  1. happy birthday to me

  2. Some thoughts on Marathon:

-The floaty movement system is the most blatantly offensive aspect of the game. Unfortunately, it logically follows that the maps would've been designed around it, and trying to improve it will only break the game.

-I think half of the complaints about Marathon's level design can be traced to people trying to play Marathon as if it's Doom and paying little attention to the terminals, because in all of the maps I've replayed so far (and Marathon's maps are pretty big), I found myself essentially following a straight line from objective to objective. That being said, Marathon's level design does have some pretty serious problems.

-The most immediate problem that comes to mind is that there are virtually no recognizable landmarks in any of Marathon's maps whatsoever. In Doom, all areas of each map were very distinct from oneanother while still being part of a unified whole. In Marathon, all areas of every map had roughly the same color scheme and lighting levels with very little contrast.

-Marathon's maps were mostly hallways with little in the way of height variation, which offered little to no opportunity to engage enemies in creative ways in addition to adding to the visual monotony.

-The texturing scheme is downright horrific. Two completely different textures on the same wall with no transitions does not look good, especially when they aren't even aligned. This is a shame because quite a few of Marathon's textures are actually reaaaaaaaally nice.

-The enemies were all very boring to fight and ranged from cannon fodder to doors with health. There's little in the way of creative enemy placement, and the enemies in many areas feel like they were simply plopped down haphazardly to give the players something to do.

-I understand the mentality behind having save terminals scattered throughout the level rather than allowing the player to save wherever he likes, but I completely disagree with it.

-Overall, the combat and level design feel like they were done with the sole purpose of connecting terminals together in order to advance the plot. That being said, Marathon's plot is fantastic and in my opinion is enough to carry the game by itself, which is no small feat.

-In order to change settings, the player has to quit the game entirely. There is no excuse for this.

-I have no problem with Marathon's health system, but I think it's worth pointing out that Doom's "health-and-armor-bonuses-as-coins" item placement added an extra fun factor that Marathon missed out on.

Overall, I think Marathon is worth a play, but only for the plot and absolutely nothing else.

@Marnetstapler It's a Marathon Infinity screenshot. The mappack it's from is Infra Apogee, which has some maps that use only Marathon 1 textures. http://simplici7y.com/items/infra-apogee

Yeah, Marathon's textures are quite nice and can be used to make really cool looking maps.

  4. Well shit, I'm 18 years old today. I'm apparently an adult now. toot.gif

  5. Things have been hectic the last few months as we all know, politics, life and just general things for everybody- myself included...Even if at the moment it's still the early stages...small steps you know?

Only recently have been able to be a little open about these kinds of things given the subject but thanks to others with support I've been able to at least be more comfortable...even if it's a bit at a time. This has all been kept away for years and years...so please forgive my nerves and anxious ramblings.

Basically I'm asking if it would be okay to refer to me as female from now?

For some it might be a surprise, and others maybe not so- and a few of you already know and have been awesome in helping me with said support I mentioned earlier- of course I've had it from others from a couple other places and other close friends online I've know and trusted for years...but this community is (mostly :P) awesome and I know you are very diverse and welcoming peoples!

I'm not here to poke with a stick each time or get offended if somebody forgets or gets it wrong at first- but this is more just to get this out there in the open. I'll try and answer anything if you're curious but again it's early days and there are going to be many barriers I still need to beat and overcome.

It's not fully in plan just yet...again so much I need to think about...so much to say and do...it's very difficult for me and I don't just want to, but I kind of NEED to get these kinds of things off my chest if I'm going to be serious about this.

Here is a picture of a giraffe because those are cool. Giraffes are cool you dig?

Thanks everybody and keep being amazing! <3
    ..it's past 6am and I need to sleep...really

  6. This is a bit late by now, but I decided to make a thread dedicated to my tech stuff. So off we go I guess.

I recently got two of the PC parts here. 16 gigs of ram from Avexir (Core series) and a Gigabyte B150M-DS3H motherboard. Here's a picture of them:

More to be posted here (on this thread).

I was actually unaware that people are starting to go with 16 GB of ram now, heh. I noticed just yesterday that the guy I always consult for PC gaming hardware has recently started using 16 GB ram too. So yeah, my bad.

I hope you didn't waste your parents' money on 16 gigs of ram just for gaming.

  8. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll have anything ready to release by that time, unlike last year. Sorry!

I guess I could at least show something, though some have already seen it. I don't think I posted it on DW though:

Need to thing place this, then get going on the remaining maps.

Man, cyan and pink is the best color combo.

      Happy birthday in advance, AD!

  10. Hi folks! This is honestly a pretty crummy subject to have to talk about in a big public forum post, but it's long overdue that I get this off my chest, so I'll make this quick and get it over with:

I'm a transgender woman and I'm in the process of undergoing HRT. This is a really exciting and important thing for me, and the past year and a half of my life has already been way better for it. It also isn't a decision that was made lightly -- on the contrary, it's been the scariest and most difficult thing I've ever had to do in my life.

Those of you who already know have been tremendously supportive beyond my wildest expectations, and I feel extremely fortunate to have made such amazing friends here. The Doom community is a pretty awesome place. With your help and reassurance, this post was way less stressful to make, so thank you!

To everyone else who's just hearing about this now, I'm not going to be a different person than you've known on the forums since forever. This is who I've always been, something I was internally grappling with even before I registered here on Doomworld a long as heck time ago. So my posting will still be as lousy as you've come to expect, etc, etc.

Given the problems that have been had with some other threads in recent memory, I'm just going to remind everyone that this is a personal blog thread and not a gender politics debate. With that said, I realize that this is a subject that's unfamiliar to a lot of people, so questions are welcome, just please be respectful. Thanks!

    Sarah
