on my PC, and with every single option I've tried so far I've been met with nothing but annoyances. Is it really so much to ask for a good wireless controller that doesn't feel like it's made of cheap plastic and have a fully functioning d-pad and analog sticks?

So here's what I've tried so far:

    • Built for PC gamepads. I've tried several gamepads made specifically for PC over the years, and all of them have suffered from at least one crippling issue. The most common being a badly constructed d-pad that doesn't function properly (you wanna go right, huh? well, good luck doing that without also going diagonally too!) If the d-pad is tolerable, it's the analog sticks that are a problem. For the love of god, who the hell thought it'd be a good idea to build round analog sticks into a SQUARE hole? Not to mention that in comparison with most first party console controllers, PC gamepads almost always feel like they're made of cheap plastic.

    • Playstation 2 to USB Adapters. Theoretically a fantastic idea. Sony's Playstation controllers are probably the most well designed and functional controllers I've ever used. Unfortunately, I've tried a couple of different PS2-USB adapters and both of them were anything but useful. Both of the adapters I picked up had problems with the controller ports, where one of them would intermittently work, or if you decided you wanted to use two controllers at the same time one of the controller ports would decide to crap out on you, so you'd only be able to use one controller at a time.

    • XBOX 360 Controller. This is what EVERYONE recommends I do. I've tried it, and I've gotta tell you it's great aside from one crippling flaw. The XBOX 360 controller has THE WORST d-pad ever to grace a 1st party game controller. What the fuck were they thinking? Sometimes I feel as though the d-pad in that controller has a mechanism inside of it that triggers random directions whenever you touch it, just to fuck with you. Now, there's several guides on the interwebs about how you can remedy this issue, but I don't think I want to risk wasting $50 tearing apart a controller and using some sandpaper on a d-pad only to end up breaking it in the process.

    • Playstation 3 Dualshock Drivers. This is my most recent (and most successful endeavor). Being that Sony sucks all kind of ass with their proprietary hardware that only works with other Sony hardware, they couldn't be bothered to write a simple driver to use the Playstation 3 Dualshock controller in Windows. So of course that means that there's some shoddily developed drivers floating around the internet developed by a third party. I had to jump through all sorts of hoops to get them to work, especially since I'm running Windows 7 x64, which doesn't play too nicely with unsigned drivers. I did eventually manage to get my PS3 controllers to work, but of course there's a couple of really annoying downsides. First and foremost, I couldn't get bluetooth connection to work so I had to go out and buy a 15-foot long USB male A to male mini-B cable. Beyond that, when I'm done using the controller and decide to unplug it, it'll turn my PS3 on and sync with that, which means that I'd either have to unplug my PS3 when I'm using the controller on my PC or get up and turn the damn thing off constantly.
So yeah, I've tried just about every option available to me (that I'm aware of). If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I used an EMS USB2 for a really long time and it worked fairly well, but the rumble support was pretty much broken.

Haven't yet tested anything with Rumble. I've never really cared much about rumble, and half of the time I always forget it even exists, so it's not really a priority for me.

Edit: Well, the package says it supports vibration, but I can't seem to get it to work. Then again, I also didn't bother to install the drivers that came with it as Windows 7 detected it automatically, so that might be why.

  13. Okay, so I've been tinkering around with building a new (old) computer using the desecrated remains of my recently deceased motherboard. In order to get the full picture, a short backstory is necessary. A couple of months ago, I got home from work to find my computer off. Upon turning it on, I was greeted by, well... nothing. Nothing really happened when I turned it back on. I started to panic, and ended up spending a good few hours tinkering with the computer trying to diagnose the problem (pretty much taking out/replacing as many vital components in the computer with backup parts as I had at my disposal). Having narrowed the problem down to either the CPU or the motherboard, I ended up replacing the motherboard and CPU. I figured since I'm gonna have to shell out a good bit of money to do that, I might as well just go for a substantial upgrade rather than just buying replacements of about the same power. I ended up with this motherboard and this CPU.

That's all fine and good, and hopefully this motherboard will last me a good 5 or more years, but that's not really the point of this post. Jumping ahead to... just a few days ago, a thought popped into my head that had not previously occurred to me for some idiotastic reason: I haven't bothered trying to pop out the CMOS battery on the old motherboard to see if that'll fix it. Lo and behold, it did. I did some tinkering with the motherboard out-of-case and managed to get it to boot up and function (as much as a motherboard with nothing but some RAM and a crappy PCI video card in it would function, anyway). I felt pretty stupid for a while, seeing as how I spent a good amount of money replacing the motherboard in the first place, but at least that gives me another decent computer to work with.

