    Halloween Themed Doom WADS!

In the tradition of Wal-Mart and other such stores, might I interest you in a Christmas themed wad? I know it's not even Halloween yet, and Thanksgiving is a month after that, and then there's a whole other month until Christmas, but it's never too late to start early! Get Massmouthmas today so you're not panicking on Christmas Eve looking for a wad to play!

Name a character that's like Doomguy

If we're gonna go the Half-Life route, then less Gordon Freeman and more Adrian Shepard. Shepard is more like the Doomguy because he's a marine sent in to clean up the mess the scientist's made. Now, if Doom was from the perspective of a UAC employee then Freeman would be the more appropriate comparison. Anyway, Doom wad that puts the player in the shoes of a UAC employee anyone? I'm not doing it, I'm still working on the same damn map I started this summer. On an unrelated note, I feel like Valve dropped the ball not padding out the HL2 universe with sequels to Opposing Force and Blue Shift, both of which would have worked quite nicely into the plot (the 7-day teleport towards the end of the game would have been a perfect opportunity to drop Shepard in to rally the troops that then followed Gordon in "Follow Freeman!")

So, how old are you ?

Also, this. I didn't take care of my teeth so things are pretty bad. I can save them, but it'll be expensive. I've done construction for most of 20 years plus and been a roofer on and off for 15 of that, and my knees are starting to notify me that they're gonna give me hell here real soon if I don't slow down and utilize them more efficiently. EDIT: I just now discovered that the little plus sign is for multi-quotes, but I have no idea how to cancel out a post I'm currently in the middle of, copy quotes or remove them. I'm learning.

    Good luck. I'm 30 and I still don't know.

What Video Game Are You Currently Playing?

I've been grinding quite a bit of Destiny 2. Yes, on paper it's a fundamentally terrible game. In reality I'm enjoying myself, and the raid was quite nice.

Name a character that's like Doomguy

That's what I was gonna say. Doomguy is the Boogeyman of hell. Plus, UD E4 was basically revenge for a dead rabbit. Man, now I remember how hyped I am for JW3.
  7. I asked and I received. I follow it's advice every day; I make love to myself and don't make HL mods.

The story behind your custom avatar

They announced playable Mancubi in Doom 16, and that they could use jump pads, which amused the he'll out of me so I made a crappy gif. Mancubi are my favorite enemy, so it worked.

What Video Game Are You Currently Playing?

Battlefield 1 has been dominating most of my game time these days. I really enjoy it, although it was a pain in the ass getting used to the different meta so I hooked back up with my old clanmates. I'm not very good competitively except in Medic and Support roles, but we only do one or two games a week so most of the times we play together is the equivalent of the after work beer with buddies, which is how I prefer to play games. Taking them seriously is dumb (I used to, and my attitude was terrible.) Otherwise, I'm tinkering with making a map for Doom, play a couple Quake levels, worked on Battlefront and MGSV for the trophies, and Strike Vector EX was free on PS+ this month; I remember Carnevil telling me about it a few years ago and I've been dying to try it.
  10. I've always been amused by how old science fiction writers assumed everyone in the future was still going to be smoking all the time (versus the current trend in the US at least where smoking is on the decline - and while I despise the nanny state practices and anti-smoking propaganda, this is actually a good thing overall.) Granted they also assumed we'd still be using analog computers (is that the right term?) and nuclear power for everything too. On topic: when Xander Cage was pinned down by that chainsmoking sniper in XXX, he was able to use the heat off the cigarette to send a heat seeking missile and take out the sniper, thus allowing him to get away and save the world. So the theory stands: smoking saves the world.

    Anyone still play MP? [PS4]

I sent you a PM with my PSN. Sometimes it's a pain in the ass to find a lobby, but it's still pretty active on certain game types. I'm not as good as I used to be, all the youngins figured out how to play finally, but I do like getting on with a party and having some fun and a few laughs. Looking forward to playing. :)

    WWII Movies for Wolfenstein Fans

Where Eagles Dare was amazing. Your thread inspired me to finally look up that war movie Pink watched in The Wall which is called The Dam Busters and which I had learned only a week ago was the inspiration for the first Death Star battle. These films have always held a special place in my heart though, having been raised by veterans and having a lot of respect for the soldiers and their sacrifices. The fact that the old war films were very much pro-American propaganda is something I really miss in cinema in general; I understand my country isn't perfect, but I love it and the freedoms it represents, and I'd like to see a return to that kind of admiration for it in the media. Random thought: Saving Private Ryan and the napalm scene in Forrest Gump were the reasons I was too afraid/chickenshit to join the military (even after knowing my intelligence would have landed me a non-infantry posistion). It's a decision I regret to this day, and I'm far too old to join now. Still, SPR was absolutely amazing both to my 11 year old self and even today. Scary, scary shit; much respect to all the troops that fought in that horror and kudos to Spielberg for doing such an excellent job.

    What's your worst Rage Quit?

