  1. Because it's fun-fun-fun <3 It's simple, yet fascinating at the same time how the game deep in its code works (like the monsters behavior and its flaws, operations within game tic etc). Moreover, it's easy and fun to mod - nowadays we have very versatile programs to edit wad lumps and create maps. And practicelly can be played almost on every PC. By the way Heheh, try Tetris the GrandMaster clones like Texmaster or Heboris. EDIT: Ah yes, I forgot to mention that shotguns in Doom are the only shotguns in video games that give me most satisfaction to use them. Shotgun acts like a real shotgun, it's really good in mid-range, occasionaly for sniping and conserving ammo. While SSG is the best shotgun fitting the short-range shotgun trope - it punches hard, has almost the damage as Rocket Launcher and has very cool shot and reloading sounds. Combined with running so fast like Sonic it makes you the close-quarters-combat killing machine. Just delicious.

    The Doom Confessional Booth

OPL in ZDoom, when set both to MAME OPL2 and 8 channels, sounds best from all source ports and even Vanilla executive. It's one of the reasons why I still play vanilla maps on ZDoom.

    The Logic of the Archvile

For me it looks like Archvile is gathering energy in form of fire whirl surrounding the target. Once it's ready, assembled energy goes directly into target at once, causing explosion, therefore the famous AV-jump

So, which Doomguy name do you prefer?

Like many of you, I think naming him Flynn Taggart is rather dull. The problem is, there are many people who call him Flynn Taggart in main games. I really like the primal concept of supposing to be 'you'. Personally it makes me more immersed in these games. I bet if I get VR set someday, then this immersion will be up to eleven. Otherwise, I refer this character in this forum and alike as Doomguy. While I live in country where english is not native language, I call him something like Hero from Doom to people in real life.

    The Doom Confessional Booth

I found out just recently how exactly armor protection works. Previously I thought that any armor type absorbs damage by half. Therefore I havent't cared about megarmor to be changed by green armor. Must be dumb, but I really didn't observe the digits in hud that much how they were reduced by taking damage.

    Classic id Software shooters bundle

Thank you very much for this info. I bought this bundle few hours ago and I'm very happy with that. I only had to struggle with BGM to rip off from enclosed CD images. But anyway everything's ok.

    Classic id Software shooters bundle

Thanks for the answer. Some reviews for Quake on GoG mentioned about lack of BGM. Yet I heard that Wolf3D could be altered. That's why 'hysteria' forced me to ask. I'd love to get pure, original games.

    The Doom Confessional Booth

Especially when I tried to recreate vanilla experience.. on ZDoom, by tinkering config file really hard :P To be honest it was fairly close, but nothing compared to Chocolate Doom. I guess I did this because of its good support of gamepads. But then I found out later I can do the same.. with something like Joy2Key or Xpadder.

most emotional parts of Doom 64?

It's so gorgeus that while D64 the same gameplay as PC version offers, I feel much more immersed on it, probably because of it's graphics, OST and atmosphere at all. Most emotional part? There are many. I remember the moment when after playing PC versions for a while I stepped for first time to D64. Staging area... the darkness, colored lighting and this particular music made me really anxious and lonesome. I like very much some first maps when for a moment you witnessed sectors shapping floors and platforms nicely. Alpha Quadrant.. I'm sure there are many people who are scared of this map. Particularly this pitch black pit if you accidently fall into. I've felt so helpless, I knew it wasn't worth struggling with Spectres. The music it played in Altar of Pain first. It's so disturbing that after hearing it for the first time it took me some time to play D64 again. In the Void - this map makes you more lonesome. It gives a feeling there's really nothing beyond this fog. Just you on few platforms and bridges. I felt a relieve when I managed to evade Lost Souls and Elementals and escaped to next map. Even when the game still made me anxious. Midway made a fantastic work by creating a unique experience among other Doom titles, while the gameplay is still the same. Too bad the sales were poor.

Gosh... I just recently discovered how awesome Chocolate Doom is, despite having it for half year on hard disk...

Are these titles aside from Doom left uncensored and uncut on GoG.com?

Specific Things in Doom that Amuse You Greatly

I had once run on Nightmare in Episode 1. At the start of M9, where there's a great chance to cause infight, I saw from a distance when Pinky quickly ran to Shotgun Guy and bit him once, gibbing him instantly. For a secong I thought of it as a kiss hard enough to make Sergeant hearts falling. I laughed really hard.

    Reliably chainsaw demons?

I try to minimalize damage by going backwards. As chainsaw is still sticking to demons, sometimes a little bit distance is enough to avoid bites. EDIT: Nah, I'm too late :) By the way, if you're skillful enough and got Berserk pack, it's better to punch them :) Without this power-up, hit demons only if you're really low on ammo and there's no other monsters around you.

    The Doom Confessional Booth

Me too :) Maybe because not everyone got interested in Custom WADs and they know Doom just from official mapsets (mainly D1 and D64, which are more on exploration focused). About me, I play on ZDoom in 320x240 with capped fps. I just love to play on lower resolutions (on possibly color depth), especially older games in its original settings. Also, I do pistol start on every level.

Post Your Opinions About Doom (Whether Controversial or Not)

@ABRACADABRA Weapons in Wolf3D, Doom, Quake etc. weren't intended to be so realistic, weren't they? They also don't have recoil and reload animations (aside from SSG). You would appreciate these guns more if you would do pistol start on every level :) You don't have BFG on every map, so you have to rely mostly on Plasma Gun, when it goes for cell ammo. As a fun fact, in Brutal Doom assault rifle (pistol's counterpart) and minigun still share the same ammo.
  16. Hello everyone! That's my first post, although I visited Doomworld recently as a guest :) I'm very curious for a long time about how people discover entrances to secret levels, for example how to get to MAP32 in Doom64. Aside from the Internet, how the heck I could know that... Are there hints hidden somewhere in game? Also, while reading some articles about Doom on the Internet, I stumbled upon next spoiler (quite "harmful" for me, as I wanted to discover these secret on my own :)) how to get to MAP32 in Doom II. Did you guys know about it naturally, discovered these levels accidently by yourself, or you were searching for hints on the Internet first? Do you also consider this last one as a bad spoiler? PS: English is not my native language, so I'm aware that my post may be not read-friendly :) PS2: If there are/were similar topics, please redirect me to them. Blame me for that, but I failed to find such threads if any exist.

Question about secret levels [Possible spoilers]

Good to know about hardcoded map slots. Especially I'm not familiar with mapping (yet?:)), this is new for me. If mapset is changed and really desperate, I guess I would search for info, which levels contain secret entrances. IMO finding secret exits gives a nice satisfaction, provided they're well hinted and levels are enough suspicious to contain one. Doing trial-and-error by pushing every wall or shooting them is quite a nonsense :P That's why intrigues me how people would get to MAP32 in Doom64 by intuition. I guess it's only justified by guides in magazines. Correct me if I'm wrong. Save Doom II - it's legit if someone beats every level with all secrets discovered. I found secret exit in E2M5 earlier than normal too. In E3M6 it was quite obvious to execute Rocket Jump. I've had some problems in E1, but I had to find out that floors or doors may also trigger just by passing through specific places. In Doom64, although it was more obvious to get to 'usual' secret exits, it was more pleasant for me to discover them. Maybe because maps are focused more on explorations/puzzles... or because of artifact hunt makes more sense :)
