    Doom (2016) Sales

Right, because the console war stuff has none of those attributes. PC gamers tend to be a lot more informed about games, are exposed to more critical analyses of them, have more choice and control over what they buy and do with their games, and are more invested in the culture of videogames. If they are more "argumentative," it is because they are more likely to think about games as a part of who they are rather than just something they play.

    Doom (2016) Sales

These figures don't seem very good. For reference, RAGE sold over 250,000 copies on 360 in its first week according to vgchartz: http://www.vgchartz.com/game/25458/rage/USA/

Tips on attempting to read Finnegans Wake?

This is your best bet, OP, for getting something out of it. Modernists like Joyce weren't so interested in communicating meaning, plot, or narrative, as they were in experimenting with the material fabric of language. One of the interesting things about FW is how sight and sound play off each other. You see one phrase, then read it aloud and find it sounds like another word or idea. Distant, seemingly totally unrelated thoughts come together through puns or visual tricks. One of the biggest influences here is Freud, who theorized dreams and the unconscious as expressing repressed memories and desires through verbal play and slips of the tongue/pen. FW is in many ways a literary attempt to plumb the depths of the human psyche by creating a text of puns and word plays linking our oldest stories (like the Bible) with modern-day slang, etc.

Roundtable with Pete Hines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=133&v=lgUB8aH9eZI Highlights: "Everything that we're doing on the mod side is going to be through SnapMap" You will not be able to create outdoor spaces with SnapMap. You will not be able to create large open spaces like in the opening of the demo with SnapMap. SnapMap only does smaller interior spaces. PC will not receive additional modding tools beyond SnapMap.

    The Next Doom

Yes. I wish they hadn't cut so far away from the horror elements of 3. Doom should always be a little bit scary.

    DOOM - User Reviews

There's a lot of positive talk surrounding this game, so I convinced myself, against my better judgment, to give it a go. I am deeply regretting my purchase. People are saying this is like a modern Doom. And in some ways, that's true. It is fast-paced, has lots of action, and you use a shotgun a lot. But combat-wise and level-design-wise, it doesn't remind me much of Doom at all. In Doom, every encounter was a carefully designed little trap that you had to solve. For example, the third level of Doom 2 there's the shotgun zombies at the start behind the moving metal shutter. It's a simple moment to get through, but along with countless other moments like that, it adds up to being put down inside of that cube-puzzle from Hellraiser. It's dream-like and nonsensical level-design, but that is what makes it so compelling and menacing. This new Doom is nothing like that. Rather than facing a series of carefully crafted traps/puzzles, you go from combat arena to combat arena where you must defeat wave after wave of enemies that enter the space through teleportation. There is no morphing level geometry, no falling of walls or other structures to reveal new terrors. None of it's very clever or requires much problem-solving. You just blast and blast enemies in the arena while dodging their projectices until it's over. Yes, that is an aspect of the original Doom too, but only one of many. This game takes one feature of the original Doom, and stretches it out into a whole game. The result is something dull, methodical, and boring. I've heard a lot of people describe the original Doom as a "mindless shooter" recently, and have used that interpretation to validate the new Doom as a return to form. I couldn't disagree more. The first Doom was anything but mindless. Every level was a unique space, filled with unique traps and puzzles to negotiate. A ton of thought went into the character of each map, and that thought and care were a big part of what made the game so good. The arenas in new Doom, by contrast, are for all intents and purposes the same scenario repeated again and again, with minor variations and new demons added over time. Unless you have a high threshold for repetition, this gets boring fast. The fact that the game practically begs you glory kill everything too doesn't help things at all. I suppose if all Doom ever was to you was a game about shooting demons with shotguns, then this game will impress you. If what you remember about Doom was the blend of surreal level design, traps, puzzles, and action, then the new Doom is probably going to disappoint. Its UAC facilities are generic and its imagining of hell, pedestrian. I had high hopes for this game starting out. But what id gave us was the dumbest interpretation of Doom possible. A game that is nothing more than shooting demons in the face over and over again. Doom was so much more than just that.

Bethesda lied to us, you can't create proper single player maps

All those pre-release posts about how "we'll fix whatever we don't like about the game in our own SnapMap levels" seem a little naive now.

    My thoughts on the game!

Lol. You have called every person who has stated the simple truth about glory kills and health/ammo/XP "retards" and "idiots" (including people who have played the game) for months on this forum. Thanks for the laugh buddy, and I'm sorry your delusion is crumbling.

Impressions from NeoGaf (possible minor spoilers)

Glory Kills are as optional as leveling up is in a Souls game. You don't have to, and it provides a self-imposed challenge if you don't, but at the cost of missing out on bonuses and upgrades (and extra health and ammo in the case of Doom). It's a core mechanic and central to the gameplay. Watch any stream and you see enemies getting stunned and flashing constantly (which is how they indicate they can be glory killed). You can turn off the flashing if it bothers you, but the enemies will still be swaying like their drunk all the time. Personally, I don't like it. Others like it and that's fine. But no amount of denial or brain-washing is going to change the fact that Glory Kills are a big part of new Doom.

No early Doom review copies for anyone

First, the fact that you are keeping tabs on posts from me that are months old in order to catch me in some contradiction is simply pathetic and borders on stalker behavior. Secondly, all you've accomplished here is to demonstrate your own inability to read precisely and with nuance. Yes, I said there is no such thing as a purely objective review. That does not mean that reviews should dispense with all objectivity completely. In the case of the GI article, I was pointing out how sensationalized the description of the game was and that it sounded less like a reasoned opinion than it did an advertisement. I said I thought a professional article should be "MORE objective or measured." That's a comparative statement and can only be understood in relation to what I was comparing it with. There's no contradiction in my opinions here if you take the time to read what I'm saying and understand it. But instead, you're trying to score points or exact some revenge on me by taking things out of context. And all because I've criticized a game that you like and bruised your ego in doing so.

No early Doom review copies for anyone

To be "as objective as possible" you would have to stick to a cold description of the formal features of game, without any hint as to their quality/feel. For example, Doom is a first-person-shooter. You move your character forward, backward, and side-to-side. You can also turn your character clockwise and counterclockwise. Once upon a time, this was known as an "instruction manual." And this is what you are asking for to be the standard for "reviews."

Anybody seen Nemesis? If not, and you like b-action movies, you should really check it out. This shoot-out, for example: https://youtu.be/alkPjVXDWfU?t=49m21s From the director of the Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle, Cyborg, FYI.

    Does "Argent D'Nur" mean something?

Argent is French for money. d' is a contraction of de: in, of, or from. nur is German meaning only. So Doomguy comes from a place where they are only interested in money. Which makes perfect sense when you think about it.

    Doom stream

8 hours or 20 hours, the real question is, of what? From what I saw, the typical gameplay loop was: move through a few corridors, enter one of those "skate park" arenas, activate some trigger, and then fight off a several scripted waves of enemies to open the exit. I saw one boss fight, the one with the twin golems or whatever they were supposed to be, and it reminded me of Metroid Prime (sans eerie atmosphere) more than anything. The whole tone of that was off, and didn't remind me of Doom at all.