When I purchased my PS3 I eventually bought some COD games because that's what the guys at work were playing. Hate COD all you like (and I do too), MW2 was amazing. So needless to say, I was psyched for MW3. I had a lot of fun with that game, but eventually too much playing tends to burn me out. I was doing one of the spec ops missions, where you have to fight through the plane on a time limit to get to the president. Well, after several repeated attempts I finally got so angry that I stood up and went to kick the wall. Now, you can't tell where studs are just by glancing at the wall so my thinking that I could kick that wall without any repercussions was foolish; I left a nice foot shaped hole in my mother-in-law's basement wall. I felt so stupid and terrible for that. Fun fact one: the hole is still there, I never fixed it and I'm long gone (divorce), and fun fact two: I watch a YouTube video for that particular mission and the guy went slow. He didn't panic because of the timer, and beat it with plenty of time left. So I copied his exact strategy and beat it the first go. And this is why developers put countdown timers in games: creates an artificial sense of panic. It worked. This is really embarrassing for me to admit, but when Doom 2016 came out I was really damn good at it, so I developed a bit of an ego. All the guys I'd been playing with moved onto other things, so I was running solo. Well, more often than not in those earlier days I was having to carry entire teams; sometimes I'd be the only person with a positive K/D ratio. I got so sick of losing that I started getting on my headset after matches, screaming and cursing at the other players and calling them all sorts of names, and then back out of the lobby and join a new one. I'm pretty ashamed of that, it was totally inappropriate and just a terrible way to be. I should have sent some party invites out and been like, "Look, guys, I've been seeing you play and you're doing it kind of wrong. Let me help you." Hindsight is 20/20, but if you reading this were one of the people on PS4 I treated like shit simply because I was an egomaniac, I apologize. Once I slammed my PS4 controller off the ground hard enough it turned itself off. It was otherwise unphased. I have no idea what game made me do that, but I found it interesting. These days, I'm pretty chill (I've lot my temper in a couple of Battlefield 1 clan matches a couple of times, but I immediately called myself out on it.) It's just a game, it's there to help up relieve stress, work our brains and have fun. I hate that I used to take them so damn seriously and that I acted like a complete and total asshole sometimes, but that's the past and I've learned. Also, 1000th post. I was gonna save it to announce the map I'm working on, but it's got some ways to go before it's ready for testing. Been here since 2002 and can honestly say this is the best community I've ever been a part of, both online and in real life. Hell, even the political discourses are civil compared to anywhere else, heh. Looking forward to another one thousand posts, and glad you guys are my friends and fellow Doomers. :)

How much time does it take to finish your project?

At this rate: first map 14 years ago, second map 10 years ago. 4-10 years. That's how long. I have no idea how long my first published map from 14 years ago took to make, but not very long I would suppose. It's my first completed map and it's terrible. BTW @Memfis Thanks for leaving a brief and honest review, I just now saw that. :) My second published map was MAP14 in a community megawad project, and was actually only 85% complete when it was submitted; I hadn't finished the final area and connecting it to the rest of the level. As the project was a Megawad in Two Weeks, that's how long it took to conceive that much from concept to finished, with detailed, functional and populated area. This is what I did instead of homework in high school. If only I'd gotten good at it, then moved on to newer engines, but oh well. Otherwise, I've never published anything else. I'll design encounters, areas, doodle on paper, play with Doom Builder, but I never finish anything. Creative block, not sure how to layout a map to completion in a satisfactory way, no time or discipline, work, whatever. I've had a hankering to finally finish one, so I'd been tinkering with it again lately. I had a general idea of how I wanted combat to flow, and a general idea of how the map was laid out, but referencing this thread by @40oz has been tremendously helpful it giving me a more structured way of putting my ideas into the Doom environment instead of the haphazard, backwards way I was going about it. I started my current map 7 August, so I'll make a note of when I finished and return to this thread, but in two weeks: the first half of the level is about 40 percent built, linedefs cleaned up, sectors & linedefs functional, textures placed but not finalized, combat implemented but not balanced. So, perhaps a month more and I'll have it damn near done, a week or so more to get it ready for play-testing. EDIT: And now I know how to properly insert links into my posts on this gosh darn newfangled system. I like it though.
  15. I agree with you, I thought that was Wolfwood on the left.

    iPhone or Android?

Android; however, I go farther than the operating system in my consideration. I'm actually using a Galaxy Note 4 I bought last year. The battery can be replaced (which is the problem with new Androids and Mac in general: fixed batteries go to shit; my battery will also go to shit, but pop the case off, replace the battery and done) and the upgradable storage are the two biggest reasons. Plus I love the hell out of my built in stylus. I have used the Apple pen on a iPad pro my friend got, and it really is a slick piece of hardware, and that is something I might consider getting cheaper second hand down the line when I have some extra cash, but to me the Note 4 was perfect and they should have improved upon that. (I mean, by market trends technically they did, but making the batteries fixed and the storage a set amount isn't an improvement to me, nor is turning them into combustion devices.)