To start I bought a cheap case, a hard drive, and a cheap DVD burner and started my little experiment. It's all done and built, but there's still a couple of problems I've gotta get worked out. I ended up having to buy a bigger case fan for the case because the stock fan was two times smaller than any normal case fan should be, and put the stock fan on the side of the case to replace the plastic air duct that was there before. It runs pretty loud, and the computer still runs hotter than it did in its original case, so that's something I'm going to have to keep messing with.

Since I often have company over and play LAN games a lot, it's nice to actually have two decent computers for gaming handy. When it's not being used for gaming I'm sure I can think of something more useful and productive to use it for (a local web server maybe).

    Main computer specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16Ghz Processor
    GPU: GeForce 9600 GT
    RAM: 4GB DDR2
    OS: Windows 7 Beta 64-Bit

    Secondary computer specs:
    CPU: 3.4Ghz Pentium 4 Processor
    GPU: GeForce 9600 GSO
    RAM: 3GB DDR2
    OS: Windows 7 Beta 32-Bit

On another note, I've actually gotten to like Windows 7 so much that I have it installed on both of my computers and my laptop, no dual boot. I'm gonna be sad when August rolls around and the beta stops functioning. :(

Well, it's certainly more than I would have ever expected, that's for sure. I didn't think I was going to get anything for graduation at all. I suppose I shouldn't mention the $1,000 check my grandparents sent me, too. :P All I can say is... holy crap.

As for the laptop, it's really nice. It's much better than my current desktop PC in just about every way. Of course, I wouldn't complain either way. I'm really, really thankful.

A 32-bit OS like XP Pro can only access 2GB of memory, or correct me if I'm wrong. Still, nice gift.

Theoretical limit is 4GB. Actual limit for XP is 3GB though. So it's a perfect fit.

  16. Today is my birthday. That means I am officially one year older (17) than I was on this very date last year (16). It's funny how things work that way.

The day's events included.. well.. not much. I went out and pre-ordered a copy of Quake 4, and I bought a TV Tuner/Video Capture Card. I decided I'd try it out by playing some Metroid Prime (because it's probably the most awesome game ever). I even took a screenshot for no apparent reason.

    Hooray.

  17. So yeah, I've been once again toying around with my website's design; something I do too often. I think the last design lasted me a bit less than a year, I think. I guess I just can't stay satisfied with the look of my site.

    http://doomrealm.mancubus.net/testingcrap/index.php

This is the new design I've been working on for a couple of days. Currently all of the main sections of the site are up, but nothing else. It took me a while to get the layout just right, because getting things to work cross browser is a pain in the ass (there's probably STILL problems in some browsers), but.. hopefully it's good enough. I personally like it a lot. It's simple, easy to navigate, and easy on the eyes.

I've also been trying to learn PHP, so I could possibly incorporate some of that as well. I won't get my hopes up though.

Anyhows, I got the site back up and running, as well as two map reviews. Hooray.

Yeah.. It's not something I'm especially good at. I am not sure why. I fully intend to stop doing that though. :P

  18. Today I encountered something I had not seen in quite a long time.. a Blue Screen of Death.
Now, it may not seem like a big deal to you, and it definitely did not seem like it at the
time, as I just shrugged it off and resumed what I was originally doing, but it kept happening.
Within an hours' time, I would see once again the Blue Screen of Death, popping in my face.
After a few occurances, I decided it might be a good idea to try and reformat.

That I did. Apparently, that did not help AT ALL, considering it's STILL happening. In fact,
it's happened probably 4 times during the course of my attempting to write this very post.
Now, I am totally unsure as to what might be causing this problem. So I have come to you,
oh wonderful, helping, caring people of Doomworld forums. Can you aid an idiot in need?

The most common thing I see when a BSOD occurs is the following:
"*** STOP: 0x000000F4 (bunch of other hexidecimal numbers)".

However, on one single occurance, something strange happened. Rather than doing what it would
normally do and print information all over the screen, it instead only printed about 5 lines
to the screen.. one of them being something along the lines of "Unknown hard error".

I have tried a couple of things to see what might be causing this, with no clear answer in
sight. Firstly, I, as suggested, used MEMTEST to check for any problems with my RAM. Everything
appeared to be fine. I also tried running windows in Safe mode, only to have it BSOD in me again
    within minutes.

