How do you fell about Doom RNG?

I'm one of those who thinks the RNG is a good thing but that it's more aggressive than I would like, and I've experimented with similar ideas to the Tighter RNG mod. It's fairly easy to do in Decorate or ZScript, if time consuming.

Why Does It Feel Good To Kill In Video Games?

Humans have definitely enjoyed hunting down and killing prey over the years - maybe not other humans for the most part, but certainly animals and plants. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors often needed to do this to obtain food, and sometimes incorporated enjoyment as part of the process. Nowadays, as we no longer need to hunt and kill animals in order to get food, hunting and killing for pleasure is widely frowned upon, as we saw with the support for the UK hunting ban. But many of the same pleasures can be sought harmlessly from hunting and killing bad guys in video games. Instead of getting food, we get increased end of level stats, we get the sense of achievement of clearing out an area. You could argue that some video games involve killing virtual humans, but it's still not the same as killing live human beings.

k8vavoom: no good thing ever dies!

I'm not sure if the glitch is 100% back or not, but I think it's as if transparency below a certain amount is rendered correctly, and then transparency above that amount is rendered at 100%. Two example screenies: It's not an artefact of trilinear filtering because when I have filtering set to the classic pixellated look I still get this effect.

k8vavoom: no good thing ever dies!

I can confirm that the flak cannon's projectiles now work as they should, so thanks for that! Just a quick report though, it seems that the old transparent scrolling sky glitch is back in this version.

Why Does It Feel Good To Kill In Video Games?

My theory is that shooting and killing in video games is an effective way to fulfil my primitive hunting instincts (a biological legacy of the old days when humans regularly went out hunting), while at the same time knowing that no matter how many demons I kill, I won't be hurting anyone in real life.

    New Years Doom Resolutions

Make some substantial progress with actually mapping rather than dithering and suffering from perfectionism and procrastination. I started to get on track towards the end of 2021, but being on my ageing laptop over Christmas have been unable to do much over the past week.

what are you working on? I wanna see your wads.

Still early days, but getting in the swing of actually mapping again after a while of deciding on what resources to go ahead with and a foray into Quake mapping. Here's three WIP screenies of a space station using Ben "Makkon" Hale's Quake textures and a modification of BDLite, in k8Vavoom:

What's a map you never get tired of playing?

Maps 01, 26 and 29 from Eviternity have to be up there amongst my most played maps of all time. There's quite a few from the first Doom: E1M1, E1M2, E1M3, E2M2, E2M4, E2M8, E3M6 in particular.

Worst way to die in any doom game

Xaser's rocket death was exactly the kind of thing I thought of when I saw the title of the thread.

    You Should be Using DoomMake

This could be particularly useful for my project as I'm currently working with Ben "Makkon" Hale's Quake textures, which, at 512x512, take up a lot of space, even when converted to 8-bit PNGs. I could get away with bundling OTEX with my WAD/PK3 if it contained several levels, but bundling the Makkon textures would result in a rather off-putting file size, and naturally filtering out unused textures from those will be tedious and time consuming. I think there's a good chance of me making use of this particularly once it gets PK3 support.

    Doom Pictures Thread 2021

Looks like K8Vavoom's 3D polyobjects at work again! I also think I recognise some of the knave Quake textures.

    GOG Or Steam

In many cases I'd say GOG because no DRM, but in the case of Doom I went with Steam because I run Doom with source ports anyway (thus no DRM regardless of where I get it from) and I can connect the source ports to Steam and have Steam log my play time. It really depends on what your preferences are and what you think of Steam as a whole (although I have some reservations about it, my experiences with Steam have so far been predominantly positive).

    Sunder - Map20 Appears, finally.

I recognise quite a few of Ben "Makkon" Hale's textures in there, as well as some modified versions of them - they translate well to what I think of as the "epic Insane_Gazebo style". Looks to me like Map20 is a further evolution of the style/aesthetic of Maps 18 and 19.

How fast did you finish E1M1?

My fastest is 13 seconds. Maybe I could reduce it to 12 or even 11 if I tried for long enough.

