IronEagle Competition 57: The Abyss (open until the end of August)
NaZa replied to Pegleg's topic in WAD Discussion
Survived +2 in 1:59:44, category 2*, prB+ 2.5.1.4 UV as per usual. ironeagle_julaug23_naza.zip Immensely satisfied with this run. Took it super slow hoping the secrets are worth it. Category 2 in the sense that I never played this set, but I had looked MAP31 of it up on the Wiki a long time ago. I think it was after the solutions for a Guess the Map where it featured was revealed? I remembered its layout and a certain monster it had. Not anything more, not even the secret exit that I managed to chance upon, but I feel it was enough to let me know what awaits me in said map. -
Obituaries finally added. I apologize for the long wait, I've explained on Discord I needed to take time off for a family emergency. Situation's cleared up for the better now, though. As for the challenge itself, joe-ilya holds the lead quite convincingly from @Beginner, who keeps quite a good record on tackling UDoom WADs in the last four years. 90 minutes is not a small amount of time in Ironman, yet @LadyMistDragon's prepared run opens the door for a sub-2 hour run as well. Will anyone dare risk it? All I know is, a lot of the runners will at least find solace in beating the host because hot damn my run is bad. Also glad to see @Xenaero return, as well as @TheNoob_Gamer and @Vytaan supply their debut runs! Hope to see you also in the future! Not a lot of changes happened on the yearly board after last month. @Bdubzzz extended their lead with a 5th victory in 6 months (which beats even the mythical Krypto, whose best run was 4 in the opening six months, though BK had 7 successive wins from Sep 18 to Apr 19). @Asbadagba jumps into 2nd with @ginc 3rd, after LadyMistDragon falls three places. This month, the places reversed, as LMD looks to be profiting off of Asbadagba's premature death on E1M9. Elsewhere, @Pseudonaut joins the Top 10 at the expense of @Maribo, while @Brainfreezzzzz and Beginner might have only jumped two places each, but they made huge strides towards well and truly joining the fight for the Top 10- this is especially noteworthy considering their strong runs this month as well. @Darth_wiader, @SuyaSS and @Ludi also made impressive jumps across the board. But this month can mix most of that up - still far from over!

Another shameless self promotion here with the Winnebago that inadvertently made me hate the 1px grid... plus a Millenium Falcon by Doom_RO which is frankly difficult to capture without flying. MAP01 of DBP24: Spaceballs: The Sequel: The Search for More DBP Maps for both. -

