  1. I pity those who've never had pho before.

Best part is that it's usually served cool enough to eat, but hot enough to still steep the ingredients, and you're also usually given a plate of extra veggies to add in like mint and jalepenos. Throw all of this together and unless you scarf it down, the flavor actually slowly changes over the course of a bowl.

  2. "Monster presses use", they can do that too ?

Specially, this causes the special to be activated when an actor that has the CANUSEWALLS flag moves into the line, which is part of the Monster flag combo so almost all monsters have it enabled by default. Though, if you heavily use custom monsters, you can remove it from some of them to create situation where, say, enemy soldiers and robots can open doors, but not attack dogs.

  4. Y'know, on the anime girl avatars, I wonder what the percentage of girls is with the peeps who have 'em. It feels like on most internet forums, that's always a smaller number, but on here it definitely feels like a not-insignificant amount of the guys actually have animephobia or whatever, while more of the rest just pick something else.

Yeah, it's actually pretty common. It's rare for a non-anime fan to choose one, but there really is no shortage of those on the internet.

It really isn't, unless you are completely unable to talk to computers.

But in that case, a lot of things involving computers must be a pain in the ass, so ...

  12. I've been wanting to just muck around with Doom's source code for a while now, but it's been a struggle. Namely, I can't really find a source code that a. doesn't add a bunch of additional features past Boom extensions, b. is still modern enough that some framework doesn't need to manually replaced ( although I'm the least certain about this ), and c. has set up instructions that exist and aren't several magnitudes out of date.

Am I just missing an obvious choice, or am I just being too picky for the amount of commitment I'm willing to go through to get started?

    1. Arctangent

      Arctangent

That's the one I've attempted the most, but three different instruction sets later and the closest I've gotten is compiling executables that only respond to being ran when DLLs are missing.

Not because I didn't move those DLLs into the folder, mind. It's just that when chocolate-doom.exe didn't pop up those error messages, it ... I'm not sure what. A window never pops up. I don't even know if it's instantaneously closing or what, because the only sign that my computer even tries to run it is my cursor going into that "loading" animation for a short time.

  13. With the "status" seemingly being more popular than "blogs" I've always found Doomworld user openness kind of strange, ie people posting pics of themselves and being forward with who they are. Do that at zandronum and this is what you get

@Linguica It's really more appropriate to say that Zandronum's community is an utter shit hole.

  14. It's a miracle..!

So to recap: this breakable fixtures system I've been rambling about for the past days has two main components: a linedef that registers direct hitscan attacks and a nearby interactive mapspot that registers radius damage. The latter is done by the tried and tested method of giving this (invisible) mapspot a radius of 0, so that it becomes untargetable but still subject to blast damage.

EE only has the "impact" flag for linedef activation, not the "missile" one. That means that players wielding the plasma rifle are out of luck: the mapspot only registers blast damage; the linedef only hitscans and never projectiles. And I was fully prepared to handwave this by giving the usual spiel that "energy weapons don't shatter stuff", etc.

    So I thought.

Until, during testing of E2M1, some breakable glass was hit by plasma fire and...shattered as a result.  Wha..? Some debugging later, it turns out the mapspot is responsible for registering a projectile hit, despite the fact it is not / can not be targeted.

Don't get me wrong: I'm absolutely delighted that this works. But I have NO CLUE how this is even possible.

    1. Arctangent

      Arctangent

Unless Eternity has an equivalent to the VULNERABLE flag from ZDoom's Decorate, I think the only way for something that gets damaged by explosions but not projectiles is for it to have 0 height ... and I wouldn't be surprised if some ports ( or, heck, even vanilla ) allow projectiles to collide with 0 height actors, because the actor still has a z-height.

So, while I can't say I know what's happening from experience with Eternity, it's not improbable at all for the mapspot to be tall enough for projectiles be able to collide with and damage it. It would surprise me, since a mapspot having significant height is kinda weird to me, but if it's a type of mapspot specifically meant for reacting to projectiles and explosion, then it makes sense and isn't really strange.

Though it would seem more than a bit cumbersome to use, considering actor hitboxes are axis-aligned squares from the top-down in basically every source port, and a demo-compat source port changing that is a concept that's pretty bizarre to me.

Not really. I tried watching the anime of it a while back, though, and I'm pretty familiar with a bunch of KEY characters anyway, even if the only visual novel of their's I've actually gone through is a couple CLANNAD routes and, if you can even count it, part of the intro to Little Busters!.

  17. Does anyone know about any decently powerful video editing software for Windows with a UI that isn't utter ass? I find Adobe Premiere dreadful to use, and while Final Cut actually looks pretty straight-forward it's also for Mac.

Anyone have any ideas, or am I just stuck with struggling through Premiere?

The fact that they're exhibiting it with its own damn custom control panel makes me want to vomit blood more than Premiere has.

  20. Hi folks! This is honestly a pretty crummy subject to have to talk about in a big public forum post, but it's long overdue that I get this off my chest, so I'll make this quick and get it over with:

I'm a transgender woman and I'm in the process of undergoing HRT. This is a really exciting and important thing for me, and the past year and a half of my life has already been way better for it. It also isn't a decision that was made lightly -- on the contrary, it's been the scariest and most difficult thing I've ever had to do in my life.

Those of you who already know have been tremendously supportive beyond my wildest expectations, and I feel extremely fortunate to have made such amazing friends here. The Doom community is a pretty awesome place. With your help and reassurance, this post was way less stressful to make, so thank you!

To everyone else who's just hearing about this now, I'm not going to be a different person than you've known on the forums since forever. This is who I've always been, something I was internally grappling with even before I registered here on Doomworld a long as heck time ago. So my posting will still be as lousy as you've come to expect, etc, etc.

Given the problems that have been had with some other threads in recent memory, I'm just going to remind everyone that this is a personal blog thread and not a gender politics debate. With that said, I realize that this is a subject that's unfamiliar to a lot of people, so questions are welcome, just please be respectful. Thanks!

That actually depends on how closely you're interacting with them and how open they are. Even if they aren't quite "out," there's stuff that they can open up about that can hint towards them being trans, though, obviously it's better to keep the discussion about that as vague as they're keeping it, especially if it's happening outside of private conversation, since, well, outing someone without their permission is a pretty big faux pas.
