      I'd recommend replacing the two 1GB sticks with 2GB sticks, assuming you buy the right ones. A total of 4GB of RAM is better than 2GB.

      I have mixed and matched brands, speed, sizes(**), models, and ages for decades and I have never run into any problems. Due to the way standards work the RAM sticks are meant to be compatible for a reason.

      The common causes of BSODs/Kernel Panics/Kernel EXPLOSIONS:

      • Damaged memory, which loses the contents which are stored with incorrect values.
      • PCI/PCI-X/PCI-e/AGP/IEEE 1394 (in PCI mode) have full access to your memory bus, so badly written drivers and/or badly written firmware can wreak absolute havok in system memory. IOMMU fixes this trouble however availability varies, and in IOMMU land x86 is last place (PowerPC and SPARC CPUs it had for quite some time). Your OS must be capable of using IOMMU however. Also note that police forces have access to plug and play compatible PCI/IEEE 1384 devices (assuming the target hardware actually has working plug and play, and inserting cards does not cause a giant spark/short to occur) to read your entire contents of memory.
      • Kernel software bugs.
      • IRQs if the system hardware is funny, or if the OS could care less which IRQs it gets even if they are invalid.
      (**) Some systems have RAM in pairs or quads, which means all paired slots must use the same amount of memory, otherwise they will not work properly (if at all). This is a common case for server systems, RIMM based systems, multi-CPU systems where multiple domains are possible.

      Interesting. My experience has been the exact opposite, and whenever I've mixed and matched memory there's always been some kind of a problem. But maybe my experience is the exception rather than the rule. It's entirely possible that I just didn't configure something properly.
