    Warnings on Doomworld. (now suspensions)

The ZDoom forums are notorious for having an out-of-mind moderation where the craziest mods appear out of nowhere -- people who have been inactive even for years -- to give you a permaban for stating your opinion on, e.g., a shitty movie. Also, mods engaging in political discussion -- which is generally forbidden as per the ZDF rules -- seemingly only to get others striked or banned for doing the same. They also block your IP address when they permaban you, so if someone interested in Doom happens to be with the same ISP as you are, get the permabanned IP address assigned, and then get on the ZDF page, they will invariably see the permaban message that only you are supposed to see. Very clever. Not. In short: Of all the gaming communities I've been on since 1998, when I started using the Web, ZDF has been by far the one with the worst moderation. Doomworld, OTOH, at least seems to have some rationale behind its acting and some kind of proper, points-based system. That's okay, but my general experience is that people with strong minds and strong opinions will get banned sooner or later if too many others get intellectually, or emotionally, overwhelmed by them, even without having committed any kind of rule-breaking.

Oh yeah, indeed. I confused mklink for junction. My bad. No, I have installed several updates since then, though never fully wiped the system.

Are you sure about that? It may be shipped with Windows Server, but isn't shipped with Windows 10. Or wasn't, at least not with the Win 10 Pro I've got in 2016 and have been using since.
  4. Oh, BTW, I'm getting requests for an upload of my compilation. Are guys okay with that? No modifications except the removed pistol starts.

Yeah, but for some, you need the Powershell. And mklink is an additional download. While the NTFS does support symlinks (and I use them extensively), the OS, in its out-of-the-box state, doesn't let you create them. Generally, there's a lot wrong with Windows which could be a powerful OS, but still isn't, due to MS's negligence, lack of easily accessible documentation, constant changes in the GUI, so you have an ever harder time finding all the control options with every new update, and so on.

    Duke Nukem 3D or Quake?

There ware some good mission packs and total conversions. Try the Malice: 23rd Century TC. You can download it from My Abandonware.

Console stuff is important in Linux, so there I use the Midnight Commander extensively. But Windows is different, there's really not that much the Command Prompt could be of good use for. Not even in DOSbox I use a commander as I always have TC running anyway.
  8. Tenements is one of my favorite Doom 2 maps overall and one of the very few 'city' maps I like. No wonder since it was made by Romero. Map 11 was also made by Romero, and I also like it much more than 9, 10, or 12. Also, I use the Romero-made map 29 in UV with fly mode for vanilla benchmarking purposes. Graphics and performance settings that work well with map 29 should work well with any vanilla map in GZDoom.

Zombiemice! But I think they don't make 'em like this anymore, though I might be wrong. I think I tried it out once, but it wasn't the time for DOS anymore. I've instead bought a copy of Total Commander years ago to use with Windows. It basically has all the features DN used to have. You can even set different file name colors based on their type/extension.
  10. I have compiled all your most recent map updates into the 'beta 2' strains, removed the item and health resets ("pistol starts"), and now play them continuously. I'm through with the first six maps now, and these were already quality. The progression in size and difficulty so far has also been good.

I have two Logitech MouseMan Dual Optical mice. They are both 19 years old and still work perfectly.

Looks familiar. I used Dos Navigator for a number of years back then. I had it in a 132x50 text mode running via some driver. It was seriously good stuff, even supported long file names when run from the Windows Command Prompt.

    Duke Nukem 3D or Quake?

Quake was more fun in coop play somehow while Duke was more fun otherwise.

    Ultimate Doom Builder

Well, no, it's a needed texture. Removing it will create a HOM. The check procedure is wrong.

Will the bug ever be fixed where the map analysis tool reports allegedly unused lower or upper textures for some doors and platforms although those textures are absolutely needed? It seems to only affect a few types of linedef actions, so is probably just an oversight. But it's an old issue, I remember having it reported several years ago for Doom Builder 2.
  16. I mean, the difficulty of all of E4 is just ridiculous even if that one map (E4M9) may be of an overall decent design. One swallow doesn't make a summer, anyway.

    Where's the Wolfenstein love?

It has square pixels, though, so it look worst than the original DOS version.
  18. My opinion is this: Any map from Doom 2, no matter how bad, is still better than any map from E4.
  19. You guys are completely missing out on the security aspects of CPU architecture. With the discovery of Meltdown and Spectre it had become pretty evident that AMD's 64-bit architecture was generally more secure that Intel's. And while Ryzen had fixed the gaming performance and power consumption issues that had riddled AMD for the prior 20 years or so, any 64-bit AMD CPU has been more secure than a comparable Intel up to this day because of its different architecture.

I use reverse turn keys since you don't really need normal turn keys anyway if you play with a mouse. The effect of mouse turning combined with reverse turn keys is similar to using a mouse and dedicated strafe keys.

I set the 70 Hz rate using the Custom Resolution Utility. My external monitor supports up to 75 Hz. BTW, Speccy reports the refresh rate of the first screen wrongly. It's 60 Hz as the laptop's integrated display cannot be set higher than that (probably 62 Hz is the maximum), but for some reason the second (external) screen's 70 Hz are applied to both displays by the app in its overview.

DDR stands for double data rate... So that makes sense. I have the same speed RAM, and it also shows something like 1065 MHz.

    Where's the Wolfenstein love?

If you hid the secrets map in a secret area, you would eventually get both. Plus, looking for such areas would then make even more sense. But I guess that's all just a matter of taste.

    Where's the Wolfenstein love?

I tend to say that Wolfy was 2.25D, Doom was 2.5D, and DN3D was 2.75D... of sorts.

I have a 2015 gaming laptop from MSI (with a Core i7-6700HQ and a GTX 970M, the latter O/C'ed by 20%) with a 27" monitor and a keyboard and mouse connected to it. The monitor supports any frequency from 50 to 75 Hz, so I have set it to 70 to get a double-the-ticrate frequency which works well with the game's interpolation. For some older ZDoom variants, like Zandronum, I've also specified a 71.43 Hz frequency setting (double the ZDoom ticrate) which I rarely use, however.
