  1. I'm making a texture WAD
    A few people have been given preview/alpha access. This thread serves to keep them up to date on the changes and additions that happen.

    The WAD is not publicly available at this time. This is a work log, not a not a show-off thread.

    I work on this only sporadically. There is no specific project being developed using these textures. I have some ideas and test them out in maps, but there's zero promise any of that will ever materialize. Making textures is a therapeutic endeavor.

    • ODOORA has been redone from scratch. The new version supports using it for 64, 96 and 128 tall doors and comes in two additional colors.
    • Some new OMRBLI9* textures using existing patches.
    • New: SKY15 is a new attempt at using DOOM's few yellows in a sky, this time 1024x200 and with some mountains. It's looking better than the old SKY8 and SKY8B but still kinda painful.
    • New: ORAILA11 and ORAILA21. I should do slanted versions of these too, for stairs.
    • New: OSLNTA10 adds a dirty dark gray version of this FLAT.
    • New: OCONCE 05 and 06, dark BROWN96-ish version.
    • New: OMRBLG43 was in the WAD but not as a texture, fixed this.
    • New: OFENCC now comes in 96 and 64 tall varieties.
    • New: OWOODI is a full set of wood textures based on what used to be OWOODE24. If you used that before, your replacement is OWOODI04.
    • New: OMRBLL is a very light and "palatial" white-ish marble, with some designs not available in the other marble series.
    • New: OMRBLL FLATs, 5 varieties
    • New light FLATs! Nothing fancy really, but at least it's a start:
    • —OLGHTD, 3 colors in 2 directions
    • —OLGHTE, 6 colors
    • —OLGHTF, 6 colors in 2 directions (OK this is not a very inventive set but hey, they work)
    • New: OLGHTF also added as wall textures
    • Changed all seven varieties of OGRAT?03 to a slightly lighter grey, as they were too close to the other colors.
    • Removed some unused skies that were imported as single 1024x240 slabs, since they broke vanilla and chocolate Doom.
    Current focus
    There's lots of FLATs needed to match all the different walls, and I still have some older textures that need to be touched up slightly. Other than that I have some funamentals missing still: Liquids, computer panels, switches, teleporters, crates.

    332 FLATs, 563 texture patches.

    • New: OCONCP, concrete with orange trim inspired by some parking garage I saw in New Orleans.
    • New: OLGHTB is sort of placeholder 16x64 tech lights in a generic Quake 2 style. I hope to refine these later, specifically what materials/textures they're built into. 8 colors.
    • New: OLGHTC are more Q2 inspired industrial lights but I think these turned out pretty terrific.
    • New: OSPRTC01 is some gritty medieval iron thing I had forgotten.
    • New: OSPRTD is rusty with various patterns, only 32w columns now but will make other varieties. Just got it in here to test in-game.
    • New: OSPRTE is a dark dirty grey series with some similar patterns to D but also some new ones. Will make more widths here too, wanted to really nail the 32w ones first. OLGHTC are based on this series.
    • New: ONDSTI are based on the material from OSPRTE but with patterns more similar to ONDST E, F, G. Also includes lights from OLGHTC.
    • New: OMETLA is a 32px high metal-ish thing with sunken rivets that looks pretty dope. Should make another color maybe, but one UAC-Ultra level gritty blackened one and one more shiny and silvery for now.
    Current focus
    Finally some lights and some supports, but I'm far from done. OSPRTB gets to live another round since I ended up doing other colors instead.

    I tried drawing some vines but my first attempt didn't cut it.

    40 new wall patches for 532 in total.

    I'm finally back from a complete lap around the planet (!) so not a huge amount of progress but even on my laptop I've been able to churn out some stuff:
    • Redid OCONCD since the bump pattern was a bit of a failed experiment. Ended up redrawing a lot of the actual surface too and feel it's much improved now
    • Redid OMRBLG since it was too similar to OMRBLA. The G set is now a lighter green, more like the vanilla textures (but still a shade darker). The symbols/things on 29 aren't working too well, but left them in as placeholders for now
    • New: ONDST E, F and G got a 92 version, inspired by BTSX E2's METBRW12/METGRY12
    • New: OFENCB rusty fence with spear headed tips, in 2 heights (old texture I had forgotten to include)
    • New: OFENCC01 is a dark rusty transparent chainlink-style texture. Bigger holes than OFENC A and B.
    • New: Something that was needed for a long time: 50 new generic FLATs! I spent a lot of time tweaking these, including hand pixeling some stuff and making sure all the color varieties are useful. They're not just recolored versions either, each one was crafted individually so that the material texture and the bump pattern matched the color:
    • —O1DMDA is 45° angle large squares (hence DMD = "diamond"), kind of 64x64 on its edge
    • —O2DMDA is 2 "diamonds" wide per FLAT, sort of equivalent to 32x32. Maybe the pattern on OIRONF91 is better, since that allows for an easy light cutout in the center. I should probably offset the O2DMDA series to be aligned this way
    • —O4DMDA is 4 diamonds, or similar to 16x16
    • ——this also made me rename O3DMDB since that series was supposed to be called O5DMDA
    • —OBRCKX are small diagonal bricks that aren't based on any given wall texture, hence the X
    • —OSLNTA are slanted 32x32 tiles, at 22.5° angle (yes, they tile) in 9 color varieties
    • —OTL16A are standard 16x16 tiles but kinda fat and bumpy looking, intended more for ceilings than floors (but both work, obviously)
    • —OTL32A as above but 32x32, more floor friendly than OTL16. At some point I'll probably make B varieties that are flatter looking
    Current focus
    I know, I know… lights. I should probably jut do a bunch of generic Q2 style lights as placeholders, the kinds seen in BTSX etc.