Descent Doom (Descent 2 in GZDoom)

I decided to try playing through E1M3 in the Descent spaceship and take advantage of the six degrees of freedom, but amusingly I still didn't make the par time...
  16. This is my first public release in 2 years but I hope to start releasing more frequently from now on. I'm still into playing about with Doom/Heretic/Hexen themes for the most part, but I've moved towards an approach of doing my own thing with them (a bit like the approach that Vaughan Williams used with familiar pieces of music when he was around my age, most famously in Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis) rather than doing covers. I expect to sporadically release some original compositions as well. Anyway, here's my latest effort which is based around the Doom victory theme. I have a few earlier releases on Soundcloud as well, my old remix of "Sign of Evil" has proved the most popular of those.

    Most/Least used Monsters?

I was immediately reminded of a few humiliating deaths in Map05 of Eviternity where I spent a while taking down the more powerful monsters only to be killed by sniping Zombiemen. I reckon imps are the most used overall, both in the original IWADs and in custom maps. I especially felt this way when playing Doom 3, but I think it's true to a lesser extent in Doom 1 and 2 also.

What is your most used editor?

On my main computer, Ultimate Doom Builder for mapping, Slade 3 for managing pk3/WAD structure. On my old laptop I use GZDoom Builder-Bugfix because its OpenGL version is too old to support UDB.
  19. I get strong nostalgic vibes from playing this. I think the best way of describing it is that these feel like exactly the kind of maps that I had wanted to create in the late 90s, but I never mastered any of the level editors well enough to be able to pull it off. I had a few goes with WadEd, but it kept crashing too much.

    Amazing texture pack - Makkon

Not sure how useful this will be to others as it stands, but with the aid of ImageMagick I've created a pk3 file with all of the trim sheets broken down into smaller chunks (in some cases I separated out individual trims, in other cases I had multiple trims in one). I haven't bothered with converting them to the Doom palette or renaming them into Doom WAD conventions, so to get them all to display it's necessary to enable "Long texture names" in the editor (not sure if all editors have that option, but Ultimate Doom Builder definitely does and it definitely works). I've done this with all Makkon packs from 0 to 3. As far as I'm aware makkon4 has no trim sheets. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cJBMcELVaOmCDmiQt_YiRiXMhp9M7Gyp/view?usp=sharing Here's a screenshot:

    save spamming while playing

My save frequency varies. I sometimes "save scum" when I keep dying at a particular point, so that I don't have to keep replaying significant chunks of it over and over, but apart from that I tend to just save from time to time, usually when I have completed a significant battle or moved to a new area of the map, probably around the same frequency as Doom Eternal's checkpoints. I've never been one for trying to beat a map in one go, unless it is particularly short (I don't use saves on Doom's E1M1 or Doom 2's MAP01).

Why are the zdoom Brazilian doom modders make the best mods?

I enjoyed the first NeoDoom even though it has its issues (e.g. a rather large mess of custom resources, overpowered vixens and a scattering of X-rated stuff) - it was one of the first megawads that I played through, and I enjoyed most of the maps, the atmosphere, and the custom soundtrack. I couldn't get into Final NeoDoom though - it comes across as technically superior to the original in some ways, but I don't like the gameplay or the music as much. I didn't know that Sgt Mark IV is also Brazilian, but fittingly, I think Extermination Day feels in many ways like a spiritual successor to the first NeoDoom that has a lot of the same charm and less of the rough edges. Like a number of others, I went through a phase where I played most things with Brutal Doom and then the novelty wore off, but I'm currently working with DavidN's BDLite quite a bit, and without Brutal Doom there would be no BDLite.

    YouTube is becoming a pain

Reminds me of when I uploaded "Doom 1/2 tunes transposed between major and minor" and a section of E1M2 got auto-flagged as infringing someone's melody, and when I checked, the chord progression was quite similar but the melody was completely different, so the bot had clearly seen a false positive. There was no option to flag it as a false claim, and when I disputed it, all of my YouTube videos disappeared from Google searches. Then, when I deleted the video, my videos reappeared on Google searches. It seemed a bit much to be coincidence, that. I haven't had much difficulty with uploads to YouTube taking a while, my other main annoyance is that they've been getting more aggressive with the ads in the hope of getting users to use the paid version.

Good WAD's using the jump feature ?

The Alfonzone is a good example.
