  1. So, I fired up the Packard Bell today - it's AT LEAST 30 years old. DOS and Win 95. Took me a couple hours but I got to The Shores of Hell in a couple of hours.

Do people actually PLAY the mods or maps you make?

Misread the title initially. Yes, people do play them. For many of them I have counters on the pages they reside on on Doom Wad Station. For instance - Blood Works (https://www.doomwadstation.net/bloodworks/bloodworks.html) more than 3000 downloads. Mitnal (https://www.doomwadstation.net/mitnal/mitnal.html) more than 6400 downloads. And honestly, I enjoyed Bloodworks more. No Place to hide (https://doomwadstation.net/npth/) more than 3000 downloads as well. And that's just 3 of them. Benefits of having your own website I suppose where you can keep track of that stuff if you want. I didn't place a counter on Sawshank Lament (that was the last map I did a couple years ago I think it's been now. But yes, I know they get played
  4. Been doing this a long time (making maps) - some good, some bad but there are quite a few playthroughs on Youtube so I thought I'd share. http://www.doomwadstation.net/Videos/

I mean, you have to. If you haven't played the map all the way through how are you going to know if something isn't working or if you might see something that on 2nd thought you might want to change. I play all my maps through multiple times in multiple ports so that I know it's doing and looking exactly as I intended it to in those various ports.

    Favorite shooter after 2000?

Honestly, I think the Splintercell games are my favorite. They did the 3rd person really well. I especially LOVED the first game. The mechanics improved with the newer games (and I played them all) but the first one really told the story and sold it.
  7. So, went into the archives in my Doom reviews and came across this one which was reviewed by Blue Paladin in 2005. I hope you enjoy it as much as he seemed to. https://www.doomwadstation.net/doom_reviews/dejb/ Author(s): Toronaga SP doom (map 1) Requires: Designed for Ultimate Doom levels E1M1 Thru E1M8. I used ZDoom v. 2.0. Do not play this with WinDoom as DJB has Hexen attributes. Use ZDoom or Risen3D, maybe even Legacy. Reviewer: Blue Paladin
  8. Ray (aka Shitbag) was one of the better mappers back in the day - this is from June 2004. Definitely worth a playthrough. From the review: DIFFICULTY RATING - rating: 10 OH MY GOD! Ray really shoveled it out this time. I have some advice for you. DON'T leave any Hell knights roaming the level behind you or you WILL find yourself trapped. If you see it, kill it. Use strategy when possible and necessary but DON'T advance in the level till you've cleared an area or you are going be doing the dead guy act. I played this on UV. If you are not a seasoned veteran with some serious skills, don't even try it on this level. Go to something easier. Strafing is an important skill to possess here. You will face just about every creature that Doom2 has to offer and until you progress into the level some you have pistol and super shotgun. Be fast, be diligent and be ready! Playability - rating: 9 There is no shortage of action in this map. I guarantee the only way you will be bored is if you play it with -nomonsters. The map is cunningly designed and brings you back through several areas repeatedly but always with more bad guys to fight. The only part that really pissed me off was the room with the blue key - God, I hate those cyberdemons. Level Design - rating: 9 As usual, Ray puts out a top notch level with lots of cool design features and a design that will keep you on your toes. Be ready for anything and admire some of the architecture along the way but don't dawdle or you'll find yourself being sliced and diced before you can say Doom. Take a trip back to 2004 and experience a really awesome map. https://www.doomwadstation.net/stigmata/
  9. I find it almost impossible to believe that it's been 20 years since this, the very first user made map for Doom 3 hit the internet. Time flies when you're having fun I guess. Anyway, I thought it would be nice to revisit this map since it has been 20 years and many of you may remember and many of you may have never even played it since it was so long ago. With that said, here's the link to the review by Master of Puppets on Doom Wad Station all those years ago. https://www.doomwadstation.net/doom3/maps/kiltron/ From the included text file: ----The first originally created Single Player user map for DOOM 3---- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Title : Trite Breeding Facility Author : Thearrel "Kiltron" McKinney Email Address : kiltron@planetdoom.com Description : Map for use with DOOM 3 Special Thanks : id Software, PlanetDOOM, GameSpy Industries