    Sill working on the OSPRTB makeover. It will result in several color varieties and I might remove variations 13, 30 and 33. If you've used this set, you might need to do some search & replace later.

    Since I redid OCONCD I really should give OCONCA the same treatment. It's simply not a good set right now, but there needs to be some bright concrete too.

    Speaking of concrete, F and G should maybe be the same darkness—I'm thinking G looks better. And OCONCJ has waaaay too much highlight on the upper edge. Tried redoing it from the source photo but the edit is quite elaborate so I gave up, for now.

    OMRBLF might get killed and replaced with a new series of bright green marble.

    302 FLATs, 492 texture patches.

    Been traveling since the 14th so not a lot got done. This update coming at ya from Singapore:
    • New: ONDSTH started out as an attempt to recreate something like SPACEW4, ended up making some color variations. Not sure if these should come in other pattern variations
    • New: OCONCO series is one I'm very happy with, can't decide if I keep both 01 and 02: They're very similar but both are nice. I made orange and blue versions too but didn't add them in the WAD yet
    • New: Added some windows to OBRCKF for Sverre. Will make more windowed stuff when I have time
    Current focus
    Im' reworing the entire OSPRTB series, the consistency isn't good enough among them and some of the rivet design looks wonky. This has ballooned into a huge set of support textures in various materials so expect some 40+ textures once I feel it's on a good place. Also working on more windows, finishing some lights, and need to go over FLATs and re-do a bunch of wonky ones and create more generic patterns.

    Since this is the first change log entry, I should perhaps point out these are changes since Jan 28-ish:
    • Some SKY work:
    • —SKY3 is now chopped up to be vanilla friendly at 1024x200. Will update with a version where the hills don't have any grey in them, matching the warm sky better
    • —SKY5 now has an orange sky and warm light on the hills, also vanilla adapted at 1024x200 but needs non-vanilla sky transfer for usage
    • —SKY12 and SKY12B added, but might only use the latter with its grey sky. Both 1024x200
    • —SKY9 probably replaces SKY12 since it has a nice red-to-orange gradient that works even better. 1024x200 as usual. Some scattered orange pixels on the hills will be fixed in a later update
    • —SKY4 and SKY4B have been renamed SKY8 and SKY8B. Might kill these: Only 512x128 and the extremely limited yellow palette gives too much banding and artifacts
    • OCONCL was updated with a better type of bump shading to accentuate the contours slightly more
    • New: ODOORB series of wooden doors with satanic/occult symbols
    • New: ODOORC series of color coded (keyed) wood doors with gargoyle and pentagram
    • New: OBKMTA33 is a 64x64 version of this series
    • New: OBRCKO series 16px high bricks, 3 varieties. 256x128
    • New: OBRCKP series 16px high bricks, 3 varieties. 128x128. Also added as FLATs
    • New: ONDST E, F and G series. Those ending in 90 are 48/16/24/32/8px high so you can use them as trim for lots of stuff
    • New: OBKMTD, lot of variations of black metal with and without rivets
    • New: OSTCCA01, Quake-style stucco wall inspired by Bloodstain map18. Might do more variations later
    • New: OIROND54, this theme needed a 16x32 version
    • New: OBRCKL, 32px high bricks of rough stone, including dark, medium and hellish red versions plus black iron pentagram decorations
    • New FLAT: O3DMDB02, brown version of 01
    • New FLAT: ODIAGA02, light, clean grey version of 01
    • New FLATs: OMRBLD, 4 varieties of this hellish red marble theme
    • New FLATs: ODMNDA, 6 varieties of this diamond-based pattern
    • New FLATs: OBSKTA, 2 varieties of "basket weave" brick tiling
    • New FLATs: OQSLPA, 3 varieties of a Quake inspired 32x32 non-slip industrial floor. Not entirely happy with these yet, will refine later
    • New FLATs: OMRLTA, 3 colors of this intricate pattern. Intended for a palace type environment
    • New FLATs: OGRVLA, 2 variations on gravel. Probably needs more tweaking
    250 FLATs, 473 texture patches.

    Current focus
    I began looking at some of the ideas and themes I did for Darkening E2 18 years ago, there are some good ideas there that could be revisited with my current skills. D2E2 also had a lot more bright textures which this set could use. All those old ones look like shit though, I will make new ones from scratch.

    I spent some time looking at textures to migrate over from an older WAD. Some are now in OTEX but others need tweaking even be recreated from scratch. Goal is to have a close equivalent of everything from odiumres.wad in otex.wad eventually. (Derek, you're the only one that would care I guess :-)

    Began working on some cleaner sci-fi techbase type panels. Slow progess, it's not my forte.

    Some lights for both textures and FLATs are coming soon-ish.

      Strike while the iron is hot. Better to be productive when you're in the mood than not at all.

      As for productivity in general. I force myself to work on a hobby 2 hours a day even when I don't feel like it. I've found that no matter how much I don't want to be productive, after the first ten minutes, I get engrossed and that just becomes life for 2+ hours.
