Most Proud/Nostalgic Demo & Future Demo/Speedrunning Goals
Gurlugon replied to Kinetic's topic in Other Demos & Discussion
I was the first person to use the E2M6 void glide in a Nightmare! episode run, and I broke the 9 second barrier on N4M9 :) I worked really hard on those, though neither record lasted long in the end. Oh, and N4M1-025, which I was obsessed with pushing the limit on. Wore my fingertips out til they were numb for days on several occasions chasing after it. There are still plenty of runs left I want to achieve someday (N4M1-024!), but I just don't have the time and energy for Doom I used to have... :^) -

E4M9 "Fear" NM-Speed in 0:08.86 Did this about a month ago and was never satisfied with it, but there's no sense holding onto it as I don't see myself attempting it ever again. n4m9-008.zip

Doom II Map 22 "The Catacombs" NM100S in 0:32 ns22-032.zip Somebody please explain to me what insane one-in-a-million luck made that glide possible...

Very nice. The wallrun into the lift is sweet. Do you have a consistent method for the early lift drop? Here's an 18.66 I got while shooting for 17 last year. I think if I hadn't gotten caught on 2 doors and also pressed the exit switch from further away, maybe I could have gotten it... n1s1-018.zip 17 is definitely possible, I can feel it in my bones! Strangely, DSDA doesn't have stx-vile's 18 from 2005 (the current record).

E4M1 "Hell Beneath" NM100S in 29s Only a second faster, but a drastic improvement in quality. Sorry I couldn't get this one in for Beat Your Own Demos Month. Was shooting for it all afternoon and only finally nailed it 5 minutes before I had to go out. n4s1-029.zip

Plutonia Map 10 "Onslaught" NM100s in 1:10 First real new demo in a while. Disappointed this one went the way it did. Oh, well. ps10-110.zip

E4M8 "Unto The Cruel" NM100S in 53s Oh, how naive... I was the maniac all along :) I must have forgot I did this or something. I only just found it again now, a year later. Also beats the NM-Speed record by 5 seconds (sorry, SAV!!) n4s8-053.zip

E2M1 "Deimos Anomaly" NM100S in 57s 2 second improvement over AdamH's run. Old demo. I was shooting for 55-56 at the time, but this map just sucks. Could obviously be improved with better luck in pinky town, but good luck with that. n2s1-057.zip

TNT Map 25 NM100S in 2:35 Old demo I wasn't satisfied with, but never got around to improving. Really wanted that par time! es25-235.zip

I really don't know for sure, man. I can't argue for it with too much conviction as I really don't know a ton about engine stuff, that's for better minds than me to figure out. All I can say is I saw a huge increase in success rate when using the chainsaw. I experimented with all different angles using the SSG, but the chainsaw was consistently giving me the best results.

Plutonia Map 04 "Caged" NM100S in 1:08 This level's a blast. I'm usually too zapped after work most days to do NM runs, but I couldn't wait to get home to grind this one out. Really fun level. ps04-108.zip

Plutonia Map 26 "Bunker" NM100S in 1:03 Been a while since I spent a day grinding out an IL. From routing to finish only took about 6 hours. <1:05 was a real headache, though. ps26-103.zip

Thanks to my ISP being junk as of late, playing anything online after work is a total bust. But DOOM'll never let you down, so here's the result of some de-rust/practice. I'd like to revisit this at some point as I think around 1:43 is possible if all the stars align. Feedback appreciated. n1s7-146.zip

No, this was noticed in practice and tested time and time again for consistency. I tested it for about half in hour in a variety of situations* and was getting 7 shots for Pinkies and 20 shots for Cacos consistently across the board, occasionally 8 and 21 respectively. I use Chocolate Doom for reference. I don't know if its' damage calls behave differently from other ports. Again, feel free to try it yourself and return any interesting results you get to the contrary. The same figures were also true for me in PrBoom. And to the answer the second part: Because when I first noticed this, it was during a speedrun attempt in which it was most preferable to use plasma against Cacos and Pinkies to conserve cells for the BFG later, hence the conservation aspect. I know this and that side of the forum don't really mix much. *from saves, fresh start, idclev'ing, skill levels, .bat launch and so on, just in case for whatever reason the RNG pulls were based on how the game/level was launched.

Might not be in the spirit of the thread as it's not an engine quirk or insight into monster behaviour or whatever, just a fun thing I thought I'd share. So, pinkies take 7 plasma shots to down. The exact amount of time necessary to hold the fire button down to fire 7 shots is exactly equivalent to one bar of the double-bass drum breakdown in Metallica's "One". A Cacodemon takes 20/21 plasma shots to down and that lasts exactly two bars of holding down fire. :V Fun little 'mental metronome' for you ammo conservationists out there. Try it yourself.