I'm glad you enjoyed this map. Of course, I didn't design it for any specific port so it could work with many but I thought it really displayed best in Risen3d. I did take a poke a Zdoom specific maps early on but I always felt that a map should be playable in whatever port you enjoyed the most. :-)
  11. I can't EVEN begin to tell you the respect I have for the original wad authors that began the long journey of map making back in the early 90's after the release of Doom in December of 1993. This map was created in 1994 using DEU 5.21 and BSP 1.1. There was nothing visual about these tools. At best you could say it was like being in the stone age of wad making. By the time I started making maps just a few years later the tools had improved immensely (Bronze age I guess is a good analogy). To give you an idea of the time (probably before many of you were even born), his email address shows as this in the txt file: Russ Ringer Email Address : Compuserve 75410,1116 FIDONET 1:343/64 internet: fnork@u.washington.edu Compuserve. lol Also this little bit of info at the end: Where to get this WAD * FTP sites: ftp.uwp.edu, infant2.sphs.indiana.edu BBS numbers: BETTER WORLD (206) 634-0671 Other: Compuserve GAMER forum How many of you remember BBS's? I had one back in the day (during the wild west days of dialup before WWW was a thing or at the best an infant and "dancing baby" was the internet craze. Anyway. Enough memory lane stuff. I'm posting this because I think maps and map makers shouldn't be forgotten. Lost to history if you will. I hope Russ is still out there somewhere, still Dooming. Here's the description: Description : The genetic experiments at the Universal Acme Corp. have gotten out of hand. You must clean up the mess, find the computer control central, shut it down and destroy it. This wad shows off many of the neat things DOOM can do. This is a polished wad with NO HOM and full alignments. Plenty of ammo and weapons if you use the right strategy. This level is designed for strategy and playability. Watch out for traps! You WILL be killed the first time through! Full support for single, multi-player and deathmatch. You can download it here: https://www.doomwadstation.net/doom_reviews/1994/stationx/

    Station X - 30 years old. A real classic

When I played it on SP (you'll see if you read my review) I found it infuriating, honestly. But, it WAS 1994. lol

I don't really have time for reviewing any more. I reviewed this some time ago but I feel like here in 2024 we need to look back at our beginnings.
  17. I remember that website now. Thanks for bringing it up. I'll add it to my main page with this link. You can see all the ones I could find along with ones that I was able to resurrect on doomwadstation on the main page (still more to find and add).
  18. I came across a web page on Doom Wad Station of an interview I did with Bill Bardy way back in the day - 2006 I believe (he created Boomtown and owned Birdnestdesigns - the original domain which no longer exists) and I had links to many sites on that page which also, no longer exist except in the internet archive. This game has been around a very long time and many websites are now gone forever except for that archive. I wanted to remember some of them. Outpost of Doom II Olddoom.com doom3.Filefront Harrys Doom Planet Doom2.net Zdoom3000 Robotech TC (Doom) Robotech TC (Doom2) The Phobos Lab Newdoom.com These were sites that I managed to resurrect from the dead - Boomtown's files were all given to me by Bill Bardy so I could keep his site alive. They are hosted on doomwadstation.net (just didn't want you to be surprised when you clicked on the link). I try to maintain the history as best I can. Boomtown! Doom Legacy Wads (created by Jive, may he rest in peace) GZDOOM (created by Jive, may he rest in peace) Johnny's Doom II Levels page Doomology, A Doomed Page Blue Paladin's Dimension (my good friend Eric used to maintain this but gave it to me for archival purposes) I'm sure there are many more and if you would like to post them here with the most recent archive.org link you can find, then they can remain alive
  19. All I know is thank goodness for archive.org. They even have a copy of my original site on the aol servers. lol
  20. It's just a subdomain of gamespy so gamespy can allow any subdomain they want
