    Abandon - Beta is here!

    Abandon is a Boom-compatible wad composed of large, difficult slaughter maps. Maps by: Bemused Benjogami Scotty with custom menu graphics by Insane_Gazebo, and status bar by galileo31dos01. Thanks to Ribbiks for technical and nodebuilding expertise, and to our many playtesters over these few years. Full credits will be compiled when we have an RC. Mapping started in 2016, and the beta is here! See link below. Tested mostly in glboom+ and prboom+. Use glboom+ if you care about higher framerates, but prboom+ doesn't often go below 35fps on my modest gaming laptop. Even GZDoom only seems to have a few areas of choppiness, depending on your settings (you probably don't want dynamic lights on, for example). There are a couple of features that aren't finished yet: difficulty settings and coop compatibility (there are definitely coop softlocks atm). And of course there will be balance changes and bug fixes according to feedback. Otherwise, the maps should be complete and polished UV experiences. Demos will most likely be desync'd at some point, though.   2. Down the Drain is 32 vanilla maps for Doom 2 and is my take on a Hell on Earth replacement with no added assets except midis that I like and bad menu gfx. Difficulty settings, coop, and deathmatch are implemented. The included .deh contains story and automap names, only necessary for ports without embedded DEHACKED support (Chocolate Doom, doom2.exe, etc).     That fight is meant to be a bit of a trap, either challenging extra content for completionists, or a regrettable find for unsuspecting explorers. But I think I will make it so the lift doesn't damage, or something like that, cause it is pretty rough that you can be stuck down there after "winning" the fight. Sorry about that. :D I'm also a bit surprised that these are called slaughtermaps! But there are certainly a few (maybe several?): 26 and 29 come to mind. There will be some sprite flickering on a few maps, but I tried to keep it pretty chill. Glad you're enjoying. :) D'oh. That's an area I've struggled with, reworked that corner a couple times. I thought I fixed it but didn't try it with the lift down! Good catch.

    I actually found that midi in a big zip of dance midis and had to do some searching to find out who they were and listen to their music proper, and I really dig it. Always fun to discover new music via midis. :D Also, glad you're enjoying. :D

    MAP09 and MAP21 definitely bugs, thanks. MAP10 issue: the yellow key gets closed up if you walk through the slime lift, but you should be able to lower the lift and shoot the switch behind it again to re-open it. I think I made it that way because I thought people would open the yellow key while shooting the imps, not knowing what they did, so I made it close again so they'd have to figure it out. :P MAP01 pit definitely a bug. I haven't yet tested in DOSBox, I'll be sure to look into that Z_CheckHeap error, hopefully not too troublesome to fix. Thanks for the reports!

    Co-op fixes are coming soon, hopefully. Most of the maps are already fixed up (difficulty settings added as well), just waiting on the last few maps. The inescapable pits will probably all stay, though, sorry. :D

    dsda-doom source port [v0.21.3]

    Yo, finally checking this out and think I ran into a bug: The infinite ammo dehacked from nostil.wad is causing weapons to cycle when they're fired, as if they have no ammo. I tested in complevel 9, and the issue isn't occurring in prboom-plus- I'm looking forward to using the new re-record stuff :D

  14. The Egg of Human Endeavors is a single map made in February 2018 for Vargskelethor's Doom Mapping Contest 2: Hellectric Boogaloo. It's complevel 9 and tested thoroughly by me in PrBoom+ and GZDoom (but mostly in PrBoom+).     Hmm, it's working for me at the moment. Thanks for the grats everyone! Several days ago, I wrote up some of my Abandon story and a reaction to the award, but I spent too much time and effort on it and became embarrassed. Maybe later, lol. Been pecking away at the beta2 RC1 changelist here and there. I'm a little past half done with the work that my maps need, and I've seen some evidence of work by the others as well. Maybe this year? :D

    Thanks for the amazing writeup of Abandon, @Demon of the Well! It was a treat and honor to read. I’ve always loved your descriptions of Doom and have even held as a design goal, “make something worthy of a DotW writeup,” but still, I wasn’t prepared. It captures the vibe of what we were going for so well that I can’t help but feel it’s too generous. :D

Oh yeah, something I forgot to say about this part: making the switch stand out more would help, but also the cover that I used, and any other place you can take cover from the viles, should be removed or blocked off somehow. The switch will stand out a lot more if it's the only way to survive. :) But still, I had fun figuring out how to do it without the switch, and sometimes it's nice to have more than one solution to a problem!

I've seen some other cases of HoMs that occur in software but not gl. But I don't have much to say that I didn't say during the playthrough :D I had a good time.

    @Amph @Andromeda Vanilla is used 2 different ways ;) Abandon is not vanilla, because it doesn't run on doom2.exe and needs an advanced sourceport that implements Boom features. But Abandon is vanilla, because the gameplay is unmodded: there are no changes to monsters/weapons with Dehacked.