!!! Recommended to read Essential Info because this WAD has a unique case with secret levels and starting map. !!! June, 2023 don't worry, the situation is better once if you make it there > The yearly standings > The Ironman Discord Server Standard Leaderboard [1] SURVIVED +2 (1:10:03): Bdubzzz - Makes a mockery out of the final map for a fourth straight victory. Well played, Bdubzzz. [1] SURVIVED +2 (1:26:31): Asbadagba - Damn, the finish makes the final two minutes all the more worth it! Literal edge of despair! [1] SURVIVED +2 (1:32:14): Brainfreezzzzz - Takes a risk without a radsuit on MAP15... and destroys the set! Great job! [1] SURVIVED +2 (2:42:12): Beginner - Back to 2022 form with this run. Nice to have you back in the top, Beginner. [1] SURVIVED +1 (1:44:12): ginc - Even without MAP32, this is shaping up to be a high finish. Really comfortable, too. [1] SURVIVED +0 (1:54:00): dt_ - The battle for second is on as dt_ snatches a second survival. Fitting. [1] SURVIVED +0 (1:56:03): Horus - Argh, all of two minutes short! Still a great run, unlike that Discord stream :^) Grats! [1] MAP32: Pseudonaut - Teamwork makes dreamwork; sandwiched by rockets. Nonetheless, committed to the gamble, love to see it. [1] MAP31: joe-ilya - Blindingly quick; breezes past the maps until a literal wall of red and green collapses in on joe. Hurts. [1] MAP15: 4shockblast - Brave jump, that. At least it was not a softlock :^) [3] MAP15: NaZa - Pro tip: never talk to your roommate about maps not having armor. It'll bite you back hard. [1] MAP15: SCF - Washing skeletons with blue tends to get quite noisy... luckily, the enemies don't mind. [1] MAP15: Suitepee - ... Sorry :( [1] MAP14: Maribo - Blood Meatball Sacrifice™. [1] MAP14: Vince Vega - This man has honour. I guess it makes up for lack of parkour skills :^) [1] MAP14: head_cannon - Fails to dance the tango through the green. [1] MAP13: LadyMistDragon - FEAR NOT, FOR THE DOOM MARINE IS RISEN! By opening a door, of all things... [1] MAP13: NoisyVelvet - That room was getting a bit too crowded, it indeed was time to dip. [1] MAP13: BoxY - No wonder BoxY did not see that coming - that was a N.O.E. missile alright. [1] MAP13: Anima Zero - "Oh hey, Mr. Spectre, what are you doing there?" [1] MAP13: Ludi - Second death at the hands of those barons. One more and they'll get a name. [1] MAP13: SuyaSS - Clear shot. Target locked. Fire at will. [1] MAP13: Andromeda - All I saw was a bunch of red, be it projectiles, be it the skin of a certain "door". [1] MAP13: Helm - Pushes into the hedge? feces? maze and discovers the TRVE 3D INFINITE HEIGHT CACODEMONS. [1] MAP11: Crusader No Regret - Well, that was hardcore ammo saving, and a hardcore shot right where it hurt most. [1] MAP11: Darth_wiader - Picked up the blue key. [2] MAP11: SiFi270 - Has a horrible fear of picking up health. Are they worth it? The chaingunners knew. :^) [1] MAP11: Chuckles_troll - Go hard or go home approach, fan of it. Encountered a very synced train of imps. [1] MAP11: SilentD00mer - Falls right into the arms of a hell knight. It was an emotional goodbye from the medikit too. [1] MAP11: Austinado - 💀💀💀 I commend you on the brave upload, and damn, that was a really cheap shot by the caco... [1] MAP11: Pegleg - Took more shots in those 30 seconds than an Instagram influencer. Prepared Leaderboard [#] SURVIVED +2 (23:32): Anima Zero - Nobody's touching this time, that's for sure. Anima himself almost didn't. Hot damn. What is the Doomworld Ironman League? The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag at the bottom of the post for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom! In June 2023 the DWIronman League dies to Return to Purgatory (-complevel 2) by James "Shade" Wilson, a name you might recognize if you're a big fan of Blood. Starting on MAP11, this mapset was released in September, 1995, but you would probably never have said it when you take a look at it. Not only is it quite polished for the time it was made in, it's also quite challenging and, as someone online said, on par with Plutonia and HR even if it was released before them. Beauty-wise... not necessarily, especially lighting, but it isn't bad; better than H2H-Xmas, dare I say. Ammo will probably never be a problem (except a unique case of a midtex slimefall on... MAP15?). Health, on the other hand... well. The mapset has a notable reliance on barons of hell, I should probably warn immediately, but cyberdemons only appear if you manage to reach MAP32 (along with 33% of the set's archviles), while revenants don't even make up 3% of the total bestiary, so the challenge is elsewhere. Find out where. Also, I find this mapset severely underrated, so that was also a factor in the choice, along with its suitable difficulty. As I've said in March, I'd like Ironman to sometimes even be a platform where you can discover mapsets that have gone under the radar. Either way, good luck! Essential Info Doom II (doom2.wad). Compatibility level 2, or "Doom (strict)" for ZDoom derivative ports. 5+2 maps, starting on MAP11, HOWEVER. The way Return to Purgatory works is that if you exit MAP15 normally, you are done. However, MAP15 has a secret exit leading to MAP31, which itself has a secret exit leading to MAP32. The way I intended to rank Ironman runners is that, if you selected the normal exit on any of these maps, you've survived. However, if you select the secret exit, you haven't survived yet. Thus, under the current system, if a player died on MAP32, while another entered the normal exit on MAP15 and was thus done, the one who exited would be above the MAP32 victim. Unfair? If I chose to rank people who died on MAP32 as Survived+1, they've neither survived nor would they have normally been ranked higher than those who reached MAP16 (closest equivalent to surviving MAP15) in Ironman. This is a point open for discussion. Time estimate (if survival): 60-120 minutes. As the set in question is from 1995, softlocks are to be expected. I've found none when I played this quite a year ago, but I was being quite cautious and I might have fallen in some yet I don't remember them. Stay frosty. > Download Return to Purgatory prboom-plus.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file dm2purge.wad -complevel 2 -skill 4 -record demo_name.lmp -warp 11 Rules: Previous threads:

Obituaries finally updated. I apologize it took so long, on the Discord I let people know I'm having uni finals this month so I couldn't be too active. Either way, last month was quite a treat - @Bdubzzz won by going the furthest quickest, but one has to definitely applaud @Pseudonaut for a best-equal second place finish which was a really noteworthy result. Another is a strong 7th place for @Ludi, which enabled them to jump 13 places on the yearly board! Speaking of, the structure of the top 12 was largely unchanged, only @ginc (entering the Top 5) swapping places with 4shock and Suitepee overtaking Maribo. What's to note there, though, is that there's already small battles beginning to form. Bdubzzz is currently the runaway first, but from 2nd (currently held by @LadyMistDragon who's in great form this year so far) to 5th - ginc - is a very exciting battle. Then comes a sharp jump, but the battle from 6th to 11th - 4shock to Pseudonaut - is also quite noteworthy, as there's only 26,000 points between them. Another sharp jump to yours truly and Anima Zero follows. So it'll be exciting in the coming months. @head_cannon has a curious statistic in that they've been exactly 22nd three months in a row now. Might try to break that curse this time :D

Map13 is fun. Music definitely brings it up as a whole package, but there's something fun about the progression in this one. Cage fight aside, that is :p... Big fan of the architecture in this one as well. Map17 is my personal favourite because it has a good midi coupled with one of the more memorable openings in the set. Later on the map might be brought down, but it's still quite decent. EDIT: Forgot to mention the obvious, that it lets you leave with only two keys. Great twist that can definitely affect your strategy if you already know the map and look at efficient ways to beat it, or in speedrunning. Map23, as Roofi said, has really nice visuals, but gameplay at some points is pretty questionable. Map28 I find relatively underrated at times, as it's a solid map. Nothing spectacular, but there's a lot of high tier enemies used differently than in the maps preceding it. Iirc there's not a lot of horde and setpiece situations, rather incidental combat, making it feel more daunting by its lack of organization in defense lore wise or smth... I think I'm reading too much into it ;) If I had to choose one, it'd probably be Map17. Not the best by any means but a good, fun map which puts most of the experience into one.

As somewhat of a different answer, MAP31 (Grey Dwarf) of Ancient Aliens... in the sense that you're technically "alien" there, that you're on what appears to be a 100% non-human ship. Also, the scale in some rooms is admirable (that one ambush on the ship's bridge particularly), as well as the MIDI being... different, accentuating the eerie feeling of the map. Not to mention there's an exploration factor involved and a lot of optional areas.

IronEagle Competition 56: Adonis: Escape from Urania (open until mid-July)
NaZa replied to Pegleg's topic in WAD Discussion
Category 1, dead on MAP05 after almost two hours of playtime. Probably a blessing in disguise as I had some errands to run and a lunch to eat. Losing concentration does this, and had I had a chaingun out, I probably would've survived... ironeagle_jun23_naza.zip -
Died on the fifth map because I lost armor and accidentally descended. Simple as that. Category 3 because I watched Brainfreezzzzz's attempt to cheer him on. Sucks, but oh well... Was quite a comfortable run up to that point too... dwironman_jun23_naza.zip