    DOOM Update 6.66 (Multiplayer Only)

Not anymore, thus the "ex" part. But she gave up on Doom rather quickly. She was never a big fan of FPS in general; she was able to get into Destiny fairly easily (very colorful, and like Halo it's an FPS with training wheels), Titanfall 2 (enemies are highlighted orange, making them stand out, and having the Titan to rely on helped her a lot), but Doom (even though the enemy is always white) was a bit fast paced for her. She won't even talk to me anymore and I'm blocked on everything, which is just as well because now I have zero reason to buy Destiny 2, thus saving me money, time and a massive headache dealing with Bungie's lies (and also hers, but that's neither here nor there.) I do miss having a partner that was also a gaming partner though. Meh, plenty of fish in the sea or something. Just gotta find one with her own PS4 again that isn't a "gamer girl" (the ones you see on PSN's "Players You May Know" with obvious bait names that have 0% on all their trophies, meaning they put the disc in and started the game up, and that's it, yet have a hundred friends on PSN.)

    What are you listening to?

I've got that album in my van's CD player right now. The day I bought it, I was actually looking for a copy of The Land of Rape and Honey, and both of their stores had the case with the wrong disc in them, so I bought Psalm 69 instead. Ministry is just awesome. Loved the score for GTA V, with this being my favorite track. Funny how the title is a fitting metaphor for my life. My cell signal went down for no reason yesterday, so instead of Pandora I listened to my personal music on my phone. This came on and I thought to myself, "If they don't use this in a Wolfenstein: TNC trailer, fail." I know it's too obvious, but c'mon, you know you wanna see that cut now. Whenever I get this fucking band off the ground, if I can ever get out of this slump I'm in, I'm defo covering this song.

'Orange Crush' - A new Wrack map

Oh yeah, it was a blast. :D Unfortunately I was too much of a drugged out mess at the time for my alpha testing privileges to be of any use in feedback, but I was grateful to watch and learn the engine grow over a year and see it change. I really love that game concept and the engine, and if I had more discipline to learn how to work with the deeper design I'd love to mod for it more. Also Mate, I lead a raid group full of people I didn't know (I warned them ahead of time) through their first ever run of the Vault of Glass in Destiny while peaking on some high quality acid. Interestingly enough, I ran it flawlessly without dying while teaching them the mechanics. I absolutely hate that game, it stole so much life and time from me, but Destiny holds a place in my heart for two reasons: That game is just an absolutely gorgeous, beautiful, organic piece of art; you can just flow right through it and melt with the painstaking details of the hand crafted universe, and two, the Vault of Glass. That was the peak of Destiny too IMO.

'Orange Crush' - A new Wrack map

One. Great looking map, and also, it is whipping my ass something proper. Looking forward to beating it someday, I hope. It'll be fun to get back into this game, I'm looking forward to seeing the second half of the map one day. :) Great work. Two, I miss WrackED; that was a lot of fun to work with, and I wish I'd stuck with it. Great engine, moving from Doom Builder to it and into 3D for the first time was pretty smooth, and the scripting is familiar and easy. I don't think Carnevil got as much credit as he deserved. I loved it. Overall, great effort. There was a guy that could speedrun and get Tyderium medals on these; would love to see his expertise, because I'm a rank amateur even on the vanilla maps. :D This guy, decino. I was on a lot of acid when Wrack was in development so his avatar always freaked me out. Can't find his other Wrack videos right off hand:

    DOOM Update 6.66 (Multiplayer Only)

Bungie is pretty active in flat out lying and misdirecting their fanbase. So there's that. Either that or they're incomptent. I think D. EDIT: Sony is pretty bad with their firmware updates. Usually its simply "Software update to improve system stability and performance" or something like that, and even digging online comes up with the same thing. Unless they add or take away features, which is rare, they don't tell you squat.
  24. Johnatone

    What are you listening to?

Just a weird random thing that popped into my head before bed. Not really a big Psychopathic fan these days, I burnt out on that shit as an edgy teenager, but this song always amused me. If you can't hear why, I posted the source. Now I'm curious if Sonic Mayhem or id are credited for the sample.

    DOOM Update 6.66 (Multiplayer Only)

Wow, this game made a liar out of me. Found an active FFA Play lobby (Bloodrush is pretty amazing, I have to admit) AND got a gold medal in Deathmatch, both of which based on last night I would have swore would never happen. Also, they fixed the Motion in the Explosion trophy; prior to this update, I had twenty some odd kills with the Kinetic mine but no trophy; I got five last night and it popped. I was a completionist junkie long before trophies and achievements made it an actual thing, except back in the day I just made Excel spreadsheets with different completion goals. Only difference is now I can showcase it to the zero people that care. :P EDIT: Have encountered a frustrating bug where, after selecting a demon it will spawn you with the Revenant by default. In one match I was going for my last few Cacodemon kills for the trophy so this was rather annoying, but the second time I picked it up (without reselecting my demon) it spawned the Caco. So I dunno; the next match I selected a Spectre and it worked fine. I've only encountered this glitch twice.
