  1. Hehe.

Actually, Its the fists and the chainsaw that very much define Doom's character for me. Although every game tryed to out do it later, and now we have bandsaws and baseball bats and electrified spiked gauntlets left right and centre, Doom was the first game that I played in which the developers casually went "yeah, we'll have a chainsaw as a standby weapon, and if that aint good enough, here you can turn people inside out with your fingers."

As such, it really doesn't matter to me the specifics in how it works under the hood (although I'd prefer it to not be buggy) - it is literally the style element. Pathologically violent as it may be, I just love the humour element it puts into the game, like watching an over the top horror movie. There are many cases like that where I really couldn't care how its tweaked or changed, because as long as I can do the same stuff, who cares? It's just patching up a favourite old jumper that I'll be damned if I throw it away.

  2. I thought all this stuff was optionable anyway. If you could give all the billions of compat options a rating between 1 and 3 of how much they mess up Doom's original gameplay, boil the relevant ones together into the same mix, then list them in order of severity, then you have a very nice and simple compatibility menu. Especially with a button that says "Doom 2 Clone mode!". You don't even really need to differentiate between all the different options, you just need to know if you are playing the doom 2 version, or the 'fixed version'.

    /me touches his chainsaw

edit: ^ By the way, I know you didnt mean me specifically, and my post was meant to come off as 'reactionary looking'. Its all part of the subplots... I think...

, but you might on the other hand say

No I would not. I would not even dream of it. If I run into someone at 90 mph dead on with a revved up chainsaw, I expect them to explode 100% of the time, no matter what. I dont even care if that is realistic, that is what I expect the game to do. Because it happens to make me feel good on a very deep and subconcious level, in the same way you might enjoy a rigorous back massage or a whole bowl of trifle at once using a tablespoon. You just cannot go wrong, and if you disagree, you are wrong, and need to be introduced to a chainsaw.

    Er...

But yeah, that is the only clear cut opinion I would argue about. Of course the same goes for the fist, which I happily use both powered and non powered for a laugh.

ZDoom's ACS interpreter is completely different from Hexen's and doesn't share a single line of code.

Heh, that makes two! Why do people want to paint a bad picture just because Odamex starts again. You could not have expected in Zdoom 1.22 that one day you would be able to make new monsters with simple text files, or that GZdoom would have let you add sloped 3d constructs and pepper the place with models. And yet just because it can do those things, and despite it being a very nice overall package, you can't say that it is the best version of these things. Even Zdoom itself has bigger plans than what it already does.

In an attempt to bring this topic back to Odamex...

One thing I was really disappointed by was what they decided to base it off. CSDoom is based off version 1.x or something of Zdoom. It's a completely new port, in Alpha.... why not start off with the latest version?

By using the old CSDoom source, I've been told it was immensely easier to convert the source to a GPL license again. That alone should make you happy, because it means anything based on odamex can no longer really take a similar step backwards. There would be no point....

Neither is the future of a port crippled just because it doesn't have the latest zdoom mapping and custom monster/weapon/thematic fridge door bezel support. There are no less than 4 implemented alternatives to the DECORATE+ACS combination, and since to my knowledge they are all GPL, there is nothing stopping Odamex itself from adopting any one of them at one point. In fact Eternity and GZDoom prove there is nothing stopping it from adopting 2 or 5 or making 6 new custom languages. Even further than that, in a recent short conversation with Quasar I was kind of shocked to hear he had written his own version of the ACS interpreter for Eternity, just to avoid the Raven license.

So take out a hanky and blow your nose, and look at the big picture. And also bear in mind being that not being one of the programmers of any of these ports, none of these decisions belong to you. If one was helping, one would have every right to assert ones opinion.

Hah, what a bunch of pricks. Suddenly ZDaemon is nothing special and now they scramble.

I had nothing against ZDaemon before, but this thread changed my mind. Nice strategy.

  7. Which is why I mentioned exactly what it was. I dont actually see any problem using such a thing myself..

But, if you actually want a custom font, it is about 10 minutes work if you want to pick out a nice readable, gpl true type font. (I say that, but I have no idea how to replicate what I did with The Gimp, I used Corel with clipped layers to do the other one...)

  8. Well, I just used doom.ttf and gradually texture-ised it. There's even a seperate set specifically for low-resolution clarity.

Come to think of it, there's nothing really stopping you from creating an Odamex themed game font is there?

  9. There is that nice fact that, once you've got the lot, you dont have the hassle of downloading stuff from it to have a look. I dont have alot of patience for crappy maps, but if they are already sitting on my hard drive, they havent caused me any effort to look at them.

  10. Four of us decided it would be a good idea to take turns shooting each other with my modded bb gun. I now have lots of targets drawn on me, none of which have an impact mark anywhere near them...bloody useless. Although there is a science to working out exactly where its going to hurt the most. One guy got shot in the sphincter. WIN FOR SCIENCE!