I can see why Sweden won, and I've nothing against it, but I would have much preferred Finland. The audience was on their side!!! Spain was last by televoting????? How??? How was it so low? Thank you Slovene jury for giving us points! ... not. How can we all as Balkans ever do anything if we don't bloc vote like the Scands? At least your people gave us points... We give Italy 12 points for the 3rd time in 4 years. Not sure if like, but it was a solid song. GREECE DID NOT GIVE CYPRUS 12 POINTS???????? The UK deserved last place more than Germany... France was way too low, like Spain, but I'm not sad, because La Zarra's attitude was just horrible... (showed a middle finger to the camera and then walked out of the green room while Kaarija vs Loreen was happening) We got robbed by juries. Ukraine placed well, both better and worse than I expected, but it wasn't a bad performance, so that's gucci Belgium did really well! The song was my guilty pleasure so that's nice. Also Australia in top 10 ayyyyyyyyy, hope they stay for next year too Graham Norton was singlehandedly the best host of Eurovision since Hans & Petra in 2016. How convenient that next year is 50 years from ABBA. I'm sure Sweden will put out a very professional ESC because their 2016 hosting was probably the best ESC I remember, both host- and production-wise. Still the best stage too. I'm looking forward to it!
-
Can't believe I'm saying this but damn, we did well. My top 10 should be: Spain, Finland, France, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Germany, Australia and Israel. Last place is probably UK, she sang really poorly sadly... Was positively surprised by Armenia!
-
ŠČ! For once I'm happy we chose to troll Eurovision with what is actually a brilliantly insightful act and probably the most tame I've ever seen Let 3 (they have a habit of performing obscenely), hope the lead singer recovers from the cold he caught. Otherwise, super happy both Serbia and Slovenia made it through as well, finally the ex-Yu gang is together! (bloc voting ftw! if the scands can, so can we) Would have loved seeing Latvia in the final. Beautiful song, sadly it was never gonna do well with the televoters. My top 5, in no order, is: - France: Beautifully elegant song in French, smooth as silk and with immense quality, this will do well with the juries but not televoting - Finland: Inverse here, will dominate televoting but juries won't rank it as high, I feel this is a genuine contender though - Spain: Magical song. I love stuff like this. Flamenco is a vibe. - Slovenia: These fellas ooze so much charisma I can't help but smile every time I watch them. Also they say 810,000 for some reason which is funny. Solid song. - Austria: POE POE POE POE POE. What's more to add? I'm of the opinion Loreen will win because of her name. The song's decent, don't get me wrong, but if Lithuania sent it, or if someone anonymous outside of Sweden sang it, it wouldn't be in question for the win. I've also seen we got a very good running order (25th), and the only song after us is a vocally horrid UK. I don't want to get my hopes up, but are we en route to getting our first top 10 since 2001???