As of right now, I'm thinking it might be the hard drive. Actually, I'm hoping it is the hard drive, rather than something more crucial, such as the mother board.

    Here are my system specs:

    CPU: 3.4Ghz Pentium 4
    GPU: nVidia GeForce 6800 GT
    RAM: 1024MB DDR2 RAM
    HDD: 160GB Maxtor
OS: Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2)

And yes, I do realize this is probably the WRONG place to be asking for help, but whatever.

Your processor has exceeded the speed limit. You should receive a letter from the police in a few days.

    3. Use

      Use

You might also trying lowering your ram speed in bios, see if the screen comes back under normal operation. cheapo ram gives stop errors all the time, even if it passes memtest. Also check for bios updates from motherboard manufacturer, this can solve blue screens.

    4. AgentSpork

      AgentSpork

Well, the problem's already been solved. I just have to wait until they send me a replacement hard drive, which could be anywhere from a couple of days to two weeks. Until then, I've put in a temporary replacement drive, and everything is working just fine now.

There was also a photo story in Viz comic some years ago where a vagrant successfully applied for a job making new internets. He made 20 internets in his first day, and then was able to give a few to the paper clip salesman who had motivated him to apply for the job in the first place by refusing to give him 10p for a cup of tea. Or something like that.

  21. So, a few days ago, I was listening to some discussion on the funderful (heh) land of IRC, when someone mentioned RoTT (Rise of The Triad), which led me to find WinRoTT (v2.19), which seems to be the only RoTT source port I've seen that works worth a damn. After a while of toying around with this port, I began to think "Hey, maybe I should make some crappy levels for this game.. it can't be too hard". I downloaded one of the (crappy, but good enough) editors, and began to mess with it. I also pestered Kaiser to try and make a map as well! :P

I made four Rise of The Triad Maps. Kaiser made one (which of course makes my maps look bad :(). The maps are overall much more linear than the maps in Rise of the Triad, which should make them more fun to play (god I hate running around giant mazes with no idea of what to do).

If you happen to have a copy of Rise of The Triad handy, and would like to try these levels (which I'm sure you probably don't), feel free. I would recommend downloading the WinRoTT (v2.19, all the other versions are extremely buggy) source port (linked above). Loading the maps with WinRoTT should be fairly self-explanatory. Upon loading the exe, a window pops up before the game is launched, which allows you to load custom levels (labeled "Alternate Game Levels"). Simply put the file in your rott directory, and.. load er' up!

In other news.. I have no life! Hwahaha..ha..Eh. OMG

    HOT 90 DEGREE ANGLED ACTION:
    MAP01 - Dark Entryway - Me:

    MAP02 - Panic - Kaiser:

    MAP03 - Ruined Courtyard - Me:

    MAP04 - Monastery Fortress - Me:

    MAP05 - Blood Cave - Me:

    Download.. IF YOU DARE.

Heh, I'll be sure to play these maps Spork, they look neato. Also, since you've made some ROTT maps you've motivated me to put together my old ROTT maps into one file. There's a total of 8 maps, here are some pictures:

Cool, just played them. They're pretty good. :)

      Curse over your head

I don't know about you, but I personally find some of the giant mazes throughout games like Wolf3D to be rather annoying. The gameplay is usually like so: Go around searching every of the 500 or so doors in the level, hoping that one of them holds a key. While Rise of The Triad is a departure from this for the most part, there are a few levels in the game that can be like that. It gets too tedious, and I eventually just give up.
I don't have a problem with non-linear maps as long as they're not THAT non-linear.

  22. I've been saving up money to buy a new computer for a long while now, and I finally had enough money to buy one and.. I did.

    Here are its specs:
    CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Processor 550 w/ HT 3.4GHz
    RAM: 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz - 2 x 512MB
VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT PCI Express 256MB DDR3 w/Digital and S-Video Out
    HDD: 160GB Seagate 7,200 RPM 8MB Cache
    etc..

  23. Well, I spent the last couple of hours toying with PhotoShop, to see if I could make my site look a little bit less... lousy. I thought that I'd try and make it look a little bit more visually appealing, while at the same time making it easier on the eyes, by using darker colors. I think it turned out pretty good, but I'm just curious as to what you people here in the blogs forum think of it.

I threw out the CSS because I was sick of redesigning (which I've done a lot). In my case, even putting in a line that changes the font or link color invariably leads to an escalating series of additions until I've ended up with something I don't like at all. And even when I like a design, I get sick of it a few weeks later and have to start over.

What's been going on here for the last month? Anything interesting happen?
