    Doom 3: Phobos

Start a new thread with your WIPs and keep us updated. It would be cool to see.

    unpopular retro opinions

Ocarina of Time is dog shit.
  3. Grab whatever merch you can before they change it, I guess.
  4. Classic Doom being any IWAD being played on any source port with any PWADS/mods, anywhere in the world. How many people are playing? Hundreds? Thousands? How do we find out? I'm guessing with the new Doom games and the popularity of Brutal Doom there are more players than there were 10 years ago, but it's hard to gauge if it's under or over 10,000. Brutal Doom remains #1 on moddb and it has had 174 downloads in the past day, and there are youtube videos of BD/PB with hundreds of thousands of views. Plus Romero's SIGIL is coming up which should bring in a few more players. The steam charts only show a handful of players but I doubt that represents much. What do you guys think?

How many classic Doom players are there today?

That's an interesting way of putting it and until I read this I wasn't so sure what all the hubbub was about regarding how we should be counting people. The amount of people Doom has affected and its lasting impression on someone's identity as a fan or as someone who plays the game pretty much goes without saying is a huge number, is subject to all kinds of fuzzy interpretations, and is next to impossible to count. I was trying to get at something more concrete and statistical in nature: How many machines are running some instance of the game in some interval of time. I think anybody with any relevant info to share on that has already shared it so if people want to pontificate more on what a better question is then I don't care at this point.

You definitely bring up some good points but I thought my original definition was rather clear: Regarding when, this can be answered in one of two ways that I'm interested in, either in the past week or in the past day. I'm happy to hear any ambiguities or issues you have with this. I was pretty lax with this definition throughout the topic and that may have allowed quite a bit of confusion.

@Fonze I agree with you on just about everything except for how silly or useless it is. At the very least we can find a lower bound on the number of players and we did that here. There may still be some uncertainty regarding whether we're looking at daily or weekly players or whatever you want to bring up but the point isn't to come to some precise number like 87,446 in some precise domain of source ports, it's just to try to get a sense of how many people are playing idTech 1 in this day and age.
  8. Definitely one of the best ones so far. He looks a little too much like he works in an office somewhere, maybe he needs more of a crewcut look.

    my doom fan art submission.

The second one looks like it came out of Monsters Inc.

    Official History of Chex Quest

I started begging my mom to buy me Chex as soon as I saw the commercial. Even after I got the game she kept buying it. I was eating so much Chex cereal because of this game.

Would the forum software be able to tell us anything interesting? Not that it would matter much, as people already pointed out; people use this forum for all sorts of reasons, not just because they actively play Doom. Those GZDoom numbers look the most informative so far. I'm a little blown away, 40,000+. The game is kicking a lot stronger than I would have guessed before I started thinking about it.

Yes, a survey would not be very useful, and as Graf Zahl pointed out there's no demand for implementing telemetry. My main goal with this thread is hopefully to see some interesting data points that people may have to share or any creative ideas on how to measure the size of the player base. Just to satisfy curiosity... And also to get a sense of where the game stands today.

All time sales obviously aren't useful, but recent ones could be. That's why I brought up the daily downloads for Brutal Doom, it looks like it's getting at least a few thousand downloads a month. It's impossible to say what percentage are sticking with the game for longer than a week, but it's a pretty significant constant stream of activity.

Looks like the kind of thing you would see when you shut your eyes and push your knuckles against them.

so does anybody know any anti narrative games recently?

Oh yeah! Sim Ant and Sim Tower were two favorites back in the day, those are worth a look. I might have to pull those out now...

Elite: Dangerous, No Man's Sky, and Space Engineers come to mind.

What is your weirdest irrational fear?

I can't really think of any I have now but when I was a little kid I had to wear shoes when taking a shit. Somehow I felt vulnerable without them.

This year I continued my tradition of not finishing Doom 3

FEAR also mixed horror and good shooting pretty well. It's totally doable.

    Possible goodbye to lootboxes?

Aren't 30 year olds Doomers? And then 18-25 are Zoomers.
  20. I got an automated phone system for some kind of credit card service.

the one thing to balance DOOM

The beginning of E3 is one of the more dramatic sequences in the game for me. You flip that eye switch and get raised up to a fleshy field and red sky and get confronted by two Cacos at the entrance to a building made of giant red bricks. It sends the message quite clearly: You're in Hell now. I would get so freaked out as a kid by the stuff you see in that episode.

Doom Drone - a Doom remix game

I like the idea, I like the choice of music and sounds, and the text boxes were fun to read. I found it a little odd that I was cleaning up things like health bonuses and floor lamps, but since I got lore for doing it I didn't mind. My only complaint is that the controls are annoying.

The recharge station would have to have limited uses, otherwise it just gets abused, but then that makes it no different from cells laying on the ground. edit: Oh, unless you meant a charging station for only the chaingun. That might work. Maybe you could instead have batteries you can pick up for it so it still needs power but doesn't use cells. What do you mean by starting with 0 armor yet running fast? Are you saying the armor is supposed to be some kind of power-armor that gives the wearer special abilities?

the one thing to balance DOOM

That's an interesting way to look at it. I wouldn't make it cost 2 cells for 2 bullets though, only 1 cell or even less. And since the CG is getting nerfed in a way, I would buff the pistol a bit to balance that out, I've always thought just making it shoot as fast as you can click it would make it feel right. I don't think the game is broken as it is though.

    Micro Mages (NES) released today

I watched a video a while back of some of the techniques they used to make the game fit into their constraints, there's some pretty cool stuff they're doing. I'm gonna keep an eye out for speedruns of this game.