WARNING - READ ESSENTIAL INFO AS THERE ARE FIVE FOUND SOFTLOCKS SO FAR IN THE SET. There might be more map-related softlocks (unconfirmed, but galileo and leo raised suspicions during Ironeagle 17), so tread carefully! Looking at you, 4shock :^) April, 2023 > The yearly standings > The Ironman Discord Server Standard Leaderboard [2] SURVIVED (55:46): Bdubzzz - If Asbadagba made a statement, Bdubzzz released an equivalent of Luther's 95 Theses. Electrifying. [2] SURVIVED (56:40): Asbadagba - Damn this run is quick. Beats even Bdubzzz's victory in the Ironeagle comp. Asbadagba makes a statement. [1] SURVIVED (59:51): mhrz - First green on the board for mhrz. Good things take time! [1] SURVIVED (1:00:06): Veinen - Always a pleasure to have you back. [2] SURVIVED (1:04:28): a.7.MAD - Someone with "Death Destroyer" in their nickname demolishing "Beyond Revival" is quite an irony. Hats off. [1] SURVIVED (1:13:03): LadyMistDragon - Consecutive survivals after consecutive second places; LadyMistDragon has become a serious contender. [2] SURVIVED (1:26:33): NaZa - Words have consequences, and I'll be damned if nobody is sussing me out at this point... [1] SURVIVED (1:26:36): ginc - All of three seconds, now that's close. Unlike the survival, which was rather comfortable. [3] SURVIVED (1:52:10): Suitepee - 1% HP hype; don't tell me what happens next!!! [1] MAP06: 4shockblast - Drops into the hole only to discover Mesoamericans didn't know electricity. (DNF) [1] MAP06: Maribo - Trips on an ashen step. Damn you, MAP06. (DNF) [1] MAP06: dt_ - Serious contender for Death of the Year... actually, this might be the best death I've ever seen in Ironman. Perfect at Doom. [1] MAP06: Roofi - Follows Maribo to the rockets. Follows Maribo into the chasm. (DNF) [1] MAP05: Pseudonaut - "Nah, the shotgunners are the easiest to take care of in this horde. No need to BFG them." [1] MAP05: Doomy__Doom - Your killed continued racking up kills after finishing you. That's the mark of the Beast alright. [1] MAP05: SCF - Haha! I was wondering when the first death to that archvile would come. [1] MAP05: AxeL - This for sure ranks among the most painful ways to lose a run. (DNF) [1] MAP05: Andromeda - Check those corners! [2] MAP05: Horus - Exceptional run considering its beginning. Got invaded at its end. [3] MAP05: MrZebub - That was a precise shot alright but that shotgunner hit beforehand was the catalyst here. [1] MAP05: Austinado - You only have one shot at Ironman, not two like with cyberdemons. :^) [1] MAP05: head_cannon - Don't you find it weird how you can't walk through spectres? [3] MAP05: Cynder_Thief - "One does not simply get a chainsaw." -those spectres, probably. [1] MAP04: joe-ilya - Death comes in twos, they say. [1] MAP04: Brainfreezzzzz - This death comes in twos as well, apparently. [1] MAP04: Helm - Runs out of health in the Armory. Oh, the irony. [1] MAP04: Crusader No Regret - Oh yeah, that berserk pack on MAP02 was a GAD moment. Reaching MAP04 is a blessing, then. [1] MAP03: BoxY - Don't ya love revenants? They always know when to appear! :^) [1] MAP03: Ludi - Spooked by hell knights iddled by flanking chaingunners. That trap is mean. [1] MAP03: ClumsyCryptid - Hey I died there in the Ironeagle! Copycat >:( [1] MAP03: Beginner - Follows Shep into the crack. That sounds far more ominous out of context. (DNF) [2] MAP03: NoisyVelvet - That was a nice pincer. Maybe even better than the one Hannibal did at Cannae. War strategy at its finest. [1] MAP03: TheShep - I had no idea that jump was even possible, though I knew that turning back was not possible. (DNF) [3] MAP03: I_Punch_Demons - "Damn." Decided to hug nobles for the rest of the run. [1] MAP02: Anima Zero - Oh, I bet the view's even better from there! (DNF) [1] MAP02: SuyaSS - Textbook pain elemental combat gone horribly wrong. Skull/10. [2] MAP02: Pegleg - So close to being Good at Doom. Plays hide and seek with the archvile after that. [3] MAP02: Alopecia_assassin - Runs out of bullets to freeze the spiders with. Hung on well for a debut, though! Prepared Leaderboard [#] MAP07: Anima Zero [#] MAP06: Horus [] to be updated... In April 2023 the DWIronman League dies to Beyond Revival (-complevel 9) by Fiend. Set in a "UAC installation in South America overrun by the forces of Hell," this mapset was among the runners-up in the 2010 Cacowards. Not only that, it was played in the Ironeagle challenge back in March 2020. Yours truly died to a comedy of errors on MAP03 and is keen to get revenge. Don't think the mapset is easy, though; it has its moments and really hits the fan from MAP03 onward. Probably. Haven't played it since except till the end of MAP03, but it should be fun. Essential Info Doom II (doom2.wad). Compatibility level 9, or "Boom (strict)" for ZDoom derivative ports. 7 maps. Time estimate (if survival): 60-120 minutes. SOFTLOCKS! This one is on MAP02. After you lower a wall in the beginning area to reveal two mancubi, you'll be able to take the lift up to the towers where there were sniper sergeants. If you ascend the eastern one, you might be able to see some rocks to your extreme left. DO NOT MAKE A JUMP FOR THEM. It might drop you into a very trippy inescapable pit. In the computer room with the switch leading up to the yellow key in MAP03, it seems that it's barely possible to jump through a crack in the wall. Don't. It's not a secret. At least the blue key in MAP05 sometimes does not teleport. Due to the other keys also teleporting in, they might have a similar issue. The following two are for MAP06. On the backside of the pyramid you see near the start of the map is a hole. DO NOT ENTER IT! A lift that's supposed to take you out is not triggered correctly (W1 instead of SR action), so there's no way to lower it. The teleporter at the bottom of the lava "moat" around the pyramid in said map has no sector tagged as a destination, so it's functionally useless. > Download Beyond Revival prboom-plus.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file revival.wad -complevel 9 -skill 4 -record demo_name.lmp -warp Rules: Previous threads:

Leaderboard updated! Only took me a further week, but that's due to objective reasoning. @Bdubzzz wins it on the 25th hour (for the second successive month) and moves relatively clear from @LadyMistDragon on the yearly standings. LadyMistDragon just barely missed out on the Top 5 this month, which might be a problem as @Asbadagba, who was placed first most of this month, got 2nd and is creeping closer to 2nd on the yearly board as well. Despite the best death in the history of the League, @dt_ keeps in the Top 5 on the standings, while @Death Destroyer - 4.7m4d achieves their first Top 5 placing in a challenge, just behind @Veinen who placed one spot higher. What a way to return for both, and what a way for @mhrz to achieve their first survival, getting only their second Top 3 result and rising 10 places on the standings! @Suitepee also reclaims his place in the Top 10 with a confident survival (first time since 2017 that you survived 3 months in a year!), while yours truly made up 5 places. I swear it's not a fix. Meanwhile, @Pegleg finishes second-to-last (but not last!) for the fourth month in a row, or rather in 6 out of 7 last challenges Pegleg faced. Hey, at least it's not last! ... speaking of, there's been no repeat last places so far this year, which is an encouraging trend! Glad to see so many debutants this month, and I hope to see you all at dt_'s challenge this month too!

Ok, having calmed down a bit... it's not necessarily utter bullshit. While the difficulty is frontloaded, when you get to know most of the abundant monsters (which happens around MAP05-06), it seems to become better-paced and more manageable, though that might just be the adaptation.
-
UTTER BULLSHIT ON EVERY FRONT Category 2, died on MAP07 because who the fuck does something like this in the entire set like this? Why the fuck is it introduced like this? What the actual fuck? The worst part is that the set was FINALLY starting to open up on MAP06, thoroughly enjoyable map, that was. And then they do THIS. I have no words. I had foreknowledge of the first two maps and the final map of the set because both in spring last year and in January this year I've given it a whirl to reassess whether I want it in the DWIL. I don't think I do. ironeagle_may23_naza.zip

What was the best "Inside a computer" mod you've played?
NaZa replied to Shakariki Heisenberg's topic in Doom General
Into the Code by Obsidian has you clean the PC from viruses, I think. -
Ascended an elevator a tic too early for the rockets to subside. MAP02, category 1. Glad to make it that far tbh, but got robbed as I clutched that fight with 4 HP and was about to make an insane recovery. Oh well. Very slow gameplay, I am always over-the-top cautious in mapsets with gameplay changes (which I generally don't enjoy) dwironman_may23_naza.zip

Three seconds, damn. Now that's a miniscule difference for 86 minutes of playtime! Well played and grats on yet another survival! I'll update the OP in a few hours, and @dt_ will post next month's challenge soon as well!
-
I pretty much organize them only by letters, the same way as is on /idgames. So you have 0-9, a-c, d-f, g-i, j-l, m-o, p-r, s-u and v-z (I think it's like that). Then there's a separate directory for WADs I made, and another batch for various speedmapping sessions because they tend to clog the folders if in the main ones.

Hot damn.

Afaik Lazarevenant (though it's still a 13 map WIP) uses exclusively .MOD music.
