What is your best tip for beginners?

    1. Align your textures because yes. 2. If you get stuck or encounter a problem or don't know how to do a thing, search Doomworld and YouTube. If you can't find a solution to your problem, make a post on Doom Editing. 3. Do not lose sight of what makes mapping and playing maps fun for you. Your map may be shit and you should try to improve but in that process of improving your map and mapping skills, do not lose what makes your map fun for you and gets you excited to map.
  2. Going Down 2: Up is the new Down Baron Door 5: Door-pocalypse Sunder 2: The Reconstruction Icarus 2: Alien Rearguard Moonlust (Sunlust 2) Ancient Aliens 2: Modern Aliens
  3. As someone who doesn't like Plutonia, I want to join. However my laptop is shit right now and half the programs don't work so I can't map. Posting so that I can find this thread again later and if it still has slots open when I get a better laptop (Should be soon enough) I'll sign up for it.
  4. I don't really agree. The thing about video games is... there are so many different kinds of games that what works for one game won't work for another. What you said about the story of a game is your experience is true for some games but not for others. When you play something like Doom, Pokemon or Morrowind, the story is how you experience it. However for other games like Lufia, Knight of Lodis or Chrono Trigger, the game has its own story. There could be aspects of it that you can theory-craft around but there is an overall "one true story". Cutscenes by themselves, I don't think are good or bad. It all depends on how you handle it. Too much of it can ruin any game. Not using cutscenes in any game will harm some games more than it will help. Really the only universal rule I would say about making video games is "Make it fun." The exact kind of fun varies. If a game isn't fun it's not a good game.
  5. But I do think it was accurate for the game he made with the others at ID: DooM!
  6. I think the story in Doom is like the story in a porno in the same way that it's only there to have the characters get to the "action", everything else be damned. Taking into account ONLY the story that was in Doom at the time of release and not stuff that was added later, the plot of Doom is "There was a soldier/space marine. UAC opened a portal to Hell. Demons happened. Space Marine must kill the demons." Expanding this further to include the story in the other episodes of Doom, we get stuff like "Space Marine found portal. Ended up deeper in hell. Must kill demons. Space Marine found Cyber Demon. Killed Cyberdemon. And then he was above Hell. Went to hell. Killed Mastermind Demon and came back to Earth. Oh no! Demons are back in earth. RIP ." I am being a bit reductive with Doom's story of course, but it's still not that much more "complex" or "well-written" than something out of a porn movie. "Single lady gets hungry. Orders pizza. Handsome Pizza man arrives. Lady can't afford to pay for pizza. She must fuck the pizza man as payment for the pizza." In both cases the story is only there to get to the action. In Doom, it's only there to get the player/Space Marine/Doomguy to explore the levels and shoot the demons. Likewise, the story in a porn movie is only there to get the people to fuck. Compare this to something like Final Fantasy Tactics, Chrono Trigger or Ace Attorney. Here the story is deeply tied to the gameplay. In some cases, you may even say that the Gameplay is more like interactive fight scenes/action scenes that enhance the story.
  7. This is the Totally Realtm looooooooooooore of Doom 2.
  8. I don't remember the map name but honestly a lot of the city maps from Hell on Earth Starter pack/ Extermination Day can count.

Did ponies use to be banned on doomworld?

Oh hey! Remember the old site UI and stuff. Don't remember the flamewars though and generally found the site and community to be welcoming, chill and nice (one of the best on the net). Probably because I almost never visited Everything Else? I do remember some unhinged threads but I never really felt how bad they can be because the unhinged stuff I remember were from the fun times I had browsing Post Hell.

Did ponies use to be banned on doomworld?

Nah I was always active on this site since joining but I rarely visit Everything Else. What happened before 2017?

Did ponies use to be banned on doomworld?

To be fair, this is in Everything Else, so you can discuss stuff not related to Doom and I think some people have made political threads in Everything Else before but I'm not sure because I don't really get politics and stuff.

Did ponies use to be banned on doomworld?

Okay. I did not expect to see Maredolf Pontler at 1:20 AM. This thread just keeps going deeper and deeper down the sewer drain.

    I think the Evangelion rant was a copy-pasta. I'm like 65% sure.

    I can't come up with a level layout/idea

Instead of trying to come up with the whole level layout, maybe you can go by a room by room basis? "Okay first room. I want to make a starting room that opens up to a dark circular room with a light in the center." "Okay now I want to make a bedroom. Let's connect it to the circle. I choose left." "Okay an outdoor area would be cool. The bedroom can look out into it. But how does the player get to the outdoor area?" "I know let's make a small reception room to the right of the outdoor area." "The reception room should have another door. Let's connect that to the circle room via hallway".

How many times do you save in a single level?

As a save-scum, I save anywhere from once every 5 minutes to 2-3 times a minute.

Did ponies use to be banned on doomworld?

I feel like there's a simpler explanation that's being missed here (by both parties). Maybe some people watch cute kid shows and buy merch and surround themselves with the stuff is because... they like the show? I feel like if you like a show or franchise a lot, even if it's for kids, it might be pretty normal fan behavior to buy toys and posters and avatars from said show.

Hm. This thread seems to be devolving. Maybe this is why ponies were banned. They cause threads to devolve into... whatever this is right now.

What the hell is "artificial difficulty"?

After reading a bunch of replies in this thread, I think this answer feels the most right to me. In an RPG maybe artificial difficulty could be like at a certain point in the game's plot, you need an item to progress and to get it you need to buy it from some shop somewhere. However the item costs a fuck ton of money. There's no objective or quest that lets you get that money really quickly. Your ONLY option is to just mindlessly grind random encounters that you can beat in your sleep for IRL hours until you have the money. There is no challenge for you to overcome. There is no skill that you need to develop. The game just decided that you can't progress until you just grind. I remember a few examples from ProDoomer (A unique and creatively bad doom mod). In multiple levels the mod opens up monster closets really close to the player with powerful suicide-bomber enemies that blow up in less than a second and it kills the player even from maximum health and armor. It doesn't matter if you are better at Doom than all the doom gods combined. You will still die here on your first play through. However, once you know that the trap is there, even someone who is mediocre (at best) at Doom can get past in 2-5 tries. There is no skill involved here. You either die because you're playing the map for the first time or you get past it because you died once before and know the trap is there.
