    So, Bethesda has re-released the classic games. Has anyone played them yet? What's the deal with that 60 fps update? I've seen a trailer where the weapon and monster animations are just the basic vanilla animations and not smooth at all.

    That's my whole point. Why release something that gets crashed by a custom map? They could, and should, have reworked the code a bit more. It's ridiculous. Only one thing that's good is that horizontal weapon selection menu. That was a nifty idea. Saw it on an LP. We should get that for (G)ZDoom.

    Fantastic map, took me two hours to finish (secret exit). I really appreciate the excellent performance despite its massive size.

    Yeah, I see. It's mostly different music packs and the Doom Remake HD textures. At least, he used the latest GZDoom, not some prehistoric one. It's not too bad if you fix his PK3-renamed-WAD file.

    It's not bad, but the jump from HMP to UV is pretty strong with regards to item placing, and a bit pointless, too. So, the chainsaw and berserk pack only appear on hard skill because spectres. But more, and more varied, monsters means infighting can be accomplished more easily, leaving you without the need for additional weapons and power-ups. Also, the shootable switch should be positioned in a way it would be shootable without mouselook. Otherwise, you should not state it to be vanilla compatible.

    Storage conditions were always good. Room temperature, not too humid. But yes, 80s and early 90s disks were a lot better than the ones produced later. Similar thing with vinyls from the late 80s and early 90s. Sound quality was deliberately worsened by some labels to push CD sales. Today's vinyl have very good quality even though digital audio today is also a lot better than what we had in the 80s.

    Are those floppies even readable after all these years? I remember floppies becoming unreadable often after just a few months. Even some CD-Rs would suffer from that problem after a few years.

  20. The BlooM crossover is going to be released very soon. It will contain more than 30 monsters, many of which will be crossovers between Doom and Blood monsters. They have a Facebook page where they showcase their newest stuff, and you can already play the demo.

    I've just found out, while working on a new map, that there is a big difference between zero-height sectors and actual empty spaces with regards to visplanes, and that even the actual floor and ceiling height values of those zero-height sectors seem to matter. So, if you have two rooms each full of visplanes, but not enough to exceed the visplane limit respectively, you can still get a visplane overflow if - between those two rooms, there is a zero-height sector instead of an empty space AND the two rooms (and the zero-height sector) make for a combined number of visplanes of more than 128 (or whatever your port has for its limit); - the height values of the floor and ceiling of the zero-height sector, while being both the same, are non-zero. In other words, this means that Doom renders everything, visible and invisible, that is part of a sector, as a visplane, without regards to the sector's height and visibility, while not rendering stuff that is behind an empty space. Interestingly, even the Visplane Explorer does show that difference.

    Did anyone actually use UDMF for their map? I haven't managed to test all of them yet.

    Yeah, but if you just put some maps together in a completely random fashion, it won't be any good. A continuous playthrough might even become impossible because of different source port features present in some of the maps. They all seem to run in GZDoom, but I think they should be playable with other popular ports as well. So, a lot of streamlining would be necessary to allow any map to be played in PrBoom+ and some other non-ZDoom ports. Yeah, unplayable outside of GZDoom--even though no actual GZDoom features were used and the map could be easily made vanilla-compatible, the way I have demonstrated with my "8 rockets" edit.

    Yeah, but the maps will need some balancing, because some are super easy while others, containing hordes of tough monsters, are almost unplayable. Also, almost all maps lack difficulty settings. These should be added as well.
